̽��ֱ��QEPrize is the world’s most prestigious engineering prize, celebrating the engineers responsible for ground-breaking innovations in engineering that have been of global benefit to humanity.

̽��ֱ��prize aims to raise the public profile of engineering and inspire young people to take up the engineering challenges of the future.

Professor Gladden, who is currently Executive Chair of the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), said:

“I am honoured to be asked to Chair the QEPrize judging panel of internationally distinguished engineers.

“It is tremendously stimulating to work with some of the leading engineers of our generation to select winning innovations from among so many excellent nominations.

In addition to her role as EPSRC Executive Chair, Professor Gladden is Shell Professor of Chemical Engineering at the ̽��ֱ�� of Cambridge.

She is a Fellow of both the Royal Academy of Engineering and the Royal Society and a foreign member of the US National Academy of Engineering.

Professor Gladden is internationally recognised for her work on advancing magnetic resonance imaging techniques, originally developed for use in the medical environment.

She has used them in engineering research to gain a greater understanding of the physical and chemical phenomena that determine the performance of chemical processes and their resulting products.

Lord Browne of Madingley, Chairman of the Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering Foundation, said: “I am delighted that Dame Lynn has accepted our invitation to lead the Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering judging panel as we embark on an exciting new phase for the Prize.

“She is one of the world’s preeminent engineers, and has served on the panel with distinction since the inception of the Prize. We look forward to working with Lynn as Chair of the judging panel.”

Professor Gladden is currently Shell Professor of Chemical Engineering at the ̽��ֱ�� of Cambridge. She is internationally recognised for her work on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) methods which have benefited a wide array of industrial processes and contributed to a range of products and process technologies across multiple sectors.

UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) is the main mechanism that promotes the UK’s strengths in research and innovation both at home and around the world and ensures that the UK continues to make the most of its world-leading R&D sector and provide support for researchers and scientists.

EPSRC is the UK’s main funder for research across the engineering and physical sciences. It supports excellent, long-term research and high-quality postgraduate training, in order to contribute to the economic competitiveness of the UK.

Professor Gladden is Shell Professor of Chemical Engineering in Cambridge’s Department of Chemical Engineering & Biotechnology, and a Fellow of Trinity College. Her research has focused on advancing magnetic resonance imaging techniques, originally developed for use in the medical environment, and using them in engineering research to gain a greater understanding of the physical and chemical phenomena that determine the performance of chemical processes and their resulting products. In addition to her own research, Professor Gladden has held a number of research oversight roles in the UK and abroad, including Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research at Cambridge from 2010 to 2016. She is currently a Judge for the Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering.

Professor Lynn Gladden CBE, FRS, FREng has been selected to be the next Executive Chair of the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), as announced today by Science Minister Sam Gyimah. She will take up the role in October, succeeding Professor Philip Nelson who will step down at the end of September.

Landmark event for £26 million building named after physicist James Clerk Maxwell

Pioneering “blue skies” research is a step closer to having a home after a topping out ceremony was held at a centrepiece building on the West Cambridge site.

̽��ֱ��new facilities will see research scientists from industry occupying laboratory and desk space alongside Cambridge research groups, with the aim of creating a two-way flow of ideas and exposing the best early career researchers to scientific problem-solving that relates directly to industrial need.

Once completed the Maxwell Centre will offer laboratory and meeting spaces for more than 230 people.

Professor Andy Parker, Head of Department at the Cavendish Laboratory, said: “We aim for world-leading excellence in teaching and research in Cambridge. This requires the best facilities and the Maxwell Centre will enable a pioneering way for industry and academia to work together in partnership.”

̽��ֱ��Maxwell Centre will build on the research activity currently supported by the Winton Programme for the Physics of Sustainability at Cambridge’s Cavendish Laboratory, where the focus has been on original, risk-taking science since its inception in March 2011, emphasising fundamental physics research relevant to areas such as renewable energy.

Pioneering research from the Winton programme, including the new physics of materials that could harness superconductivity to revolutionise battery life, will be able to flourish at the centre.

Many other aspects of fundamental physics will be fostered, including advanced scientific computing, the theory of condensed matter, advanced materials and the physics of biology and medicine.

Professor Parker added that the building work was on schedule and on cost despite adverse weather conditions during its construction and said: “I can see the building rising from my office window. I have been very impressed by the hard work and professionalism of the team, both on-site and at the project meetings which I have attended. I would also like to thank the Cavendish team who have been helping to deliver the project.”

