Students from across the country get a taste of studying at Cambridge at the Cambridge Festival

We were delighted to welcome pupils from Warrington’s Lymm High School, Ipswich High School, ̽��ֱ��Charter School in North Dulwich, Rickmansworth School, Sutton Valance School in Maidstone as well as schools closer to home such as St Peter’s Huntingdon, Fenstanton Primary School, Barton Primary School, Impington Village College and St Andrews School in Soham.

Running over two days (25/26 March 2025) and held in the Cambridge Sports Centre, students went on a great alien hunt with Dr Matt Bothwell from the Institute of Astronomy, stepped back in time to explore Must Farm with Department of Archaeology and the Cambridge Archaeological Unit as well as learning to disagree well with Dr Elizabeth Phillips from ̽��ֱ��Woolf Institute.

Schools had a choice of workshops from a range of departments including, how to think like an engineer and making sustainable food with biotechnology with researchers from the Department of Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology, as well as the chance to get hands-on experience in the world of materials science and explore how properties of materials can be influenced by temperature at the Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy.

̽��ֱ��Department of Veterinary Medicine offered students the opportunity to find out what a career in veterinary medicine may look like with workshops on animal x-rays, how different professionals work together to treat animals in a veterinary hospital as well as meeting the departments horses and cows and learn how veterinarians diagnose and treat these large animals.

Students also had the opportunity to learn about antibodies and our immune system with the MRC Toxicology Unit. ̽��ֱ��students learnt about the incredible job antibodies do defending our bodies against harmful invaders like bacteria and viruses.

Alongside this, a maths trail, developed by Cambridgeshire County Council, guided students around the West Cambridge site whilst testing their maths skills with a number of problems to solve.

Now in their third year, the Cambridge Festival schools days are offering students the opportunity to experience studying at Cambridge with a series of curriculum linked talks and hands on workshops.

̽��ֱ��Cambridge Festival runs from 19 March – 4 April and is a mixture of online, on-demand and in-person events covering all aspects of the world-leading research happening at Cambridge. ̽��ֱ��public have the chance to meet some of the researchers and thought-leaders working in some of the pioneering fields that will impact us all.

Over 500 KS2 and KS3 students from as far away as Warrington got the chance to experience studying at the ̽��ֱ�� of Cambridge with a selection of lectures and workshops held as part of the Cambridge Festival.

Colleges for mature students launch Cambridge 21+

“As someone who had spent some time working and then as a stay-at-home Mum, I did not have the confidence to imagine that a prestigious university such as Cambridge could ever be a viable option for me.”

Whilst many students returning to learning choose to take A-levels, Access courses are also an excellent option. They are designed for people thinking about returning to higher education after a gap and don’t have the conventional qualifications to enter a competitive course. Olivia thought ‘why not!’ and so applied.

”When I arrived at Wolfson College I found a warm, welcoming, and non-pressured environment.” Olivia is now in the second year of her English degree.

̽��ֱ�� ̽��ֱ�� of Cambridge has three colleges specifically for mature students aged 21 and over: Hughes Hall, St Edmund’s and Wolfson. ̽��ֱ��three colleges have come together to launch Cambridge 21+: an outreach programme aimed at UK students who will be 21 or over when they start their degree.

̽��ֱ��programme will offer information on studying at Cambridge, advice on making a competitive application and support with study skills. ̽��ֱ��programme starts with a series of free online advice sessions between the 20th to 22nd April. These will give a taste of what life is like for a mature student and tips on how to navigate the process of returning to the world of study. Participants will then be able to book free 1:1 video call advice sessions with Admissions Tutors from the three colleges and take up the opportunity for a free visit to the ̽��ֱ�� in July, when they can visit the colleges and meet other mature students.

Hannah Elkington, Outreach and Student Recruitment Officer at Wolfson College, says:

“ ̽��ֱ��application process can be daunting for someone who is returning to education after a period away. We want to make it as easy as possible to navigate. One of the things that we know a lot of potential students struggle with is the lack of confidence in believing they can secure a place. There are a range of courses that may suit them and their skillset so it’s often just a matter of tailoring their expertise to the right pathway. Cambridge 21+ is here to provide that inspiration and support.”

