For example, 28 million people in the UK are living with chronic pain and 1.3 million people with traumatic brain injury.</p> <p>Neuro-technology 鈥 where technology is used to control the nervous system - has the potential to deliver new treatments for these disorders, in much the same way that heart pacemakers, cochlear implants and spinal implants have transformed medicine in recent decades.</p> <p> 探花直播technology can be in the form of electronic brain implants that reset abnormal brain activity or help deliver targeted drugs more effectively, brain-computer interfaces that control prosthetic limbs, or technologies that train the patient鈥檚 own cells to fight disease. ARIA鈥檚 Scalable Neural Interfaces opportunity space is exploring ways to make the technology more precise, less invasive, and applicable to a broader range of diseases.</p> <p>Currently, an implant can only interact with large groups of neurons, the cells that transmit information around the brain. Building devices that interact with single neurons will mean a more accurate treatment. Neuro-technologies also have the potential to treat autoimmune disorders, including rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn鈥檚 disease and type-1 diabetes.</p> <p> 探花直播science of building technology small enough, precise enough and cheap enough to make a global impact requires an environment where the best minds from across the UK can collaborate, dream up radical, risky ideas and test them without fear of failure.</p> <p>Professor George Malliaras from the 探花直播 of Cambridge鈥檚 Department of Engineering is one of the project leaders. 鈥淢iniaturised devices have the potential to change the lives of millions of people currently suffering from neurological conditions and diseases where drugs have no effect,鈥 he said. 鈥淏ut we are working at the very edge of what is possible in medicine, and it is hard to find the support and funding to try radical, new things. That is why the partnership with ARIA is so exhilarating, because it is giving brilliant people the tools to turn their original ideas into commercially viable devices that are cheap enough to have a global impact.鈥</p> <p>Cambridge鈥檚 partnership with ARIA will create a home for original thinkers who are struggling to find the funding, space and mentoring needed to stress-test their radical ideas. 探花直播three-year partnership is made up of two programmes:</p> <p><strong> 探花直播Fellowship Programme (up to 18 fellowships)</strong></p> <p>Blue Sky Fellows 鈥 a UK-wide offer - we will search the UK for people from any background, with a radical idea in this field and the plan and personal skills to develop it. 探花直播best people will be offered a fellowship with the funding to test their ideas in Cambridge rapidly. These Blue Sky Fellows will receive mentorship from our best medical, scientific and business experts and potentially be offered accommodation at a Cambridge college. We will be looking for a specific type of person to be a Blue Sky Fellow. They must be the kind of character who thinks at the very edge of the possible, who doesn鈥檛 fear failure, and whose ideas have the potential to change billions of lives, yet would struggle to find funding from existing sources. Not people who think outside the box, more people who don鈥檛 see a box at all.</p> <p>Activator Fellows - a UK-wide offer - those who have already proved that their idea can work, yet need support to turn it into a business, will be invited to become Activator Fellows. They will be offered training in entrepreneurial skills including grant writing, IP management and clinical validation, so their innovation can be ready for investment.</p> <p><strong> 探花直播Ecosystem Programme</strong></p> <p> 探花直播Ecosystem Programme is about creating a vibrant, UK-wide neurotechnology community where leaders from business, science, engineering, academia and the NHS can meet, spark ideas and form collaborations. It was approved in principle in September 2023, subject to a capital affordability review by NHS England and the Department for Health and Social Care鈥檚 Joint Investment Committee. That review took place in April 2024 and resulted in a recommendation to Ministers to endorse the decision.</p> <p>In a show of further confidence in its plans, the Outline Business Case was signed off by the Chief Secretary to the Treasury and the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care in August 2024. This approval recognises that the hospital will meet the needs of patients and staff across the East of England and that the project has the appropriate funding streams in place, to deliver the specialist children鈥檚 facility.</p> <p> 探花直播hospital is being co-designed with the help of children, young people, families and healthcare professionals across the region to ensure the new hospital will meet the needs of patients, families and staff.</p> <p>Dr Rob Heuschkel, Clinical Lead for Physical Health at Cambridge Children鈥檚 Hospital said:</p> <p>鈥淲e are absolutely delighted that we can now move forward to enter contracts with a construction partner, so we can finally start to see work happening on site.</p> <p>鈥淎 huge amount of work has gone into finalising the designs and getting us to this point, and I want to thank our healthcare staff, young people and their families from across the region who have been contributing valuable feedback and helping us shape our plans, right from the very start.</p> <p>鈥 探花直播East of England is the only region in the UK without a specialist children鈥檚 hospital, and we look forward to changing that very soon.鈥</p> <p> 探花直播approval comes as a programme of groundworks preparing for the build was completed in July, and new access roads have now been installed where the new five-storey, 35,000sqm hospital will be located, opposite the Rosie Maternity Hospital, on Robinson Way and Dame Mary Archer Way.</p> <p>In the coming weeks, people will be able to see hoardings installed around the site of Cambridge Children鈥檚 Hospital, the first hospital truly designed to bring mental and physical health care together for children and young people.