̽��ֱ��Centre is named to commemorate physicist James Clerk Maxwell, who was appointed the first Professor of Experimental Physics at Cambridge in 1871 and who discovered electromagnetism and founded statistical mechanics.

Traditionally topping out ceremonies mark the point at which the final beam (or its equivalent) has been placed atop a building. Elements of construction remain to be carried out at the Centre, which is located between the Physics of Medicine building and the William Gates building on the West Cambridge site. It is due to open its doors in late 2015.

Among those present at the ceremony were Professor Lynn Gladden, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research, and Francis Shiner, Managing Director of SDC Builders Ltd, the construction contractor carrying out the work on behalf of the ̽��ֱ��.

Cambridge and Brazil discuss possibilities for further scientific collaboration

̽��ֱ��group was led by Prof Jorge Guimarães, President of Brazil’s federal agency for the support of post-graduate education and research (CAPES), a division of the Ministry of Education; and by Prof Paulo Beirão, Director of Agricultural, Biological and Medical Sciences of Brazil’s national research council (CNPq), part of the Ministry for Science, Technology and Innovation.

Supported by CAPES, by the Brazilian embassy in London, and by the UK embassy in Brazil, the event sought to identify opportunities for Cambridge-Brazil research collaboration in biological sciences, medical sciences, and physical sciences and technology.

Welcoming the Brazilian delegates and over sixty Cambridge attendees at Clare College’s Gillespie Centre, Prof Lynn Gladden, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research, emphasised the ̽��ֱ��’s interest in pursuing collaborative opportunities with the world’s best researchers in strategic fields of knowledge. She welcomed the chance to explore ways of supporting the growing number of links established by Cambridge academics with their Brazilian counterparts.

Prof Guimarães told the audience that CAPES takes very seriously the opportunity of fostering collaboration with Cambridge–as shown by the fact that most of the Brazilian academics invited to join the delegation were full members of the Brazilian Academy of Science, one of the highest forms of scientific distinction.

Representing the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI), Prof Beirão reminded the audience that, although science is relatively young in the country, Brazil has been catching up fast by investing significantly in its science base, and has already attained world excellence in certain fields of knowledge –represented by the National Institutes for Science and Technology (INCTs), which CNPq supports. A closer research relationship with a world-leading university like Cambridge would, he hoped, bring benefits to all.

Following the opening remarks, simultaneous breakout sessions were held during which panellists from Cambridge and Brazil offered overviews of their research interests and suggested possible areas for further collaboration.

̽��ֱ��session on Biological Sciences included presentations by Prof Geoffrey Smith, Head of Department of Pathology; Dr John Carr, Senior Lecturer in Plant Sciences; Prof Steve Oliver, Director of the Systems Biology Centre; and Dr David Sargan, from the Department of Veterinary Medicine. Their Brazilian counterparts were Prof Ricardo Gazinnelli, of the Federal ̽��ֱ�� of Minas Gerais (UFMG), and coordinator of the INCT for Vaccines; Prof Mauro Martins Teixeira, also of UFMG, and coordinator of the INCT for Dengue; and Prof Maria de Fatima Grossi de Sá, plant biotechnology researcher at Brazil’s national agricultural agency, EMBRAPA.

Physical Sciences and Technology were represented by Prof Lindsay Greer, Head of Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy; Prof Jeremy Baumberg, Director of the Nanophotonics Centre; Prof Simone Hochgreb, Professor of Experimental combustion at the Department of Engineering; Prof Richard McMahon, of the Institute of Astronomy; and Dr Sophie Jackson, Reader in Biophysical Chemistry. They shared the panel with Prof Carlos Aragão, Director of the Brazilian Center for Research in Energy and Materials (CNPEM); Prof Luiz Davidovich, quantum physicist at the Federal ̽��ֱ�� of Rio de Janeiro; Prof Alvaro T. Prata, mechanical engineer at the Federal ̽��ֱ�� of Santa Catarina and currently Secretary for Technological Development and Innovation at the MCTI; and Prof Virgilio Almeida, computer scientist at UFMG and Secretary for Information Technology Policy at the MCTI.