As Sophie, a third-year Education student at St Edmund’s explains:

“I had wanted to go to university but life kept getting in the way. I wished I’d applied when I was in school so I thought why not give it a go. I thought that it would be a bit of a long shot but I gave it a go and hoped for the best!”

And Beth, a Law student from Hughes Hall, says:

“It can be an incredibly daunting prospect to go to university a bit later, let alone applying to Cambridge. Try not to let those fears deter you from applying, it’s an incredible experience to be here, and you gain so much more from studying when you are a little bit older…you appreciate every moment so much more. So, apply, don’t be scared”

STEM SMART widening participation pilot will provide additional learning for hundreds of state school A-level students

̽��ֱ��17-month STEM SMART programme will support talented students’ classroom studies in maths and science throughout their final year-and-a-half at school - from the second term of Year 12 to their Year 13 A-level examinations. It is being launched to help bridge attainment gaps, mitigate educational disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, and address the UK’s skills shortage in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) subjects.

Beginning in January 2022, the programme also aims to build confidence in students who in addition to disruption caused by COVID-19 have experienced wider educational disadvantage, and encourage them to apply to study Engineering or physical sciences (such as Physics, Chemistry, and Materials Science) at top universities, including Cambridge. It is expected that many joining the programme will be at schools with little or no experience of sending students to Cambridge, so those who actively take part will be invited to attend a 4-day residential in Cambridge, when they will stay at a College, experience life as a Cambridge student, and consider whether to apply.

̽��ֱ��programme will support teaching already taking place in schools, providing extra resources including weekly online tutorials by Cambridge academics who will mark work and give students individual feedback, small group supervisions, and live online motivational lectures. In addition, students will be assigned a Cambridge student as a mentor, to speak to about university life and help support their continued engagement with the programme.

STEM SMART will also help students who do not wish to apply for undergraduate study at Cambridge to make competitive applications to STEM courses at other universities, with sustained engagement on the programme leading to an award that can be included in their UCAS personal statement as an example of super-curricular activity.

̽��ֱ��initiative is open to Maths, Physics and Chemistry A-level (or equivalent) students at non-fee-paying schools from widening participation backgrounds. This will include students who live in areas of high deprivation, those who have been eligible for free school meals at any point during their secondary schooling, those who are care-experienced, those at schools unable to offer Further Mathematics as an A-level, and mature students who are self-studying, among others.

̽��ֱ�� ̽��ֱ�� is in contact with around 3,000 state schools across the UK about STEM SMART, and aims to enrol around 750 A-level students for the start of the pilot, much of which will be delivered through the Isaac Physics online platform. It will be free to all students taking part, following generous support and funding from the ̽��ֱ��, Colleges and the Department for Education England.

Physics lecturer Dr Lisa Jardine-Wright, who is co-directing the STEM SMART programme, said she herself would have benefited from a similar initiative during her own education. “By providing extra subject specific resources that just aren’t available in every school, this pilot will complement students’ classroom learning, improve their problem-solving skills, and help them get the best possible grades.

“It’s also about motivational support and building confidence, and while helping students to maximise their attainment the programme aims to encourage those who take part successfully to apply to study at Cambridge, or another higher-tariff university. Small group supervisions and a four-day residential ‘boot camp’ will offer students a taste of life as a Cambridge student, and advice and guidance on applying to Cambridge, if they choose to, including preparing for admissions assessments and interviews.”

David Buckley, Head of Physics at Mayflower High School, an academy in Billericay, Essex, said: “Our students have had an unprecedented, difficult, time in their education, so this additional tuition – the extra time and detail that teachers want to give but because of the demands of the job sometimes can’t – is hugely welcome, particularly now.

“Being able to meet and work with Cambridge ̽��ֱ�� experts and current Cambridge undergraduates, to see how they approach particular problems, and find out about life around their courses, really is a unique opportunity for our students. All teachers want their students to do as well as possible and achieve their potential, whether that’s at Cambridge or another top university.”

Dr Michael Sutherland, co-director of STEM SMART, and Director of Studies in Natural Sciences at Corpus Christi College, said: “Building on Cambridge’s work to find innovative new ways to further diversify our student body, the programme will offer enhanced additional learning to support the vital work of teachers, give students the specific skills they need to prepare for university, and boost innovation and technology in the UK by helping to address the skills shortage in STEM.”

