Over half of the respondents said they felt more isolated now than they had before lockdown.

During the pandemic many estranged people have become more conscious of not having family to support them, for example to help with grocery shopping while they can鈥檛 go to the supermarket themselves. For some it has brought the realisation that their well-being is not important to other family members, and compounded the feeling of being unloved and uncared for.聽

78% of respondents had maintained the same level of non-contact with their estranged family member during lockdown, and 6% had experienced even less contact. One respondent said they hadn鈥檛 spoken to another person for over two months.聽

鈥淭here鈥檚 a lot of stigma around estrangement, and people in this situation have experienced it in a heightened way during lockdown. Many have become more aware that they have smaller support networks than others,鈥 said Dr Susan Imrie at the 探花直播 of Cambridge鈥檚 Centre for Family Research, who was involved in the study.

探花直播researchers say the importance of family relationships has been highlighted repeatedly throughout lockdown in television advertising, news headlines and social media. But for those who were already estranged from family, the pandemic and the messages surrounding it have compounded feelings of stigma and social isolation.

鈥淪ince lockdown began there has been a lot of talk about what family members should be doing to support each other at this time of crisis. We鈥檝e all been encouraged to keep in touch with relatives through Skype and FaceTime. But this has really compounded feelings of isolation for those who don鈥檛 have close family relationships,鈥 said Dr Sarah Foley at the 探花直播 of Cambridge鈥檚 Centre for Family Research, who was also involved in the study.

It is estimated that over five million people in the UK are estranged from a family member, but despite being so common it is not something that is widely known about or discussed.聽

鈥淒espite the assumption that family members will be a source of support during the COVID-19 crisis, this is not always the case. One in five families across the UK have no contact with an estranged family member, and this new report finds that very little has changed for them during the pandemic,鈥 said Dr Becca Bland, CEO of Stand Alone.

Stand Alone supports people who have more challenging experiences of family, and who are estranged from their entire family or a key family member. 探花直播reasons behind estrangement in the community are varied: some are surviving abuse and neglect, others have been distanced for coming out as LGBT+ or for rejecting cultural, religious and political values. It is the only charity in the UK that works to support people who are estranged from family members.

探花直播results of this study will help Stand Alone understand how best to target support during the pandemic. 探花直播researchers also hope it will raise awareness of family estrangement so that it can be handled more sensitively as lockdown continues.

探花直播researchers say it is difficult to know the extent to which the survey respondents reflect the level of estrangement from family across the UK population as a whole.

A minority of the survey respondents who were estranged from family said they actually felt more connected during lockdown because everyone else was suddenly unable to see their family too. They hoped this might help others understand their situation better.

鈥淒ifferent people are being affected differently by the lockdown. Advice about coping shouldn鈥檛 assume that everyone has family relationships that are close and loving. Even subtle changes in the language used could have a really positive effect on people鈥檚 experiences,鈥 said Dr Lucy Blake, Senior Lecturer in Children, Young People and Families at Edge Hill 探花直播, who was also involved in the study.

Reference
Family Estrangement and the COVID-19 Crisis: A closer look at how broken family relationships have been impacted by the COVID-19 crisis. This needs to change because difficulties in children鈥檚 early relationships with both mothers and fathers can have long-term effects.

鈥淲e have already shared our findings with the NCT (National Childbirth Trust) and we encourage the NHS and other organisations to reconsider the support they offer.鈥

探花直播study, published today in Development & Psychopathology, drew on the experiences of 438 first-time expectant mothers and fathers who were followed up at 4, 14 and 24 months after birth. These parents were recruited in the East of England, New York State (USA) and the Netherlands.

探花直播researchers found that the prenatal wellbeing of first-time mothers had a direct impact on the behaviour of their children by the time they were two years old. Mothers who suffered from stress and anxiety in the prenatal period were more likely to see their child display behavioural problems such as temper tantrums, restlessness and spitefulness.

探花直播researchers also found that two-year-olds were more likely to exhibit emotional problems 鈥 including being worried, unhappy and tearful; scaring easily; or being clingy in new situations 鈥 if their parents had been having early postnatal relationship problems. These ranged from a general lack of happiness in the relationship to rows and other kinds of conflict.

Hughes says: 鈥淥ur findings highlight the need for earlier and more effective support for couples to prepare them better for the transition to parenthood.鈥

Links between child outcomes and parental wellbeing have been shown in other studies, but this is the first to involve couples, track parental wellbeing in both parents over an extended period of time, and focus on child behaviour in the first two years of life. While there is growing evidence for the importance of mental health support for expectant and new mothers, this study highlights the need to extend this support to expectant fathers and to go beyond individual well-being to consider the quality of new mothers鈥 and fathers鈥 couple relationships.

