探花直播 of Cambridge - 探花直播Royal Society /taxonomy/external-affiliations/the-royal-society en Sowing seeds for timber skyscrapers can rewind the carbon footprint of the concrete industry /research/news/sowing-seeds-for-timber-skyscrapers-can-rewind-the-carbon-footprint-of-the-concrete-industry <div class="field field-name-field-news-image field-type-image field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><img class="cam-scale-with-grid" src="/sites/default/files/styles/content-580x288/public/news/news/riverbeechupshot.jpg?itok=3Sjgp_-P" alt="A skyscraper against a blue sky." title="River Beech Tower Chicago, Credit: None" /></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-body field-type-text-with-summary field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><p>Recent innovations in engineered timber have laid the foundations for the world鈥檚 first wooden skyscrapers to appear within a decade, a feat that is not only achievable鈥攁ccording to the Centre for Natural Material Innovation鈥攂ut one they hope will beckon in an era of sustainable wooden cities, helping reverse historic emissions from the construction industry.</p> <p> 探花直播research team based at the Faculty of Architecture, is interdisciplinary, composed of architects, biochemists, chemists, mathematicians and engineers, who specialise in plant-based material, including cross-laminated timber, arguably the first major structural innovation since the advent of reinforced concrete, 150 years ago.</p> <p>Principal Investigator Dr Michael Ramage, said 鈥淯ntil cross-laminated timber, there was simply no building material to challenge steel or reinforced concrete. To construct cities and indeed skyscrapers, we just had to accept the good and the bad of existing materials.</p> <p>鈥淐oncrete is about five times heavier than timber, which means more expense for foundations and transport; it鈥檚 resource-intensive, and contributes to tremendous carbon dioxide emissions. After water, concrete is the most consumed material by humanity. But now we have an alternative, and it鈥檚 plant-based.鈥</p> <p> 探花直播team envisage trees supplanting concrete as the predominant building material for cities, with buildings sown like seeds and cities harvested as crops, a way of simultaneously addressing climate change and global housing shortages.</p> <p>Dr Ramage聽explained: 鈥淚n England alone, we need to build 340,000 new homes each year over the next 12 years to accommodate our population. Concrete is unsustainable. Timber, however, is the only building material we can grow, and that actually reduces carbon dioxide. Every tonne of timber expunges 1.8 tonnes of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Doing the calculations, if all new English homes were constructed from timber, we could capture and offset the carbon footprints of around 850,000 people for 10 years.</p> <p>鈥 探花直播sustainable forests of Europe take just 7 seconds to grow the volume of timber required for a 3 bedroom apartment, and 4 hours to grow a 300 metre supertall skyscraper. Canada鈥檚 sustainable forests alone yield enough timber to house a billion people in perpetuity, with forested trees replenishing faster than their eventual occupants.鈥</p> <p>Various teams around the world are hoping聽to produce the tallest wooden skyscraper, however the team from Cambridge is confident they鈥檒l be the first, having done holistic work on three proposals for timber skyscrapers in London, Chicago, and the Hague, all of which are set to be showcased to the public at the <a href="https://royalsociety.org/science-events-and-lectures/2019/summer-science-exhibition/">Royal Society鈥檚 Summer Science Exhibition</a> 2019, freely open to the public from July 1鈥7.</p> <p> 探花直播team鈥檚 exhibit鈥<a href="https://royalsociety.org/science-events-and-lectures/2019/summer-science-exhibition/exhibits/">Timber towers of tomorrow</a>鈥攚ill embody their vision, the stand itself modelled after a typical apartment nested within their proposed Oakwood Timber Tower at the Barbican Tower, where visitors can experience life in a treehouse while talking with the team, viewing architectural models of timber towers, learning about the fire performance properties of engineered timber, and hearing about the genetic, cellular, and macroscale innovations which have led to ply in the sky designs becoming a reality.</p> <p>Beyond tackling climate change and promoting sustainability, the team are eager to outline the branching benefits society stands to gain by embracing timber architecture: the psychological well-being that comes from being surrounded by wood as compared with concrete, as well as the return to an ancient building material, that鈥檚 intimate as it is natural.</p> <p><strong>A bold response to the world鈥檚 greatest challenge</strong><br /> 探花直播 探花直播 of Cambridge is building on its existing research and launching an ambitious new environment and climate change initiative. <a href="https://www.zero.cam.ac.uk">Cambridge Zero</a> is not just about developing greener technologies. She was the first to demonstrate how protoplanetary disc formation around low-mass young stars is determined by their radiation field. In 2017 she became the first woman to be awarded the Eddington Medal by the Royal Astronomical Society and in聽2022 she became director of the Institute of Astronomy.