It will show how different kinds of supports can boost individual mental wellbeing, enhance productivity and promote a healthy workforce for the future.</p> <p>KPMG will open its doors to Cambridge researchers, who will assess the effectiveness of the mental wellbeing initiatives the firm currently offers to its circa 16,000 UK employees. This will develop an evidence base of what works, and how new support measures can be developed and evaluated to meet employees鈥 future needs. 探花直播firm will use these insights to invest in and evolve its package of mental wellbeing support.</p> <p> 探花直播firm will also share its research with the wider business community, to help them support their own workforce and reduce attrition and wellbeing related absence. It also aims to provide empirical evidence clearly demonstrating the link between employee mental wellbeing and improved productivity.</p> <p>Jon Holt, Chief Executive of KPMG UK, said: 鈥淢ental wellbeing is a global issue and a leading concern on the minds of the business leaders I speak to. Businesses need research and data to help them invest in the right areas to support their staff through a huge period of change, as we emerge from the pandemic and introduce new ways of working.</p> <p>鈥淏ut mental wellbeing at work is an under researched area and it is hard to access empirical data evidencing clear links between mental wellbeing policies and better employee health.聽</p> <p>鈥淭his partnership with the very best academics in their field seeks to address this and provide real answers on what works. It aims to help leaders support their people to thrive at work, which in turn will lift productivity and deliver wider benefits to the economy.鈥</p> <p>Professor Gordon Harold, who is leading the mental wellbeing programme for the partnership, said: "Mental health is the bedrock of a healthy, productive and positive society. By 2030 depression will be a leading cause of mortality and morbidity globally, with significant implications for individuals, society and the future of work. Promoting positive mental health and supporting those who experience or are at risk of mental ill health is now a national and global priority.鈥</p> <p>Professor Andy Neely, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Enterprise and Business Relations at the 探花直播 of Cambridge said: 鈥淲ork 鈥 what we do, how and where we do it and what it means for individuals, organisations and wider society 鈥 is changing. This ambitious partnership will bring together Cambridge researchers from a wide range of disciplines to reimagine the world of work and to co-create with KPMG effective strategies and interventions that will benefit both its workforce and those of organisations worldwide.</p> <p>鈥淔inding the best ways to support mental wellbeing at work is an urgent and important task, and the starting point for this partnership which will explore more broadly how can we enable meaningful work that addresses society鈥檚 needs.鈥澛</p> <p> 探花直播announcement is part of KPMG鈥檚 拢300m three-year strategy to transform and grow its business, as it invests in new insight and services to support its clients and its people.聽聽</p> <p>It also forms part of a wider partnership between KPMG and the 探花直播 of Cambridge, which aims to examine the big issues affecting work and society, such as the impact of digital technologies, the global distribution of work and Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG), and to provide evidence-based, actionable insights. In September last year, the firm unveiled a training programme with Cambridge Judge Business School, which will deliver ESG training to KPMG鈥檚 227,000 global workforce.</p> <p><a href="/stories/future-of-work">Read more about the Future of Work partnership</a>.</p> </div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-content-summary field-type-text-with-summary field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><p><p>New five-year partnership on the 鈥楩uture of Work鈥 will examine the big issues affecting the modern workforce and offer practical, research-backed solutions to employers</p> </p></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-image-credit field-type-link-field field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/" target="_blank">Priscilla Du Preez on Unsplash</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-cc-attribute-text field-type-text-long field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><p><a href="http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/" rel="license"><img alt="Creative Commons License" src="https://i.creativecommons.org/l/by/4.0/88x31.png" style="border-width:0" /></a><br /> 探花直播text in this work is licensed under a <a href="http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/">Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License</a>. She received the award for her work deepening understanding of children鈥檚 early language acquisition, which has created a basis for new, effective interventions for dyslexia.</p>&#13; &#13; <p> 探花直播conference more broadly aims to profile world-leading research that demonstrates how education can address major global challenges, and this year focused on wellbeing and education as one of its main themes: examining how schools, teachers and the education system in general can support children with mental health problems.</p>&#13; &#13; <p>Opening the event, Professor Toope announced that the 探花直播 will be creating a new role 鈥 Professor of the Psychology of Education and Mental Health 鈥 which will be based in its Faculty of Education. 探花直播first post-holder will be Professor Gordon Harold, currently at the 探花直播 of Sussex, who has led several, field-changing studies into the relationship between domestic adversity and young people鈥檚 mental health, enabling schools and teachers to do more to support pupils with depression, anxiety and other mental health problems.</p>&#13; &#13; <p>He will join a <a href="https://www.educ.cam.ac.uk/research/programmes/sigwellbeing/about/">wider research network</a> on wellbeing and inclusion within the Faculty of Education which is aiming to develop practical interventions and guidance for education professionals by addressing key, unanswered questions: such as how young people鈥檚 social relationships affect their learning, and how pupils and teachers can be better supported to cope with the various pressures of the education system.