</p> <p>Dr Isobel Heyman, Clinical Lead for Mental Health at Cambridge Children鈥檚 Hospital said:</p> <p>鈥淭his really is fantastic news and an exciting moment in our journey to build a truly integrated children鈥檚 hospital for the East of England.</p> <p>鈥 探花直播current model of mental health care is inadequate. They found that a region of the brain called the dorsal mid-insula showed different activity during interoception across a range of disorders, including depression, schizophrenia, eating disorders and anxiety disorders.</p> <p>Many people with mental health disorders experience physical symptoms differently, whether that鈥檚 feeling uncomfortably full in anorexia, or feeling like you don鈥檛 have enough air in panic disorder.</p> <p> 探花直播results, reported in <em> 探花直播American Journal of Psychiatry</em>, show that activity in the dorsal mid-insula could drive these different interpretations of bodily sensations in mental health. Increased awareness of the differences in how people experience physical symptoms could also be useful to those treating mental health disorders.</p> <p>We all use exteroception 鈥 sight, smell, hearing, taste and touch 鈥 to navigate daily life. But interoception 鈥 the ability to interpret signals from our body 鈥 is equally important for survival, even though it often happens subconsciously.</p> <p>鈥淚nteroception is something we are all doing constantly, although we might not be aware of it,鈥 said lead author Dr Camilla Nord from the MRC Cognition and Brain Sciences Unit. 鈥淔or example, most of us are able to interpret the signals of low blood sugar, such as tiredness or irritability, and know to eat something. However, there are differences in how our brains interpret these signals.鈥</p> <p>Differences in interoceptive processes have previously been identified in people with eating disorders, anxiety and depression, panic disorder, addiction and other mental health disorders. Theoretical models have suggested that disrupted cortical processing drives these changes in interoceptive processing, conferring vulnerability to a range of mental health symptoms.</p> <p>Nord and her colleagues combined brain imaging data from previous studies and compared differences in brain activity during interoception between 626 patients with mental health disorders and 610 healthy controls. 鈥淲e wanted to find out whether there is something similar happening in the brain in people with different mental disorders, irrespective of their diagnosis,鈥 she said.</p> <p>Their analysis showed that for patients with bipolar, anxiety, major depression, anorexia and schizophrenia, part of the cerebral cortex called the dorsal mid-insula showed different brain activation when processing pain, hunger and other interoceptive signals when compared to the control group.</p> <p> 探花直播researchers then ran a follow-up analysis and found that the dorsal mid-insula does not overlap with regions of the brain altered by antidepressant drugs or regions altered by psychological therapy, suggesting that it could be studied as a new target for future therapeutics to treat differences in interoception.</p> <p>鈥淚t鈥檚 surprising that in spite of the diversity of psychological symptoms, there appears to be a common factor in how physical signals are processed differently by the brain in mental health disorders,鈥 said Nord. 鈥淚t shows how intertwined physical and mental health are, but also the limitations of our diagnostic system 鈥 some important factors in mental health might be 鈥榯ransdiagnostic鈥, that is, found across many diagnoses.鈥</p> <p>In future, Dr Nord is planning studies to test whether this disrupted activation could be altered by new treatments for mental health disorders, such as brain stimulation.</p> <p> 探花直播research was supported by NIHR Cambridge Biomedical Research Centre.</p> <p><strong><em>Reference:</em></strong><br /> <em>Camilla L. Professor of Clinical Neurosciences and Associate Director of the UK Dementia Research Institute, Giovanna Mallucci discusses how new research leading to insights into dementia and degenerative brain diseases may lead to new treatments.</li>&#13; <li><strong>Improving quality and safety in healthcare </strong>(19 March). THIS Institute Director Professor Mary Dixon-Woods looks at the challenges to improving quality and safety in healthcare and considers why it鈥檚 so hard to answer the question: Does quality improvement actually improve quality? With Dr Fiona Godlee, Editor in Chief of 探花直播BMJ.</li>&#13; <li><strong>Immunology: the future of medicine?</strong> (19 March) Professor Clare Bryant and a panel of Cambridge immunologists discuss how understanding disease triggers may enable entirely new approaches to treating and potentially preventing disease.</li>&#13; <li><strong>Polar ocean: the dead end of plastic debris </strong>(19 March). An estimated 80% of all the litter in our oceans is plastic, and a significant concentration of plastics debris is found in both polar oceans. 探花直播impact of this debris on the sensitive polar ecosystem could be profound. Pelagic marine ecologist Dr Clara Manno, British Antarctic Survey, explores the current research and existing situation in the polar regions.</li>&#13; <li><strong>Reluctant futurist </strong>(19 March). Adolescence is characterised by huge physiological changes as well as a rapid rise in mental health disorders. Around 45% of adolescent mental health problems are caused by childhood difficulties but fortunately not all who experience difficulties develop mental health disorders. Dr Anne-Laura van Harmelen discusses mechanisms that may help adolescents with a history of childhood difficulty to become more resilient.</li>&#13; <li><strong>Making algorithms trustworthy</strong> (21 March). Increasingly, algorithms are being used to make judgements about sensitive parts of our lives. How do we check how their conclusions were arrived at, and if they are valid and fair? Professor David Spiegelhalter looks at efforts to make algorithms transparent and trustworthy, using systems that make predictions for people with cancer as an example.</li>&#13; <li><strong>On the future: prospects for humanity </strong>(22 March).