</p>&#13; &#13; <p>She said: 鈥淚t's a great honour to join the many Cambridge astrophysicists who have held this title. In particular he is interested in studying how species converge due to mimicry as a model for understanding the predictability of evolution and the genetic and ecological causes of speciation. He demonstrated the importance of hybridisation and movement of genes between species in generating novel adaptations. He also works on the agricultural pest聽cotton bollworm and carries out genomic studies of the insect bioconversion species, black soldier fly.</p>&#13; &#13; <p>He said: 鈥淚 am amazed and delighted to receive this honour, and would thank all the amazing students, and postdocs that I have been lucky enough to work with over the years.鈥</p>&#13; &#13; <p>聽聽</p>&#13; &#13; <p><strong>Dr Philip Jones FRS</strong></p>&#13; &#13; <p><em>Senior Group Leader, Wellcome Sanger Institute and Professor of Cancer Development, 探花直播 of Cambridge, and Fellow of Clare College</em></p>&#13; &#13; <p>Jones studies how normal cell behaviour is altered by mutation in aging and the earliest stages of cancer development. He focuses on normal skin and oesophagus, which become a patchwork of mutant cells by middle age. He has found that different mutations can either promote or inhibit cancer development giving hope of new ways to prevent cancer in the future. He is also a Consultant in Medical Oncology at Addenbrooke鈥檚 Hospital in Cambridge.</p>&#13; &#13; <p>He said: 鈥淚 am delighted聽to be elected to the Fellowship of the Royal Society. This honour is a tribute to the dedication of my research team and collaborators and support of my mentors and scientific colleagues over many years.鈥</p>&#13; &#13; <p>聽</p>&#13; &#13; <p><strong>Dr Lori Passmore FRS</strong></p>&#13; &#13; <p><em>Group Leader, Structural Studies Division, MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology, and Fellow of Clare Hall</em></p>&#13; &#13; <p>Passmore a cryo-electron microscopist and structural biologist who works at the Medical Research Council (MRC) Laboratory of Molecular Biology and at the 探花直播 of Cambridge. She is known for her work on multiprotein complexes involved in gene expression and the development of new supports for cryo-EM studies.聽She also studies the molecular mechanisms underlying聽Fanconi anemia, a rare genetic disease resulting in an impaired response to DNA damage.</p>&#13; &#13; <p>She said: 鈥淚 am so honoured to be recognised alongside such an exceptional group of scientists. I am grateful to all the trainees, collaborators and colleagues whom I have worked with over the past years - science is truly collaborative and this is a recognition of all the courageous work of many people.鈥</p>&#13; &#13; <p>聽</p>&#13; &#13; <p><strong>Professor Peter Sewell FRS</strong></p>&#13; &#13; <p><em>Professor of Computer Science, Department of Computer Science and Technolog</em>y<em>, and Fellow of Wolfson College</em><br /><br />&#13; Sewell鈥檚 research aims to put the engineering of the real-world computer systems that we all depend on onto better foundations, developing techniques to make systems that are better-understood, more robust and more secure. He and his group are best known for their work on the subtle relaxed-memory concurrency behaviour and detailed sequential semantics of processors and programming languages. He co-leads the CHERI cybersecurity project, for which his team have established mathematically-proven security properties of Arm's Morello industrial prototype architecture.<br /><br />&#13; He said: 鈥淭his honour is a testament to the work of many excellent colleagues over the years, without whom none of this would have been possible.鈥</p>&#13; &#13; <p>聽</p>&#13; &#13; <p><strong>Professor Ivan Smith FRS</strong></p>&#13; &#13; <p><em>Professor of Geometry, Centre for Mathematical Sciences, and Fellow of Caius College</em></p>&#13; &#13; <p>Smith is a mathematician who deals with symplectic manifolds and their interaction with algebraic geometry, low-dimensional topology and dynamics. In 2007, he received the Whitehead Prize for his work in symplectic topology, highlighting the breadth of applied techniques from algebraic geometry and topology, and in 2013 the Adams Prize.聽</p>&#13; &#13; <p>He said: 鈥淚 am surprised, delighted and hugely honoured to be elected a Fellow of the Royal Society. This has involved horizon scanning to identify future issues to reduce the surprises of future developments. His main work has been the industrial-scale collation of evidence to determine which interventions are effective and which are not and then establishing processes for embedding evidence in decision making. In particular, he showed how the placenta is established in a protective low-oxygen environment, stimulating its own development through interactions with the uterus. He demonstrated that aberrations in the early stages of placental development can adversely affect the life-long health of mother and offspring. Burton was founding Director of the Centre for Trophoblast Research, and founding Chair of the Strategic Research Initiative Cambridge Reproduction.