This is support for those talented students who need it most, at a time when it is needed more than ever.”

̽��ֱ��programme continues widening participation progress made by the ̽��ֱ�� in recent years, including the launch of a Foundation Year for Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, which from 2022 will offer talented students from backgrounds of educational and social disadvantage a new route to undergraduate study, and the use of UCAS Adjustment to reconsider candidates who exceed expectations in examinations.

Professor Stephen J Toope set out a plan of action based on three overarching objectives.

̽��ֱ��first is to see the ̽��ֱ�� of Cambridge retain its reputation as a global leader in interdisciplinary discovery and innovation, the second is to ensure its rigorous education is increasingly open to talented students from all backgrounds and the third is to make extraordinary contributions that address the fundamental issues facing society.

As part of plans to act on these three objectives, the Vice-Chancellor said the ̽��ֱ�� has the critical mass to establish a Cambridge Initiative on Mind, Brain and Body to help answer the growing challenges of mental health.

That initiative will link together a network of researchers – from neuroscience and neurology to genetics and physics; from psychology and psychiatry to computer science and anthropology – to address widespread conditions such as depression, addiction, psychosis and neurodegenerative disease.

He highlighted the Collegiate ̽��ֱ��’s determination to address barriers in education, widen access and help students make the most of their experience at Cambridge.

̽��ֱ��Vice-Chancellor noted the success of the first year of Adjustment, which saw Colleges collectively recruit 67 students whose grades exceeded their expected performance.

Provisional admissions data showed that one in four students will be from under-represented and disadvantaged backgrounds in the 2019/20 intake, while over two-thirds of UK undergraduates will be from state schools. For the first time, more than 25% of admitted undergraduates are of Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic background.

Professor Toope said the Transition Year he spoke about a year ago will be ready to launch in 2021. A course director has been appointed and the first intake of students will begin in October 2022.

Harding Challenge

̽��ֱ��Vice-Chancellor was also very pleased to share news of the creation of the Harding Challenge – a dedicated fund which makes it possible for the ̽��ֱ�� to do more for undergraduate students in the greatest financial need. Through this fund, new donors who give to Cambridge’s student support initiative will see their impact doubled – yet another of the many things the extraordinary £100 million gift earlier this year from David and Claudia Harding has enabled.

Toope said the initiatives showed that the ̽��ֱ�� is already making great strides in fulfilling the commitments it has made as part of its Access and Participation Plan recently accepted by the Office for Students.

Addressing fundamental issues facing society

On tackling the fundamental global challenges, the Vice-Chancellor announced that, later this term, the ̽��ֱ�� will formally launch Cambridge Zero – the ̽��ֱ��'s effort to support the global transition to a carbon neutral future.

Under the direction of Dr Emily Shuckburgh, Cambridge Zero will harness the full breadth of the ̽��ֱ��’s research and teaching capabilities to respond to climate change and support the transition to a zero-carbon future.

̽��ֱ��initiative will develop a bold programme of education, research, demonstration projects and knowledge exchange to address holistically the challenge of climate change; to help think about what a sustainable future looks like; and to ensure that policy decisions are based on the best available evidence.

Through Cambridge Zero, Cambridge will engage in active collaboration with other universities and research institutes in the UK and beyond, including the newly established Global Universities Alliance on Climate.

Digital learning

̽��ֱ��Vice-Chancellor said it was a landmark year for Cambridge ̽��ֱ�� Press, Cambridge Assessment, the Faculty of Education and the Department of Psychology, who last autumn joined forces with UNICEF and Microsoft to develop a programme that will enable refugees and displaced children to keep learning, and to receive the appropriate certification.

He was excited to share that, working with CUP and Cambridge Assessment, the ̽��ֱ�� is partnering with edX, the digital learning platform founded by Harvard and MIT, and now home to more than 20 million learners.

"Through this partnership, we will be reaping the benefits of digital learning here in Cambridge whilst also reducing the barriers to high-quality, Cambridge-made content for learners around the world," Toope said.

Brexit

On Brexit, Professor Toope said conditions under which it may happen remain uncertain, but the ̽��ֱ�� continues to plan for the contingency of a disorderly and disruptive exit.

