Their discovery could聽</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">streamline</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">聽efforts to increase聽</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">the聽</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">efficiency</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">聽of perovskites</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">, bringing聽</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">them聽</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">closer to mass-market production.聽</span>聽聽聽</p>&#13; </div>&#13; &#13; <div style="clear: both;">&#13; <p paraeid="{023bc3ca-ebcf-42b0-8515-94c921894407}{124}" paraid="1963215236"><span data-contrast="none" xml:lang="EN-US">Perovskite materials are much more tolerant of defects in their structure than silicon solar cells, and previous research carried out by聽</span><span data-contrast="none" xml:lang="EN-US">Stranks鈥</span><span data-contrast="none" xml:lang="EN-US">s</span><span data-contrast="none" xml:lang="EN-US">聽group found that to a certain extent,聽</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">some heterogeneity in their聽</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">composition</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">聽actually improves their聽</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">performance as solar c</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">ells and light-emitters</span><span data-contrast="none" xml:lang="EN-US">.聽</span>聽</p>&#13; </div>&#13; &#13; <div style="clear: both;">&#13; <p paraeid="{023bc3ca-ebcf-42b0-8515-94c921894407}{153}" paraid="687425960"><span data-contrast="none" xml:lang="EN-US">However, the current limitation of perovskite materials is the presence of a '</span><span data-contrast="none" xml:lang="EN-US">deep trap'聽caused by a defect, or minor blemish, in the material</span><span data-contrast="none" xml:lang="EN-US">.</span>聽<span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">These are areas in the material where聽</span>energised聽charge聽<span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">carriers can get stuck and recombine, losing their energy to heat, rather than converting聽</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">it</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">聽into useful electricity or light. This recombination process can have a significant impact on the efficiency</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">聽and stability</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">聽of solar panels and LEDs.</span>聽聽</p>&#13; </div>&#13; &#13; <div style="clear: both;">&#13; <p paraeid="{023bc3ca-ebcf-42b0-8515-94c921894407}{185}" paraid="1196703816"><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">Until now, very little was known about the cause of these traps</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">, in part because they appear to behave聽differently to traps in traditional solar cell materials</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">.聽</span>聽</p>&#13; </div>&#13; &#13; <div style="clear: both;">&#13; <p paraeid="{023bc3ca-ebcf-42b0-8515-94c921894407}{195}" paraid="104002300"><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">In 2015</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">,</span>聽<span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">Stranks</span>聽<span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">and colleagues聽</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">published</span>聽<span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">a paper in聽</span><em><a href="https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/science.aaa5333" rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank"><span data-contrast="none" xml:lang="EN-US"><span data-ccp-charstyle="Hyperlink">Science</span></span></a></em>聽l<span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">ooking</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">聽at the luminescence of聽</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">perovskites</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">, which聽</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">reveals</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">聽how good they are</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">聽at absorbing or emitting light</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">.聽</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">鈥</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">W</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">e found that聽</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">the material</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">聽was very heterogeneous</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">;</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">聽y</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">ou had quite</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">聽large regions that were bright and</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">聽luminescent聽and other regions that were really dark</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">,鈥澛</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">said</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">聽Stranks</span>.聽<span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">鈥</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">These dark regions correspond to power losses in solar cells or LEDs.</span>聽<span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">But</span>聽<span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">what was causing th</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">e power loss</span>聽<span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">was always a mystery</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">,聽</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">especially because</span>聽<span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">perovskites</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">聽are otherwise so defect</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">-</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">tolerant</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">.</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">鈥</span>聽</p>&#13; </div>&#13; &#13; <div style="clear: both;">&#13; <p paraeid="{fe80beb4-a05b-43d6-91d8-56a81b5644aa}{59}" paraid="706121782"><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">Due to limitations of standard imaging techniques, the group聽</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">couldn鈥檛</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">聽tell if the darker areas were caused by one, large聽</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">trap site</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">, or many smaller traps, making it difficult to establish why they were forming</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">聽only</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">聽in certain regions</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">.聽</span>聽</p>&#13; </div>&#13; &#13; <div style="clear: both;">&#13; <p paraeid="{fe80beb4-a05b-43d6-91d8-56a81b5644aa}{79}" paraid="320318876">In 2017,聽<span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">Dani鈥檚 group at OIST聽</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">made</span>聽<span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">a聽</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US"><a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/nnano.2016.183">movie</a> of how electrons聽</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">behave</span>聽<span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">in聽</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">semiconductors</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">聽after absorbing light. 鈥</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">You can learn a lot from being able to see how charges move in a material or device after shining li</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">ght</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">.聽</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">For example, you c</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">an</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">聽see where they might be getting trapped,鈥</span>聽<span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">said聽Dani</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">.聽</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">鈥</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">However,聽</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">these聽</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">charges聽</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">are hard to visualise as they聽</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">move very fast</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">聽鈥 on the timescale of a millionth of a billionth of a second;</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">聽and over very short distances</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">聽鈥 on the length</span>聽<span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">scale of a</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">聽billionth of a聽</span>met<span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">r</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">e</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">.</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">鈥</span>聽聽</p>&#13; </div>&#13; &#13; <div style="clear: both;">&#13; <p paraeid="{fe80beb4-a05b-43d6-91d8-56a81b5644aa}{233}" paraid="485577356"><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">When they looked at the聽material, t</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">hey</span>聽<span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">found</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">聽that the</span>聽<span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">dark regions contained聽</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">traps</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">,</span>聽<span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">around</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">聽10-100 nanometers in length,聽</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">which聽</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">were clusters of smaller atomic-sized trap sites. These trap clusters were spread unevenly throughout the perovskite material, explaining聽</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">the heterogeneous luminescence seen in聽</span>Stranks鈥檚聽earlier research<span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">.</span>聽</p>&#13; </div>&#13; &#13; <div style="clear: both;">&#13; <p paraeid="{7fdb5bd9-9ab7-4d69-a0fd-102d4787577c}{30}" paraid="209746868"><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">When the researchers overlaid images of the trap sites onto images that showed the crystal grains of the perovskite material, they found that the trap clusters only formed at specific places, at the boundaries between certain grains.</span>聽</p>&#13; </div>&#13; &#13; <div style="clear: both;">&#13; <p paraeid="{e66dcee6-bf9d-4ecf-ac71-d306e29d845e}{58}" paraid="1152744103"><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">鈥淚n perovskites</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">,</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">聽we have regular mosaic grains of material and m</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">ost of t</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">he grains are nice and pristine 鈥 the structure we would expect,鈥澛</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">said</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">聽Stranks</span>.聽<span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">鈥</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">But e</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">very now聽</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">and again</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">,</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">聽you get a</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">聽grain that's slightly distorted and the chemistry of that聽</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">grain聽</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">is inhomogeneous. W</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">hat was really interesting and聽</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">which initially confused us聽</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">was that聽</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">it's not聽</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">the distorted grain</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">聽that's the trap</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">聽but</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">聽whe</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">re</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">聽that聽</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">grain meets a pristine grain; it's at that junction that the</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">聽traps聽</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">cluster</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">.</span><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-US">鈥</span>聽聽</p>&#13;