</p> <p>He said: 鈥淚 am delighted to receive this recognition for myself and the field of reproductive biology, and thank colleagues and collaborators for their contributions over the years.鈥</p> <p><strong>Professor Roberto Cipolla FREng FRS</strong></p> <p><em>Professor of Information Engineering, Department of Engineering, 探花直播 of Cambridge</em></p> <p>Cipolla is distinguished for his research in computer vision and his contributions to the reconstruction, registration and recognition of three-dimensional objects from images. These include novel algorithms for the recovery of accurate 3D shape, visual localisation and semantic segmentation and their translation into commercial products.</p> <p>He said: "This is the ultimate honour for any scientist and recognises the amazing contribution of my students, collaborators and mentors in my 30 years at Cambridge. I am also very fortunate to be working in the field of computer vision and machine learning at a time of revolutionary progress and ground-breaking applications.鈥</p> <p><strong>Professor Douglas Easton FMedSci FRS</strong></p> <p><em>Professor of Genetic Epidemiology, Centre for Cancer Genetic Epidemiology, Department of Public Health and Primary Care, 探花直播 of Cambridge</em></p> <p>Easton鈥檚 main research interests are in cancer genetics. He analyses large population studies to identify genetic variants that predispose to cancer, and to understand how they combine together with other factors to determine cancer risk. His work has characterised many important cancer genes such as BRCA1 and BRCA2, and identified of hundreds of common cancer predisposition variants in the non-coding genome. He co-developed the BOADICEA risk prediction model now used worldwide to guide genetic counselling and cancer prevention.</p> <p>He said: "I am truly delighted and honoured to be elected to the Fellowship of the Royal Society. To address this question, he has studied the brain, an organ notorious for its poor regenerative capacity. Working with many excellent colleagues, he has described how stem cells in the adult brain regenerate oligodendrocytes - the cells responsible for making the insulating myelin sheath around nerve fibres - once they are lost in diseases such as multiple sclerosis (MS); how this process declines with age; and it can be reversed. 探花直播work has led to two regenerative medicine trials in MS.</p> <p>He said: 鈥淚 am absolutely delighted to have been elected a Fellow of the Royal Society - it is a huge honour.鈥</p> <p><strong>Professor Richard Gilbertson FMedSci FRS</strong></p> <p><em>Li Ka Shing Chair of Oncology and Head of Department of Oncology, 探花直播 of Cambridge, Director of Cancer Research UK Cambridge Centre and Senior Group Leader, Cancer Research UK Cambridge Institute</em></p> <p>Gilbertson, a paediatric physician-scientist, has identified the origins of common and aggressive childhood brain tumours and many of the genetic alterations that drive these tumours. Even those of us less proficient in the kitchen learn to skilfully handle an astonishing number of different objects throughout our lives, from shoelaces to tennis rackets.</p>&#13; &#13; <p>This ability to continuously acquire new skills, without forgetting or degrading old ones, comes naturally to humans but is a major challenge even for today鈥檚 most advanced artificial intelligence systems.</p>&#13; &#13; <p>Now, scientists from the 探花直播 of Cambridge and Columbia 探花直播 (USA) have developed and experimentally verified a new mathematical theory that explains how the human brain achieves this feat. Called the COntextual INference (COIN) model, it suggests that identifying the current context is key to learning how to move our bodies.</p>&#13; &#13; <p> 探花直播model describes a mechanism in the brain that is constantly trying to figure out the current context. 探花直播theory suggests that these continuously changing beliefs about context determine how to use existing memories 鈥 and whether to form new ones. 探花直播<a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-021-04129-3">results</a> are reported in the journal <em>Nature</em>.</p>&#13; &#13; <p>鈥淚magine playing tennis with a different racket than usual or switching from tennis to squash,鈥 said co-senior author Dr Daniel Wolpert from Columbia 探花直播. 鈥淥ur theory explores how your brain adjusts to these situations and whether to treat them as distinct contexts.鈥</p>&#13; &#13; <p>According to the COIN model, the brain maintains a repertoire of motor memories, each associated with the context in which it was created, such as playing squash versus tennis. Even for a single swing of the racket, the brain can draw upon many memories, each in proportion to how much the brain believes it is currently in the context in which that memory was created.