</p>&#13; &#13; <p>鈥淲e must not lose sight of the fact that mental health, as well as a scientific challenge, is also one of social science and education,鈥 Professor Toope said.</p>&#13; &#13; <p>He added: 鈥淭his goes beyond developing interventions for depression, anxiety, or other disorders. 探花直播promotion of positive mental health goes hand-in-hand with the task of helping future generations to enjoy greater opportunities and to become everything they can possibly be.鈥</p>&#13; &#13; <p>Although many countries treat mental health as a matter primarily for health and social care services, education researchers and professionals have long highlighted its relevance for education.</p>&#13; &#13; <p>That relationship was highlighted again in February, in Sir Michael Marmot鈥檚 '<a href="https://www.instituteofhealthequity.org/resources-reports/marmot-review-10-years-on">10 Years On鈥 review</a>, which directly links poor physical and mental health in deprived parts of England to a pattern of social inequality that includes cuts to education funding and children鈥檚 services. His findings echo <a href="https://digital.nhs.uk/data-and-information/publications/statistical/mental-health-of-children-and-young-people-in-england/2017/2017">recent NHS research</a> into children鈥檚 mental health, which suggests that 12.8% of five to 19-year-olds experience at least one mental disorder, and that these are more common among those from low-income backgrounds.</p>&#13; &#13; <p>Professor Harold鈥檚 work has demonstrated the significant impact that adversity early in life 鈥 such as conflict between parents 鈥 has on depression, anxiety and behavioural disorders, and, through this, young people鈥檚 attainment at school.</p>&#13; &#13; <p>He also led years of research that successfully challenged a thesis, popular among some education policy-makers, that young people鈥檚 academic attainment and behavioural development are principally governed by genetics. Professor Harold鈥檚 research has contested this assertion by studying the progress of children with biologically unrelated parents, such as IVF babies or those adopted at birth. This research has reinforced the significance of a child鈥檚 upbringing and environment for their mental health and development and how these experiences interact with and shape their genetic make-up.</p>&#13; &#13; <p>He is now leading the <a href="https://www.enurture.org.uk/">national 鈥榚nurture鈥 network</a>, a UKRI funded initative, which aims to provide effective advice to parents, teachers and policy makers about how emerging digital tools and social media can be used to influence their mental health positively, rather than hinder it.</p>&#13; &#13; <p>鈥淥ne of the most exciting things about coming to Cambridge is that there is so much globally impactful work on education and wellbeing already being done here, offering a unique opportunity to complement and enhance the focus on families, schools and mental health that my research and impact activities represent,鈥 Professor Harold said.</p>&#13; &#13; <p>鈥淭here are still big questions that we need to answer to help promote positive child and adolescent development, both from a scientific and a social perspective. By drawing on all of these different areas of research we can start to equip parents, teachers, practitioners, and policy-makers with the evidence, support and resources they need to promote positive mental health among young people today 鈥 and the adults of tomorrow.鈥</p>&#13; &#13; <p>This year鈥檚 Yidan conference also honoured the work of the 2019 Laureate, Sir Fazle Hasan Abed, who died in January this year. Sir Fazle was the Founder and Chair of BRAC, one of the world鈥檚 largest non-profit development organisations, which has set up hundreds of early childhood development centres, where close to 40,000 children are presently enrolled.</p>&#13; &#13; <p>Dr Charles Chen Yidan, the founder of the Prize, said: 鈥 探花直播2019 Laureates represent two very different approaches to ensuring that our children go on to lead happy, productive lives, but they also intersect. Both point to the need to achieve a better, deeper understanding of children鈥檚 needs. Through their work, we now see promising ways to help millions of lives around the world.鈥</p>&#13; &#13; <p>Further information about the Prize is available from the <a href="https://yidanprize.org/">Yidan Foundation website</a>.</p>&#13; </div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-content-summary field-type-text-with-summary field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><p><p> 探花直播new post will strengthen existing research into how better to support young people鈥檚 well-being and mental health, in particular through the education system.</p>&#13; </p></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-content-quote field-type-text-long field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even">We must not lose sight of the fact that mental health, as well as a scientific challenge, is also one of social science and education</div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-content-quote-name field-type-text field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even">Stephen Toope</div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-image-desctiprion field-type-text field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even">Professor Gordon Harold, Cambridge鈥檚 newly-appointed Professor of the Psychology of Education and Mental Health</div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-cc-attribute-text field-type-text-long field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><p><a href="http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/" rel="license"><img alt="Creative Commons License" src="https://i.creativecommons.org/l/by/4.0/88x31.png" style="border-width: 0px;" /></a><br />&#13; 探花直播text in this work is licensed under a <a href="http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/">Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License</a>.
