They will receive enhanced learning and encouragement from Cambridge academics and current students - around 300 of whom have come forward to mentor the sixth formers and answer their questions about university life.</p>
<p>As well as complementing the sixth formers鈥� classroom studies, the programme aims to build confidence in students who in addition to disruption caused by COVID-19 have experienced wider educational disadvantage, and encourage them to apply to study engineering or physical sciences (such as physics, chemistry, Earth sciences and materials science) at top universities, including Cambridge.</p>
<p>When STEM SMART was <a href="/news/stem-smart-widening-participation-pilot-will-provide-additional-learning-for-hundreds-of-state">announced in September</a>, the 探花直播 aimed to enrol around 750 A-level students for the start of the pilot, much of which will be delivered through the <a href="https://isaacphysics.org/">Isaac Physics</a> online platform. However following an enthusiastic response, more than 900 have been signed up nationwide, including in Belfast, Glasgow, Newcastle, Hull, Manchester, Liverpool, Plymouth, Cardiff and Bristol. It is expected that many joining the programme will be at schools with little or no experience of sending students to Cambridge, so those who actively take part will be invited to attend a 4-day residential in Cambridge, when they will stay at a College, experience life as a Cambridge student, and consider whether to apply.</p>
<p>Physics lecturer Dr Lisa Jardine-Wright, who is co-directing the STEM SMART programme, said: 鈥� 探花直播response to the launch of STEM SMART has been amazing, and we are delighted to confirm places for more than 900 students, around 150 more than originally anticipated. Every eligible student who applied has been offered a place on the 17-month course of enhanced learning and we look forward to welcoming them at our launch at the beginning of January.鈥�</p>
<p>Dr Michael Sutherland, co-director of STEM SMART, and Director of Studies in Natural Sciences at Corpus Christi College, said: 鈥淪TEM SMART draws on the expertise of the 探花直播鈥檚 staff, the support of its Colleges, and the experience of its students 鈥� who came forward in their hundreds to act as mentors to these sixth formers. This innovative programme will complement the vital work of teachers in schools, and builds on the 探花直播鈥檚 work to help talented students access top universities regardless of background.鈥�</p>
<p>STEM SMART (Subject Mastery and Attainment Raising Tuition) will provide A-Level (or equivalent) students with extra resources including weekly online tutorials by Cambridge academics who will mark work and give students individual feedback, small group supervisions, and live online motivational lectures. It will be free to all students taking part, following generous support and funding from the 探花直播, Colleges and the Department for Education England.聽</p>
<p> 探花直播programme continues widening participation progress made by the 探花直播 in recent years, including the launch of a聽<a href="/news/cambridge-foundation-year-offers-new-route-to-undergraduate-study-for-educationally-and-socially">Foundation Year聽for Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences</a>, which from 2022 will offer talented students from backgrounds of educational and social disadvantage a new route to undergraduate study, and the use of UCAS聽<a href="/news/cambridge-admits-first-tranche-of-second-chance-disadvantaged-students-in-diversity-boost">Adjustment</a>聽to reconsider candidates who exceed expectations in examinations.</p>

<p> 探花直播first pilot, STEM Start, was launched over the summer and provided subject revision and support for all students preparing to start their Natural Sciences course at the 探花直播 this month (October). In particular, the four-week online bridging programme aimed to build fluency and confidence in students who are less familiar with the demands that university study will make on their subject understanding, as well as their life skills.</p>
<p>STEM Start incorporates the 探花直播鈥檚 <a href="https://isaacphysics.org/">Isaac Physics</a> online programme, a mass-scale, national project which is already used by students in 78% of English schools. 探花直播initiative 鈥� which won the <a href="https://www.trin.cam.ac.uk/news/pioneering-physics-educator-wins-award/">2019 Lawrence Bragg Medal and Prize</a> - harnesses technology to help all students, especially those exposed to the national shortage of physics teachers, who can consequently be at a social disadvantage in pursuing STEM at university.</p>
<p> 探花直播pilot also introduced new students to some of the learning systems used at Cambridge and aimed to familiarise them with university life ahead of their arrival at the 探花直播.</p>
<p>Although face-to-face teaching such as lectures and small-group teaching聽will remain at the heart of a Cambridge education, the 探花直播 strongly believes there is scope for it to make greater strides in implementing technology to support teaching practice.</p>
<p>As part of TELP, the 探花直播 aims to launch more pilot studies between now and April 2020, looking at components of blended courses and fully-online courses, to support both existing taught provision and the development of distance learning. 探花直播pilots will investigate further support for A-Level students during their application to study some courses at Cambridge; opportunities to enhance undergraduate learning, for example elements of some courses could be taught online to allow students to make the most of staff contact time for practical work, and opportunities for online peer learning and discussion forums to benefit postgraduate students.</p>
<p>Michael Cresswell, Technology Enabled Learning Programme Lead, said: 鈥� 探花直播pilot programme signals a new direction for the 探花直播 in the way it aims to use digital technology to support teaching and learning for students. In particular, the potential that online tools hold for reaching out to and supporting prospective students from under-represented groups - both in the application process and during their preparation for the start of their course - is hugely exciting.鈥�</p>
<p>Professor Graham Virgo, Senior Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Education), said: 鈥淒igital technology has a crucial role to play in Cambridge鈥檚 educational experience and it is essential that we maximise the benefits of the most up-to-date innovations. As well as exploring how new technology can support students already studying at Cambridge, the TELP programme will also allow us to examine opportunities for new teaching programmes aimed at particular learner groups, with different needs, to make sure that the most talented people are encouraged to apply to Cambridge regardless of their background.鈥�</p>