聽</p>&#13; &#13; <p>This goes against the traditional view that only one memory is used at a time. To improve performance on the next swing, the brain also updates all memories, once again depending on its belief about the current context. When the context of the movement is judged to be new (the first time we play squash after years of tennis, for example), the brain automatically creates a new memory for that context. This ensures that we do not overwrite previously established memories, such as the memory for playing tennis.</p>&#13; &#13; <p>This research may lead to better physical therapy strategies to help people with injuries use their bodies again. Often the improvements seen in the setting of a physical therapist's office do not transfer to improvements in the real world.</p>&#13; &#13; <p>鈥淲ith a better understanding of how context affects motor learning, you can think about how to nudge the brain to generalise what it learns to contexts outside of the physical therapy session,鈥 said first author Dr James Heald. 鈥淎 better understanding of the basic mechanisms that underlie the context dependence of memory and learning could have therapeutic consequences in this area.鈥</p>&#13; &#13; <p>鈥淲hat I find exciting is that the principles of the COIN model may also generalise to many other forms of learning and memory, not just memories underlying our movement,鈥 said co-senior author Professor M谩t茅 Lengyel from Cambridge鈥檚 Department of Engineering. 鈥淔or example, the spontaneous recurrence of seemingly forgotten memories, often triggered by a change in our surroundings, has been observed both in motor learning and in post-traumatic stress disorder.鈥</p>&#13; &#13; <h2>COINing a new model</h2>&#13; &#13; <p>Practice with a tennis racket, and the brain forms motor memories of how you moved your arm and the rest of your body that improve your serve over time. But learning isn鈥檛 as simple as just making better memories to make movements more precise, the researchers said. Otherwise, a tennis player鈥檚 serves might improve to the point at which they never hit a ball out of bounds. 探花直播real world and our nervous systems are complex, and the brain has to deal with a lot of variability.</p>&#13; &#13; <p>How does the brain distinguish this noise 鈥 these random fluctuations 鈥 from new situations? And how does it understand that a slightly lighter tennis racket can still be operated using previous tennis racket memories? But that a table tennis paddle is an entirely different kind of object that requires starting from scratch?</p>&#13; &#13; <p> 探花直播answer, according to the COIN model, may be Bayesian inference, a mathematical technique used to deal with uncertainty. This method statistically weighs new evidence in light of prior experience in order to update one's beliefs in a changeable world. In the COIN model, a context is a simplifying assumption that, in a given set of circumstances, certain actions are more likely to lead to some consequences than others. 探花直播new theory's acceptance of the role that uncertainty plays in motor learning is similar to how quantum physics views the universe in terms of probabilities instead of certainties, the scientists noted.</p>&#13; &#13; <h2>Getting a handle on the theory</h2>&#13; &#13; <p> 探花直播researchers put the COIN model to the test on data from previous experiments, as well as new experiments, in which volunteers interacted with a robotic handle. Participants learned to manipulate the handle to reach a target while the handle pushed back in different ways.</p>&#13; &#13; <p>Volunteers who spent time learning to operate the handle as it pushed to the left, for instance, had more trouble operating the handle when it changed behaviour and pushed to the right, as compared to volunteers who started with a handle pushing to the right. 探花直播COIN model explained this effect, called anterograde interference.</p>&#13; &#13; <p>鈥 探花直播longer you learn one task, the less likely you are to move into a new context with the second task,鈥 said Wolpert. 鈥淵ou鈥檙e still forming a motor memory of the second task, but you鈥檙e not using it yet because your brain is still stuck back in the first context.鈥</p>&#13; &#13; <p> 探花直播model also predicted that a learned skill can re-emerge even after subsequent training seems to have erased it. Called spontaneous recovery, this re-emergence is seen in many other forms of learning besides motor learning. For example, spontaneous recovery has been linked with challenges in treating post-traumatic stress disorder, where contexts can trigger traumatic memories to spontaneously recur.</p>&#13; &#13; <p>Scientists usually explain spontaneous recovery by invoking two different learning mechanisms. In one, memories learned quickly are forgotten quickly, and in the other, memories learned slowly are forgotten slowly, and can thus reappear.
