"We didn't expect to find such a beautiful, thriving ecosystem. Based on the size of the animals, the communities we observed have been there for decades, maybe even hundreds of years.鈥</p> <p>Using Schmidt Ocean Institute鈥檚 remotely operated vehicle, ROV <em>SuBastian</em>, the team observed the deep seafloor for eight days and found flourishing ecosystems at depths as great as 1300 meters.</p> <p>Their observations include large corals and sponges supporting an <a href="https://youtu.be/4uUo0dWp14A?feature=shared">array of animal life</a>, including icefish, giant sea spiders, and octopus. 探花直播discovery offers new insights into how ecosystems function beneath floating sections of the Antarctic ice sheet.</p> <p>Little is known about what lies beneath Antarctica鈥檚 floating ice shelves. In 2021, British Antarctic Survey researchers first reported signs of bottom-dwelling life beneath the Filchner-Ronne ice shelf in the Southern Weddell Sea. 探花直播current expedition was the first to use an ROV to explore this remote environment.</p> <p> 探花直播team was surprised by the significant biomass and biodiversity of the ecosystems and suspect they have discovered several new species.</p> <p>Deep-sea ecosystems typically rely on nutrients from the surface slowly raining down to the seafloor. For聽centuries, the ecosystems under the ice shelf have been covered by ice almost 150 metres thick, completely cutting them off from surface nutrients. " 探花直播fact that we found long-living species suggests that the lateral transport, which mostly consists of glacial meltwater from the ice shelf, could be the source of the nutrients to sustain the life we found," said team member Dr Laura Cimoli, from Cambridge鈥檚 Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics.</p> <p> 探花直播newly exposed Antarctic seafloor also allowed the team, with scientists from Portugal, the United Kingdom, Chile, Germany, Norway, New Zealand, and the United States, to gather critical data on the past behaviour of the larger Antarctic ice sheet. 探花直播ice sheet has been shrinking and losing mass over the last few decades due to climate change.</p> <p>鈥 探花直播ice loss from the Antarctic Ice Sheet is a major contributor to sea level rise worldwide,鈥 said expedition co-chief scientist Sasha Montelli of 探花直播 College London (UCL). 鈥淥ur work is critical for providing longer-term context of these recent changes, improving our ability to make projections of future change 鈥 projections that can inform actionable policies. We will undoubtedly make new discoveries as we continue to analyse this data.鈥</p> <p>鈥淲e were thrilled by the opportunity to explore the newly exposed seafloor,鈥 said team member Dr Svetlana Radionovskaya from Cambridge鈥檚 Department of Earth Sciences. 鈥 探花直播research will provide key insights into ice sheet dynamics, oceanography and sub-ice shelf ecosystems. "Antarctica and the Southern Ocean are a nexus point for ocean circulation, so changes that happen around Antarctica can affect global ocean circulation and global climate," said Cimoli.</p> <p> 探花直播researchers are also investigating how the iceberg calving event has contributed to mix the upper ocean, not just in the recently exposed area, but also further downstream as the iceberg floats away. As the giant iceberg drifts, it can generate turbulence that mixes water properties and could potentially mix the deep nutrient-rich water with the surface waters, fuelling biological productivity.聽</p> <p> 探花直播expedition was part of <a href="https://challenger150.world/">Challenger 150</a>, a global cooperative focused on deep-sea biological research and endorsed by the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO (IOC/UNESCO) as an Ocean Decade Action.</p> <p>鈥 探花直播science team was originally in this remote region to study the seafloor and ecosystem at the interface between ice and sea,鈥 said Schmidt Ocean Institute Executive Director, Dr Jyotika Virmani. 鈥淏eing right there when this iceberg calved from the ice shelf presented a rare scientific opportunity. advances in quantum sensors capable of detecting cells and molecules, potentially orders of magnitude more sensitively than traditional diagnostic tests.</p> <p>This includes developing quantum-enhanced blood tests to diagnose infectious diseases and cancer quickly and cheaply using portable instruments, and sensors measuring tiny changes to the magnetic fields in the brain that have the potential to detect early markers of Alzheimer鈥檚 disease before symptoms occur.