They are among 42 highly distinguished UK academics from 18 universities welcomed as Fellows by the Academy, taking the total number of living Fellows to over one thousand for the first time.

̽��ֱ��Fellows elected from the ̽��ֱ�� of Cambridge are:

Professor Cyprian Broodbank – John Disney Professor of Archaeology, Director of the McDonald Institute for Archaeological Research and Fellow of Gonville & Caius College.

Professor Garth Fowden – Sultan Qaboos Professor of Abrahamic Faiths and Senior Research Associate at Peterhouse.

Professor Robert Gordon – Serena Professor of Italian and Fellow of Gonville & Caius College.

Professor Sanjeev Goyal – Professor of Economics and Fellow of Christ’s College.

Professor Peter Mandler – Professor of Modern Cultural History and Bailey Lecturer in History at Gonville & Caius College.

Professor Joachim Whaley – Professor of German History and Thought and Fellow of Gonville & Caius College.

Also receiving a fellowship is Professor Michael Mann, Honorary Professor at the ̽��ֱ�� of Cambridge and Distinguished Professor of Sociology at the ̽��ֱ�� of California, Los Angeles.

Elected from across the UK and world for their distinction in the humanities and social sciences, they represent an unrivalled resource of expertise and knowledge.

Major Gift for Cambridge Economics research

Bill and Weslie Janeway have agreed to donate $27 million (£17.5 million) to the Faculty of Economics, part of which will create a new Fellowship at Pembroke College..

̽��ֱ��proposal, which will go for approval by the Regent House, the ̽��ֱ��’s governing body, later this month, is to establish the Janeway Professorship of Financial Economics within the Faculty, with a linked Fellowship at the College, and to establish the Janeway Fund for Economics.

̽��ֱ��Fund will provide support in perpetuity to an Institute for fundamental research in economics. This Institute will provide funding for postdoctoral fellows, doctoral and research students, visitors and international conferences.

Cambridge economists have made substantial contributions to the subject over the last two hundred years. Distinguished figures include Thomas Malthus, Alfred Marshall, John Maynard Keynes, Frank Ramsay, Richard Stone, James Meade, Amartya Sen and James Mirrlees.

Professor Sir Leszek Borysiewicz, the Vice-Chancellor, said: “This transformative gift will help Cambridge maintain its world-class position as well as its distinguished heritage in economics.”

Bill Janeway said: ”Our gift celebrates and extends Cambridge’s renewed leadership in new economic thinking and, especially, supports the reunion of the disciplines of economics and finance.”

Professor Sanjeev Goyal, Chairman of the Faculty of Economics, said: "This generous gift from Bill and Weslie Janeway will allow us to push the boundaries of teaching and research as a world leading centre in economics.”

̽��ֱ��Master of Pembroke College, Sir Richard Dearlove, said: “Pembroke is very grateful to Bill and Weslie Janeway for establishing this Fellowship in Economics in the College to encourage both research and teaching. It will greatly strengthen our commitment to the subject.”

Bill Janeway has been an active venture capital investor for more than 40 years. During that time he built and led the Warburg Pincus Technology Investment team that provided financial backing to a series of companies making critical contributions to the internet economy, including BEA Systems, Veritas Software and, more recently, Nuance Communications, the speech recognition company. He remains actively engaged as a Senior Advisor and Managing Director at Warburg Pincus.

Janeway received a Ph.D in Economics from Cambridge ̽��ֱ�� where he was a Marshall Scholar at Pembroke College. His doctoral study on the formulation of economic policy following the Great Crash of 1929 was supervised by Keynes' leading student, Richard Kahn (author of the foundational paper on "the multiplier."). With his wife, Weslie, Janeway went on to found the Cambridge Endowment for Research in Finance. Currently he serves as a Visiting Scholar in the Economics Faculty of Cambridge ̽��ֱ��.

Janeway is a director of Magnet Systems, Nuance Communications, O'Reilly Media and a member of the Board of Managers of Roubini Global Economics. He is a member of the board of directors of the Social Science Research Council, and a co-founder and member of the Governing Board of the Institute for New Economic Thinking (INET). He is the author of Doing Capitalism in the Innovation Economy: Markets, Speculation and the State, published by Cambridge ̽��ֱ�� Press in 2012.