̽��ֱ��session on medical sciences involved Prof Christopher Rudd, from the Division of Immunology, Department of Pathology; Dr Kenneth Seamon, Development Director for Science at the Cambridge Cancer Centre; and Dr Thais Minnet, Senior Research Associate, Institute of Public Health. They discussed potential areas for collaborative work with Prof Jorge Kalil, Director of the Immunology laboratory at São Paulo’s InCor hospital; Prof Guilherme Kurtz, Head of Pharmacology at Brazil’s National Cancer Institute; and Prof Kleber Gomes Franchini, Director of the National Laboratory for Biosciences (LNBio), in Campinas.

̽��ֱ��breakout sessions and closing remarks were followed by a buffet lunch, during which attendees were able to discuss their research interests with the Brazilian delegates.

As immediate follow-up to the event, the International Strategy Office and Research Strategy Office are collecting and collating feedback from panellists and attendees. ̽��ֱ��purpose is to create a list of research themes and modes of engagement that Cambridge researchers would find most useful as they seek to establish or deepen research links to Brazilian scientists.

After comparing priorities and interests, CAPES and Cambridge will identify areas of research that CAPES is likely to support through the provision of funding for researcher mobility and for the organisation of thematic workshops. This initial form of support, it is hoped, will allow collaborators in Cambridge and Brazil to tap other sources of funding for joint research projects.

In today’s climate of cut-backs and austerity measures, opportunities to increase efficiency and reduce costs are sought after. With this in mind, a new resource launched today by the ̽��ֱ�� of Cambridge aims to improve research management by making greater use of existing equipment and facilities, and by sharing these between universities wherever possible.

̽��ֱ��online Research Facilities and Equipment Database will help academics access information about facilities, equipment and research services across the ̽��ֱ�� of Cambridge. Moreover, as the database expands, researchers will be able to look for and use equipment across five partner universities in the project – Cambridge, Imperial College, ̽��ֱ�� College London, and the Universities of Oxford and Southampton.

̽��ֱ��initiative is part of a drive by the Research Councils UK to increase the effectiveness of equipment use. Since May 2011, universities have been required to check with other peer institutions to see if there is an opportunity to share equipment prior to submission of grant applications. ̽��ֱ��database will facilitate this process and help researchers make a stronger case for new research facilities and equipment in grant applications.

Led by the ̽��ֱ�� of Cambridge’s Research Office and funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, the Equipment Project has already amassed information on over 300 high-value research facilities and equipment, including Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectrometers, a Genome Sequencer FLX Instrument, Deep Reactive-Ion Etching systems and confocal laser scanning microscopes.

Importantly, the database neither monitors nor controls access to these facilities and equipment, with access remaining at the equipment owner’s discretion. However, each record in the searchable database includes contact information and, as a further time-saving measure, an indication of the level of its current usage ranging from ‘very low’ to ‘fully-utilised’.

Professor Lynn Gladden, the Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research commented: ‘ ̽��ֱ��Equipment Project has been an excellent example of research-intensive southern universities working together to pool resources at a time of significant funding constraints. We hope that this will be a useful tool for our researchers for many years to come. Sharing research equipment is not a simple matter, nor is it always feasible and it certainly requires trust between the different researchers involved.

“Yet, allowing others access to equipment has, in the past, helped to strengthen burgeoning research collaborations and, occasionally, even led to serendipitous collaborative research findings. With budgetary constraints likely to continue, tools such as these are invaluable if we are to support our world-class researchers accomplish their intellectual endeavours with the best resources available.”

Cambridge Language Sciences launched

Around 20 different departments and affiliated research bodies were represented at the event, which was designed to promote awareness of the Language Sciences Initiative and to encourage the active participation of the research community in setting the agenda.

After a welcome given by Dr Henriëtte Hendriks of the Department of Theoretical and Applied Linguistics, Professor Lynn Gladden, Pro-Vice Chancellor for Research, and Professor Simon Franklin, Head of the School of Arts and Humanities, a packed day included presentations organised around each of the Initiative’s five current interdisciplinary research themes: Language Communication and Comprehension, Language Learning across the Lifespan, Human Language Technologies, Cambridge English, and Language Change and Diversity.

Presentations from the conference will be posted on the new language sciences website later this week. ̽��ֱ��site also has a Research Directory and more information about the Initiative and its research themes.

Jane Walsh, Coordinator for the Language Sciences Initiative, said “ ̽��ֱ��excitement generated by the conference is very encouraging, but the big challenge will be to build on that initial enthusiasm. I’m in the process of collating all the feedback we received, which is very helpful. One of the ideas which we would like to act on as a priority is to work with graduate students to plan some networking events for early career researchers at the start of the next academic year.
