Cambridge attends U7+ Alliance global summit of Universities

̽��ֱ��U7+ summit brought together 47 universities from G7 countries and beyond, who are committed to academic freedom and scholarly values and convinced of the key role of universities as global actors, to engage in discussions leading to concrete action to address pressing global challenges.

Professor Ferran was invited by U7+ Alliance organisers Sciences Po to be one of five ̽��ֱ�� presidents and representatives to carry conclusions from their discussion groups to a meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron, who sponsored the summit as part of his preparations for the G7 summit in Paris later this year.

"It was a great honour for Cambridge to be invited to summarise some very stimulating discussions on how universities can help to confront the global challenges facing us all for a leader with an important voice at the G7," Ferran said.

̽��ֱ��summit provided a unique opportunity to discuss a common agenda and establish a framework for action in today’s global landscape, resulting in a 2019 Presidential Declaration, which included a mission statement and the adoption of six agreed principles.

̽��ֱ��principles included commitments to pursue joint action through the U7+, recognition of the responsibility to train and nurture responsible and active citizens, to address environmental challenges, to combat polarisation in society, to promote interdisciplinary research, and to consolidate and share best practices worldwide.

"It was inspiring to hear from so many other ̽��ֱ�� leaders who share Cambridge's determination to tackle the great challenges that lie before us in the 21st century," Ferran said. "We can all clearly see that collaboration is vital if we are to mitigate threats to humanity such as climate change and to ensure that rapid technological change works for the benefit of society."

̽��ֱ��initial three-year agreement, signed in 2017, included the provision of matched funds by Cambridge and Sciences Po to enable academic workshops and symposia, and to pay for travel grants, short-term research visits, and visiting professorships at both Sciences Po and Cambridge.

Other bilateral activities within its scope include the encouragement of student mobility, and access for Cambridge PhD students to the Sciences Po Teaching Fellowships programme at Sciences Po's campuses in Reims, Menton or Le Havre, where lectures are done in English.

Signing on behalf of the ̽��ֱ�� of Cambridge, Vice-Chancellor Toope said: “We've committed to work together primarily at the level of PhD students to increase the number of exchanges that take place, to lengthen those exchanges, and also to provide a better framework when students from Sciences Po come to Cambridge or vice-versa, to have committees in place that will provide for those students."

Sciences Po President Mion said: “We have built a relationship of trust with Cambridge, which is now fed by years of experience and which is structured around our research programme called CamPo. We wanted to take the next step forward with this new agreement.”

Sciences Po was founded in 1872 as the École Libre des Sciences Politiques to educate the French governing class in the aftermath of the Franco-Prussian War. Today it is one of France’s leading research universities in the social sciences and humanities. It has seven campuses across France, and a record of excellent research in law, economics, history, political science and sociology.

Vice-Chancellor Stephen J Toope visited Paris on Wednesday to sign a new Memorandum of Understanding with Sciences Po President Frédéric Mion that will further strengthen collaboration at the research and doctoral levels between the two universities and renew a partnership developing research links in disciplines including politics, history and public policy.

At a ceremony held in Paris on Friday November 24th, representatives from the ̽��ֱ�� of Cambridge and from Sciences Po signed a Memorandum of Agreement to formalise and strengthen the partnership between both institutions.

̽��ֱ��stated aim of the document is to develop research links in disciplines including Politics, History and Public Policy, with a strong expectation that the collaboration will develop to encompass other areas of mutual interest.

Covering an initial three-year period, the agreement includes the provision of matched funds by Cambridge and Sciences Po to enable academic workshops and symposia, and to pay for travel grants, short-term research visits, and visiting professorships at both Sciences Po and Cambridge.

Other bilateral activities within its scope include the encouragement of student mobility, and access for Cambridge PhD students to the Sciences Po Teaching Fellowships programme at Sciences Po campuses in Reims, Menton or Le Havre, where lectures are done in English.

One specific outcome of the agreement between Cambridge and Sciences Po will be the organisation of a public conference on “ ̽��ֱ��Future of Europe”, to be held in Paris in 2018, and led by specialists in European studies from both institutions.

Signing on behalf of the ̽��ֱ�� of Cambridge, Professor Eilís Ferran, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Institutional and International Relations, said: “This Memorandum of Agreement builds on strong existing relationships between our two world-leading universities. It offers us a formal mechanism to strengthen our partnership at a time when collaboration between academic institutions is more crucial than ever before.”

Mr Frédéric Mion, President of Sciences Po, said: “There is a need to maintain and deepen cooperation among excellent academic institutions in Europe. It is the right time to continue strengthening our ties with a world-class ̽��ֱ�� such as Cambridge by developing jointly this innovative and ambitious research partnership in the social sciences. ̽��ֱ��Memorandum of Agreement is built on that firm conviction. ”