探花直播researchers acknowledge that genetic factors are likely to play a role but they accounted for parents鈥 mental health difficulties prior to their first pregnancy and after their child鈥檚 birth. Co-author Dr Rory Devine, a developmental psychologist at the 探花直播 of Birmingham, says 鈥淥ur data demonstrate that mental health problems during pregnancy have a unique impact on children鈥檚 behavioural problems.鈥

Using standardized questionnaires and in-person interviews, participating mothers and fathers reported on their symptoms of anxiety and depression in the third trimester of pregnancy and when their child was 4, 14 and 24 months old. At each of these visits, parents also completed standardized questionnaire measures of couple relationship quality and children鈥檚 emotions and behaviour.

Hughes says: 鈥淭here has been an assumption that it鈥檚 really difficult to get dads involved in research like this. But our study draws on a relatively large sample and is unique because both parents answered the same questions at every stage, which enabled us to make direct comparisons.鈥

探花直播research is part of an ongoing project examining the wellbeing and influence of new mothers and fathers. In a closely linked study, published in Archives of Women鈥檚 Mental Health in July 2019, the team found that fathers share in traumatic memories of birth with their partners far more than has previously been recognised. This study compared the wellbeing of parents in the third trimester of pregnancy with that when their child was four months old.

Co-author, Dr Sarah Foley, also from Cambridge鈥檚 Centre for Family Research said: 鈥淚f mum has a difficult birth, that can be a potentially traumatic experience for dads.鈥

鈥淲hat both studies show is that we need to make antenatal support much more inclusive and give first-time mums and dads the tools they need to communicate with each other and better prepare them for this major transition. With resources stretched, parents are missing out on the support they need.鈥

This research was funded by the Economic and Social Research Council, the National Science Foundation, and the Dutch Research Council.

Expectant parents鈥 emotional struggles predict emotional and behavioural problems in 2-year-olds, new research shows. 探花直播same study reveals, for the first time, that couple conflict helps explain emotional problems in very young children.

For too long, the experiences of first-time dads has either been side-lined or treated in isolation from that of mums. For example, in interviews expectant parents were considered to have a 鈥榖alanced鈥 representation of their child if they showed positive anticipation of their relationship with the child or showed 鈥榤ind-mindedness鈥 鈥 a propensity to see their child as an individual, with its own thoughts and feelings. This was contrasted by parents who had a 鈥榙istorted鈥 representation of their child, with a narrow, idealised description of their child, and incomplete or inconsistent descriptions of them.

Once the child had been born, researchers in these studies would observe the interactions between parent and child. One measure they were looking for was 鈥榮ensitivity鈥 鈥 the ability to notice, interpret and respond in a聽 timely and appropriate manner to children鈥檚 signals, for example if the baby was upset. 聽

Combining the results from all 14 studies, the Cambridge team showed a modest association between positive thoughts and feelings about the infant during pregnancy and later interaction with the infant, but only in mothers.

鈥淪tudies have shown that parent-child interaction is crucial for a child鈥檚 development and learning, so we wanted to understand if there were prenatal signs that might predict a parent鈥檚 behaviour,鈥 says Dr Sarah Foley, the study鈥檚 first author, who carried out the research as part of her PhD.

鈥淎lthough we found a relationship between a mother鈥檚 attitude towards her baby during pregnancy and her later interactions, this link was only modest. This suggests it is likely to be a part of the jigsaw, rather than the whole story.鈥

Research has also shown that increased awareness of the baby during pregnancy is associated with healthy behaviours during pregnancy, such as giving up smoking or attending antenatal appointments.

While more work is needed to determine what form such interventions might take, options might include the midwife encouraging the mother to think about what her baby may be like, or asking the mother to imagine activities they think she and her baby might like to do together.

鈥淭his is a relatively new area of research, but could have important implications for children鈥檚 development,鈥 adds Dr Foley. 鈥淲e need more research in this area, but hope it will inform new interventions that could help new mothers engage more with their children.鈥

Dr Foley says there may be a number of factors that contribute to low levels of attachment with the baby during pregnancy. These include: previous experience of miscarriage, depression or anxiety, a mother鈥檚 relationship with her own parents, or cultures in which focusing on the baby is considered inappropriate. However, she says, the paucity of evidence means it is difficult to determine which of these factors would impact on prenatal thoughts about the infant, which might in turn influence the quality of later interaction with the infant.

探花直播study was funded by the Economic and Social Research Council.

Reference
Foley, S and Hughes, C. Great expectations?