Weslie Janeway has an extensive background in philanthropy, frequently with an emphasis in science. She is president of the Pyewacket Foundation, which supports young investigators in the natural and social sciences as well as community and cultural organizations in New York City. She is currently vice chair of ̽��ֱ��Jackson Laboratory, and served for six years as Chair of the Nominating and Governance Committee. She is also a member of the Board of Trustees of Rockefeller ̽��ֱ�� and the Board of Managers of the New York Botanical Garden, where she serves on the science committee. She is an honorary member at Robinson College at Cambridge and a Companion of the ̽��ֱ�� of ̽��ֱ��Cambridge Guild of Benefactors.

Ms. Janeway holds a bachelor’s degree in government from Barnard College and a master’s in politics from Brown ̽��ֱ��. When she and her husband moved to England in 2006, Ms. Janeway studied genetics at the ̽��ֱ�� of Cambridge and she joined the lab of Roger Pederson, a stem cell scientist. During the academic year, Ms. Janeway lives in Cambridge, where she is a sabbatical visitor in the Laboratory for Regenerative Medicine, working with Mark Kotter, a neurosurgeon focused on adult central nervous system stem cells and their precursors. When in New York, she volunteers in Frederick P. Rose Professor Mary E. Hatten’s Laboratory of Developmental Neurobiology making the vectors used to transfer genetic material.

She also coauthored the 2008 cookbook Mrs. Charles Darwin’s Recipe Book based on Emma Darwin’s personal notebook found in the Cambridge ̽��ֱ�� library.

American husband and wife philanthropists are to make a multi-million pound gift to the ̽��ֱ�� of Cambridge to enhance the teaching and research of its prestigious Economics Faculty.

Global economic institute creates partnership with Cambridge economists

Economists at the ̽��ֱ�� of Cambridge have joined forces with the New York-based Institute for New Economic Thinking (INET) to advance innovative approaches to understanding how our economy and the associated financial system really work.

In the context of financial contagion, persistent unemployment, rising inequality and intense pressure on government budgets, economists around the world recognize that conventional doctrines and models need to be reassessed. .

INET was created to facilitate this critical enquiry and broaden and accelerate the development of economic thinking that can lead to solutions for the great challenges of the 21st century.

̽��ֱ��Cambridge-INET Institute is being set up through a $ 3.75 million grant from the INET that has been matched 1:1 with funding from ̽��ֱ��Keynes Fund for Applied Economics, Mohammed El Erian, the Cambridge Endowment for Research in Finance, ̽��ֱ��Isaac Newton Trust and the Faculty of Economics..

Inaugural Director of Cambridge-INET, Professor Sanjeev Goyal, said: “Our Faculty members are at the forefront of new economic thinking about individual behaviour, the networks that shape economic exchange, the econometric analysis of financial markets, and the transmission mechanisms which relate the financial sector to the rest of the economy.”

He added: “ ̽��ֱ��support which went into the setting up of the institute – from INET itself and other matched funding – is recognition of the quality and importance of our research. It will help us to consolidate further the status of the Faculty as a leading centre for fundamental research in economics.”

̽��ֱ��Cambridge-INET will support doctoral research through PhD studentships, appoint a number of post-doctoral fellowships every year, host leading international economists, sponsor major conferences and provide seed funding for cutting-edge research projects.

̽��ֱ��Institute has four themes of research:

Networks, crowds and markets: Facebook, Twitter, the World Wide Web, airline routing, British Rail and inter-bank loans are example of networks. What are the incentives to create and dissolve links? How do these networks shape economic performance? This theme is coordinated by Prof. Sanjeev Goyal.
Transmission mechanisms and economic policy: There has been increasing interest in the study of the role of financial frictions and distortions in shaping the transmission of shocks and policies, and determining the level of demand and economic activity both within and across borders. This theme is coordinated by Prof. Giancarlo Corsetti (who is also Deputy Director of the Institute).
Information, uncertainty and incentives: Economic phenomena arise out individual decisions. The research aims to deepen our understanding of risk-sharing, herding and crises in financial markets, and the incentives and efficiency of auctions and matching mechanisms. This theme is coordinated by Prof. Hamid Sabourian.
Empirical Analysis of Financial Markets: Financial markets serve the important function of transferring risk across individuals and over time, and they provide information on the performance of firms and economies. So their effective performance is of great interest to policymakers, pension holders, and consumers, yet recent events have created profound mistrust about their operation. This theme is coordinated by Prof. Oliver Linton.