</p> <p>Other research will include quantum-enhanced MRI scans, heart scanners and surgical and treatment interventions for early-stage and hard-to-treat cancers.</p> <p>鈥淨uantum technologies harness quantum physics to achieve a functionality or a performance which is otherwise unattainable, deriving from science which cannot be explained by classical physics,鈥 said Hub Co-Director Professor Mete Atat眉re, Head of Cambridge鈥檚 Cavendish Laboratory. 鈥淨-BIOMED will be delivered by an outstanding team of researchers from academia, the NHS, charities, government and industry to exploit quantum-enhanced advances for human health and societal good.鈥</p> <p>鈥淥ur hub aims to grow a new quantum for health While this 鈥榤ental simulation鈥 is central to how we plan and make decisions in everyday life, how the brain works to accomplish this is not well understood.聽</p>&#13; &#13; <p>An international team of scientists has now uncovered neural mechanisms used in planning. Their <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41593-024-01675-7">results</a>, published in the journal <em>Nature Neuroscience</em>, suggest that an interplay between the brain鈥檚 prefrontal cortex and hippocampus allows us to imagine future outcomes to guide our decisions.</p>&#13; &#13; <p>鈥 探花直播prefrontal cortex acts as a 鈥榮imulator,鈥 mentally testing out possible actions using a cognitive map stored in the hippocampus,鈥 said co-author Marcelo Mattar from New York 探花直播. 鈥淭his research sheds light on the neural and cognitive mechanisms of planning鈥攁 core component of human and animal intelligence. A deeper understanding of these brain mechanisms could ultimately improve the treatment of disorders affecting decision-making abilities.鈥</p>&#13; &#13; <p> 探花直播roles of both the prefrontal cortex鈥攗sed in planning and decision-making鈥攁nd hippocampus鈥攗sed in memory formation and storage鈥攈ave long been established. However, their specific duties in deliberative decision-making, which are the types of decisions that require us to think before acting, are less clear.</p>&#13; &#13; <p>To illuminate the neural mechanisms of planning, Mattar and his colleagues鈥擪ristopher Jensen from 探花直播 College London and <a href="https://cbl.eng.cam.ac.uk/hennequin/">Professor Guillaume Hennequin</a> from Cambridge鈥檚 Department of Engineering 鈥攄eveloped a computational model to predict brain activity during planning. They then analysed data from both humans and rats to confirm the validity of the model鈥攁 recurrent neural network (RNN), which learns patterns based on incoming information.聽</p>&#13; &#13; <p> 探花直播model took into account existing knowledge of planning and added new layers of complexity, including 鈥榠magined actions,鈥 thereby capturing how decision-making involves weighing the impact of potential choices鈥攕imilar to how a chess player envisions sequences of moves before committing to one. These mental simulations of potential futures, modelled as interactions between the prefrontal cortex and hippocampus, enable us to rapidly adapt to new environments, such as taking a detour after finding a road is blocked.</p>&#13; &#13; <p> 探花直播scientists validated this computational model using both behavioural and neural data. To assess the model鈥檚 ability to predict behaviour, the scientists conducted an experiment measuring how humans navigated an online maze on a computer screen and how long they had to think before each step.</p>&#13; &#13; <p>To validate the model鈥檚 predictions about the role of the hippocampus in planning, they analysed neural recordings from rodents navigating a physical maze configured in the same way as in the human experiment. By giving a similar task to humans and rats, the researchers could draw parallels between the behavioural and neural data鈥攁n innovative aspect of this research.</p>&#13; &#13; <p>鈥淎llowing neural networks to decide for themselves when to 'pause and think' was a great idea, and it was surprising to see that in situations聽where humans spend time pondering what to do next, so do these neural networks,鈥 said Hennequin.