She left school with an impressive list of O levels. But she didn鈥檛 go to university as her father thought she'd get married and a degree would be wasted. Fifty years on, aged 66, Myra Fonceca will become the oldest person to get a history degree from Lucy Cavendish College, Cambridge.

American-born Dayle Kaltenborn聽started her working life as an art teacher. On moving to the UK, she worked as a volunteer for more than 20 years, before qualifying as a social worker. Now in her early 60s, she is not planning to put her feet up: last autumn she began an Access course at South Downs College in Havant, Hampshire.

Women turn out in force to explore their education options

An event for women interested in returning to education, held at Lucy Cavendish College on Thursday, attracted more than 40 people from Cambridge and surrounding area. Encouraged by the 鈥渃hildren welcome鈥 aspect of the session, at least six women brought their children with them.