He thanked those across the ̽��ֱ�� who have been working tirelessly to plan and prepare for Brexit in whatever form it may take and said the ̽��ֱ�� continued to make representations to government about the effect a no-deal Brexit would have on the movement of talented people that the UK needs, and on the country’s future participation in EU research programmes.

"We are no more certain now about the conditions under which it may happen, but we have continued to plan for the contingency of a disorderly and disruptive exit," Toope said.

̽��ֱ��Vice-Chancellor welcomed the government’s statement about the change in immigration rules designed to attract more international scientists to the UK and said he was enthusiastic about the recent government proposal to reintroduce a two-year post-study work visa for international students – something that Cambridge and other universities have long campaigned for.

He expressed the ̽��ֱ��'s continuing concern for and determination to support staff and students affected by Brexit.

̽��ֱ�� ̽��ֱ�� will also continue its efforts to look for collaborations across the planet, reaching out to its partners around the world – from Munich to Nanjing, from Paris to Delhi – to show through our actions, not only our words, that we are a global university open to global collaboration.

Professor Toope said that as the UK struggles to define its role in what may be a post-Brexit world, it was his sincerest hope that Cambridge will help articulate some of the answers.

"When other institutions are perceived to be failing their societies, our ̽��ֱ�� must step up," Toope said. "It is our duty as a public institution."

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the ̽��ֱ��’s association with the Sutton Trust, a charitable foundation which was set up by the philanthropist Sir Peter Lampl to promote equality in educational opportunity for all young people, regardless of their background.

Since 1998 more than 6,000 young people have attended Sutton Trust summer schools offered by the ̽��ֱ��.

More than 500 have gone on to study in Cambridge, with many more feeling inspired to apply to other Russell Group Universities.

For the first time, this year, the summer schools are taking place over 6 days - from Monday to Saturday.

When Jenny O’Sullivan came to Cambridge from Huddersfield for her first summer school in 2014 she found the experience extremely helpful in planning her degree.

This paved the way for her to read German and Spanish at King’s College, Cambridge. She’ll be volunteering as a student ambassador this summer, for the second time, offering advice to young people who she hopes will follow in her footsteps.

“Going on both of the summer schools as a student is honestly one of my happiest memories.

"I had such a good time and it made me feel like getting into Cambridge, or Oxford, was possible.

"So getting the chance to relive that and provide the experience for others from similar backgrounds is something I knew from the start I wanted to be part of.”

̽��ֱ��Sutton Trust aims to raise aspirations among pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds by providing universities with a framework to pass on practical advice on how to secure a place on a course.

Summer schools are a key component of the diverse range of work being undertaken at Cambridge to widen participation.

This has led to 64% of its new undergraduates coming from state schools, the highest rate on record.

They’ll come from all corners of the UK, keen to find ways of achieving their dream of becoming an undergraduate at one of the world’s leading academic institutions.

Supporting high-achieving black students

Target Oxbridge provides 16 – 18 year old black African and Caribbean students with positive role models and practical advice. ̽��ֱ��development programme runs over the course of a year and involves residential visits and academic sessions. When they visit Cambridge, participants will have an immersive experience of life at the university, including taking part in tutorials and meeting both staff and current students.

Since 2012, 46 Target Oxbridge students have already gone on to receive offers from the two universities. Eleven former participants are currently studying at Cambridge and have welcomed the new sponsorship.

̽��ֱ�� ̽��ֱ��’s support, alongside Oxford’s, will help Target Oxbridge to expand its places from 45 to 60 in 2018, double the number available in 2016. ̽��ֱ��programme is run by Rare, a specialist diversity recruitment company, and its patron is Cambridge alumna, Zadie Smith, who has previously said:

“Going to Cambridge changed my life. Nothing I have done would have been possible without it. I want more people from backgrounds like mine to have that life-changing experience. That's what Target Oxbridge is about”.

Imani McEwen, a Modern Languages student at Clare College, and currently on her Year Abroad in the Canary Islands, said:

"Coming from a background in which you weren't expected to study at a place like Cambridge and then making it here gives a constant feeling of accomplishment. Once you're here the sky is really the limit, anything is achievable. It may seem a daunting task to get in from the outside, but anyone with the right attitude can achieve and excel here.