聽</p>&#13; &#13; <p> 探花直播experimental results were consistent with the computational model, showing an intricate interaction between the prefrontal cortex and hippocampus. In the human experiments, participants鈥 brain activity reflected more time thinking before acting in navigating the maze. In the experiments with laboratory rats, the animals鈥 neural responses in moving through the maze resembled the model鈥檚 simulations.</p>&#13; &#13; <p>鈥淥verall, this work provides foundational knowledge on how these brain circuits enable us to think before we act in order to make better decisions,鈥 said Mattar. 鈥淚n addition, a method in which both human and animal experimental participants and RNNs were all trained to perform the same task offers an innovative and foundational way to gain insights into behaviours.鈥</p>&#13; &#13; <p>鈥淭his new framework聽will enable systematic studies of thinking聽at the neural level,鈥 said Hennequin.聽鈥淭his will require a concerted effort from neurophysiologists and theorists, and I'm excited about the discoveries that lie ahead.鈥澛</p>&#13; &#13; <p><em><strong>Reference:</strong><br />&#13; Kristopher T. More than half of all sickness absence days can be attributed to mental health conditions. It is estimated that economic losses caused by mental health problems account for about 4.1% of UK GDP, and that better mental health support in the workplace can save UK businesses up to 拢8 billion per year.</p>&#13; &#13; <p> 探花直播researchers analysed data from almost 20,000 people aged between 16 and 65 across 20 industries. This data was collected as part of the Health Survey for England, a representative repeated cross-sectional survey of people in England, looking at changes in the health and lifestyles of people all over the country. 探花直播results are published in Frontiers in Public Health.</p>&#13; &#13; <p> 探花直播team found an overall increase in the proportion of people reporting mental health problems, up from 16.0% in 2012-14 to 18.8% in 2016-2018. None of the industries studied experienced significant decreases in prevalence, but three industries 鈥 wholesale and retail trade, repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles; construction; and other service activities 鈥 saw significant increases.</p>&#13; &#13; <p>Common mental health problems were most prevalent among those who were not working, with around one in three (33.7%) people reporting problems. In the hospitality sector (accommodation and food services) and real estate, just under one in four people (23.8% and 23.6, respectively) reported mental health problems.</p>&#13; &#13; <p> 探花直播lowest prevalence was seen among professional, scientific and technical activities (15.0%), agriculture, forestry and fishing (9.6%) and mining and quarrying (6.2%).</p>&#13; &#13; <p>Dr Shanquan Chen from the Department of Psychiatry, 探花直播 of Cambridge, said: 鈥淛obs that involve working face to face with the public, particularly where the employee has a degree of responsibility, and those that involve working irregular and long hours can all be emotionally demanding or even expose employees to violence and verbal aggression. This in turn could contribute to higher rates of mental health problems.鈥</p>&#13; &#13; <p>鈥淣evertheless, we would still strongly encourage industry leaders 鈥 particularly in those sectors that fare worst, such as the hospitality and real estate sectors 鈥 to take an urgent look and try to identify and address the underlying issues.鈥</p>&#13; &#13; <p>In the majority of industries (11 out of 20), mental health problems were more common among females than they were among males. This was highest in the arts, entertainment and recreation sector, where more than one in four women (26.0%) reported problems compared to around one in 20 (5.6%) of men. Not working also appeared to have a much bigger impact on females (45.0%) compared to males (21.7%).</p>&#13; &#13; <p>From 2012-2014 to 2016-2018, gender disparities had widened in all but two sectors - human health and social work activities, and transport storage.</p>&#13; &#13; <p>Previous studies have identified some risk factors that have gender-specific impacts on mental health. For example, working full-time decreases the risk of mental problems among males, but not among females; fixed-term contract only increases the risk of mental problems among females; males are more affected by changes in tasks at work, while lack of training, low motivation and weak social support are drivers of mental problems among females.
