̽��ֱ��Ramsden Preacher must preach on Church extension overseas, especially within the Commonwealth of Nations.

Professor Maxwell was educated at the Universities of Manchester and Oxford and his early career included three years teaching in a rural secondary school in Zimbabwe. A Lecturer in International History at Keele from 1994, he was appointed Professor of African History there in 2007, before moving to the Dixie Chair in Cambridge in 2011.

David Maxwell has held Visiting Fellowships or Residencies in Australia, Switzerland and Italy, and been an Honorary Fellow at the ̽��ֱ�� of Zimbabwe, at the Wits Institute for Social and Economic Research, ̽��ֱ�� of Witwatersrand, and at the Département des Sciences Historiques, ̽��ֱ�� of Lubumbashi, DRC.

Professor Maxwell's research interests include the 19th and 20th Century Missionary Movement, Missionary Encounter in Southern and Central Africa, Pentecostalism and Religious Transnationalism, Religious Movements and Politics and the History of Colonial Science. He has held major research grants from the ESRC and the Harry Frank Guggenheim Foundation.

His publications include Christians and Chiefs in Zimbabwe: A Social History of the Hwesa People c.1870s-1990s (1999) and African Gifts of the Spirit: Pentecostalism and the Rise of a Zimbabwean Transnational Religious Movement (2006).

In 2012 David Maxwell edited, with Patrick Harries, ̽��ֱ��Spiritual in the Secular, Missionaries and Knowledge about Africa.

David Maxwell, Dixie Professor of Ecclesiastical History and Fellow of Emmanuel College, will preach the Ramsden Sermon in Great St Mary's, the ̽��ֱ�� Church, at 11.15 a.m. on Whitsunday, 19 May.

This Sermon, on ' ̽��ֱ��Truth and Excellence of Revealed Religion, or the Evidence of Christianity' originates in the will of John Hulse, of St John's College, who died in 1790.

Professor Fergusson was educated in the Universities of Glasgow, Edinburgh and Oxford, served for several years as a parish minister in the Church of Scotland, and was formerly Professor of Systematic Theology in the ̽��ֱ�� of Aberdeen.

He researches Christian doctrine, ethics, and the history of Reformed theology, especially in Scotland.

Having served as President of the Society for the Study of Theology 2000-2002, he is a director and editorial board member of the Scottish Journal of Theology.

From 2005 to 2008 he chaired the UK Association of ̽��ֱ�� Departments of Theology and Religious Studies and from 2010 until 2012 he was the principal investigator for an AHRC/ESRC funded project on Christianity, Psychotherapy and Spirituality in Scotland from 1945 to 2000.

David Fergusson has delivered the Cunningham Lectures (Edinburgh), the Bampton Lectures (Oxford), the Gifford Lectures (Glasgow) and the Warfield Lectures (Princeton).

His recent publications include Church, State and Civil Society (CUP 2004) and Faith and Its Critics (OUP 2009). He was a co-editor of the Cambridge Dictionary of Theology (CUP 2011).
