Funded programmes to help scholars and students affected by the war on Ukraine

In October, the 探花直播 hopes to welcome upwards of 20 students affected by the war on Ukraine. They will be funded by a range of scholarships including 探花直播Rowan Williams Cambridge Studentship, which is a programme established by the Cambridge Trust to support undergraduate and postgraduate students applying to study at Cambridge from a conflict zone.

探花直播Rowan Williams Scholarships will be fully-funded covering tuition fees and maintenance and will also assist with students鈥� upfront expenses such as travel, visa costs and the immigration health surcharge. 探花直播Cambridge Trust is working with other funders to maximise the number of offers we can make. All recipients of these funds must have a conditional offer from the 探花直播 to be considered for funding.

探花直播School of Clinical Medicine has made a twinning agreement with Kharkiv National Medical 探花直播 to accept medical students on six week clinical placements in Cambridge. Students will be placed at either Cambridge 探花直播 Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust or Cambridgeshire and Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust. Each student will be hosted by a member of the 探花直播 or one of the hospitals, who have volunteered to provide accommodation during their visit. Ten students will take part initially, with further cohorts expected to follow. 探花直播first students are expected to arrive within the next one to two months, subject to the government granting visiting visas.

探花直播Collegiate 探花直播 has so far submitted two applications to the British Academy and Council for At-Risk Academics (Cara) Researchers at Risk Fellowship Scheme. If successful, the fellowships will bring two scholars and their dependents to Cambridge for up to two years. These applications were generously supported by Darwin College and Trinity College.

探花直播探花直播 is also聽in conversations with Ukrainian institutions to establish non-residential scholarships for up to fifteen Ukrainian scholars who have been displaced by the war and are living in Ukraine or neighbouring countries. 探花直播scholarships will provide a stipend, formal links to Cambridge academics and remote access to resources that will enable them to continue academic study.

Some 21 students currently studying in Cambridge have been identified as having been directly affected by the war. They are being supported through the 探花直播鈥檚 Ukrainian Conflict Student Hardship Fund.

In response to conversations with Ukrainian university representatives, the 探花直播 Library and Cambridge 探花直播 Press and Assessment are identifying specific ways in which they can assist in partnership with their national professional bodies. Cambridge 探花直播 Press and Assessment has made the majority of its academic journal content free to institutions registered in Ukraine.

Additional programmes are in development, and the 探花直播 remains ready to sponsor and host displaced doctoral students and academic staff as soon as the government visa scheme enables the 探花直播 to act as a visa sponsor.聽Thank you to those 探花直播 institutions that have come forward with offers of support.

Statement on the National Student Survey 2022:

Following discussions between the Senior Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Education) and sabbatical officers from Cambridge SU, we are announcing actions to be taken by the 探花直播 to improve student consultation and feedback, and alleviate concerns about the National Student Survey. 聽

In recognition of Cambridge SU鈥檚 boycott of the NSS, three commitments have been made;

1. 探花直播探花直播 will publicly oppose any attempts by the Government or the Office for Students to link undergraduate home student tuition fees to the Teaching Excellence Framework, which is informed by NSS results. This statement, recently affirmed by the General Board鈥檚 Education Committee, will be included in the 探花直播鈥檚 response to the Office for Students鈥� consultation on the Teaching Excellence Framework.

2. 探花直播探花直播 and Cambridge SU will co-author and implement a student consultation framework to guarantee productive student participation in decision-making in Faculties, Departments, Schools and the wider 探花直播.

3. Any report from the Reading Week Working Group recommending the introduction of a mid-term break will be considered by the General Board and the 探花直播 Council by the end of this academic year, following the demonstration of strong support for a mid-term break in the SU referendum.

As a result of these commitments, Cambridge SU has agreed to suspend its boycott of the National Student Survey for 2022.聽

What we learn from the survey can be used to make changes that will make a real difference to future students鈥he survey really does help prospective students make informed decisions on where and what to study.鈥�

One of the biggest limitations of the survey is that it fails to provide nuanced and contextualised information about studying at Cambridge, so I'm especially excited to develop a Student Consultation Framework with the 探花直播, which we hope will give students more opportunity to voice their opinions throughout their time here. We're glad that the 探花直播 agrees with Cambridge SU that the NSS, which informs the Teaching Excellence Framework, should not, and cannot, be used by the Government to change university tuition fees."

New report on聽LGBTQ+ experiences at the 探花直播 is now published. While many feel Cambridge offers a 鈥渟afe and empowering鈥� community, the report highlights the 鈥渆motional聽labour鈥� of being聽LGBTQ+ at a leading academic institution.聽

探花直播 pledges support to students estranged from their families

A pledge letter to the charity, Stand Alone, shows a commitment to improving the student experience for those who study without family support.

Recent research聽reveals that 86% of students rely on parental and familial support during their time at 探花直播. However, around 9,000 UK students have bo contact or relationship with their families, leaving them financially, materially and emotionally vulnerable during their studies. Accounts of student life show that estranged students often become homeless over summer and have to stay in student accommodation alone over the Christmas holiday period. These students may be up to three times more likely to drop out of 探花直播.聽

Estranged students are commonly LGBT+ students who were rejected by their families after coming out, children of immigrant families who reject practices such as forced marriage or FGM, or children who are distanced after divorce and remarriage. There are also a proportion of estranged students who've been disowned for pursuing education against the wishes of their family or extended family network.

探花直播探花直播 has joined others, including the 探花直播 of Oxford, in pledging to create additional institutional support for those students who may be struggling because their families aren't behind them.

It commits to giving estranged students a non-repayable enhanced bursary to assist with financial struggles, and will ensure estranged young people are housed over the holiday periods. Further changes will follow after a full audit of their provision.
