This requires the best facilities and the Maxwell Centre will enable a pioneering way for industry and academia to work together in partnership.鈥</p> <p> 探花直播Maxwell Centre will build on the research activity currently supported by the Winton Programme for the Physics of Sustainability at Cambridge鈥檚 Cavendish Laboratory, where the focus has been on original, risk-taking science since its inception in March 2011, emphasising fundamental physics research relevant to areas such as renewable energy.</p> <p>Pioneering research from the Winton programme, including the new physics of materials that could harness superconductivity to revolutionise battery life, will be able to flourish at the centre.</p> <p>Many other aspects of fundamental physics will be fostered, including advanced scientific computing, the theory of condensed matter, advanced materials and the physics of biology and medicine.</p> <p>Professor Parker added that the building work was on schedule and on cost despite adverse weather conditions during its construction and said: 鈥淚 can see the building rising from my office window. I have been very impressed by the hard work and professionalism of the team, both on-site and at the project meetings which I have attended. I would also like to thank the Cavendish team who have been helping to deliver the project.鈥</p> <p> 探花直播Centre is named to commemorate physicist James Clerk Maxwell, who was appointed the first Professor of Experimental Physics at Cambridge in 1871 and who discovered electromagnetism and founded statistical mechanics.</p> <p>Traditionally topping out ceremonies mark the point at which the final beam (or its equivalent) has been placed atop a building. Elements of construction remain to be carried out at the Centre, which is located between the Physics of Medicine building and the William Gates building on the West Cambridge site. She welcomed the chance to explore ways of supporting the growing number of links established by Cambridge academics with their Brazilian counterparts.</p> <p>Prof Guimar茫es told the audience that CAPES takes very seriously the opportunity of fostering collaboration with Cambridge鈥揳s shown by the fact that most of the Brazilian academics invited to join the delegation were full members of the Brazilian Academy of Science, one of the highest forms of scientific distinction.</p> <p>Representing the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI), Prof Beir茫o reminded the audience that, although science is relatively young in the country, Brazil has been catching up fast by investing significantly in its science base, and has already attained world excellence in certain fields of knowledge 鈥搑epresented by the National Institutes for Science and Technology (INCTs), which CNPq supports. A closer research relationship with a world-leading university like Cambridge would, he hoped, bring benefits to all.</p> <p>Following the opening remarks, simultaneous breakout sessions were held during which panellists from Cambridge and Brazil offered overviews of their research interests and suggested possible areas for further collaboration.</p> <p> 探花直播session on Biological Sciences included presentations by Prof Geoffrey Smith, Head of Department of Pathology; Dr John Carr, Senior Lecturer in Plant Sciences; Prof Steve Oliver, Director of the Systems Biology Centre; and Dr David Sargan, from the Department of Veterinary Medicine. Their Brazilian counterparts were Prof Ricardo Gazinnelli, of the Federal 探花直播 of Minas Gerais (UFMG), and coordinator of the INCT for Vaccines; Prof Mauro Martins Teixeira, also of UFMG, and coordinator of the INCT for Dengue; and Prof Maria de Fatima Grossi de S谩, plant biotechnology researcher at Brazil鈥檚 national agricultural agency, EMBRAPA.</p> <p>Physical Sciences and Technology were represented by Prof Lindsay Greer, Head of Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy; Prof Jeremy Baumberg, Director of the Nanophotonics Centre; Prof Simone Hochgreb, Professor of Experimental combustion at the Department of Engineering; Prof Richard McMahon, of the Institute of Astronomy; and Dr Sophie Jackson, Reader in Biophysical Chemistry. They shared the panel with Prof Carlos Arag茫o, Director of the Brazilian Center for Research in Energy and Materials (CNPEM); Prof Luiz Davidovich, quantum physicist at the Federal 探花直播 of Rio de Janeiro; Prof Alvaro T. Prata, mechanical engineer at the Federal 探花直播 of Santa Catarina and currently Secretary for Technological Development and Innovation at the MCTI; and Prof Virgilio Almeida, computer scientist at UFMG and Secretary for Information Technology Policy at the MCTI.</p> <p> 探花直播session on medical sciences involved Prof Christopher Rudd, from the Division of Immunology, Department of Pathology; Dr Kenneth Seamon, Development Director for Science at the Cambridge Cancer Centre; and Dr Thais Minnet, Senior Research Associate, Institute of Public Health. They discussed potential areas for collaborative work with Prof Jorge Kalil, Director of the Immunology laboratory at S茫o Paulo鈥檚 InCor hospital; Prof Guilherme Kurtz, Head of Pharmacology at Brazil鈥檚 National Cancer Institute; and Prof Kleber Gomes Franchini, Director of the National Laboratory for Biosciences (LNBio), in Campinas.</p> <p> 探花直播breakout sessions and closing remarks were followed by a buffet lunch, during which attendees were able to discuss their research interests with the Brazilian delegates.</p> <p>As immediate follow-up to the event, the International Strategy Office and Research Strategy Office are collecting and collating feedback from panellists and attendees. 探花直播purpose is to create a list of research themes and modes of engagement that Cambridge researchers would find most useful as they seek to establish or deepen research links to Brazilian scientists.</p> <p>After comparing priorities and interests, CAPES and Cambridge will identify areas of research that CAPES is likely to support through the provision of funding for researcher mobility and for the organisation of thematic workshops. With this in mind, a new resource launched today by the 探花直播 of Cambridge aims to improve research management by making greater use of existing equipment and facilities, and by sharing these between universities wherever possible.</p>&#13; <p> 探花直播online <a href="https://www.equipment.admin.cam.ac.uk/">Research Facilities and Equipment Database</a> will help academics access information about facilities, equipment and research services across the 探花直播 of Cambridge. Moreover, as the database expands, researchers will be able to look for and use equipment across five partner universities in the project 鈥 Cambridge, Imperial College, 探花直播 College London, and the Universities of Oxford and Southampton.</p>&#13; <p> 探花直播initiative is part of a drive by the Research Councils UK to increase the effectiveness of equipment use. Since May 2011, universities have been required to check with other peer institutions to see if there is an opportunity to share equipment prior to submission of grant applications. 探花直播database will facilitate this process and help researchers make a stronger case for new research facilities and equipment in grant applications.</p>&#13; <p>Led by the 探花直播 of Cambridge鈥檚 Research Office and funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, the Equipment Project has already amassed information on over 300 high-value research facilities and equipment, including Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectrometers, a Genome Sequencer FLX Instrument, Deep Reactive-Ion Etching systems and confocal laser scanning microscopes.</p>&#13; <p>Importantly, the database neither monitors nor controls access to these facilities and equipment, with access remaining at the equipment owner鈥檚 discretion. However, each record in the searchable database includes contact information and, as a further time-saving measure, an indication of the level of its current usage ranging from 鈥榲ery low鈥 to 鈥榝ully-utilised鈥.</p>&#13; <p>Professor Lynn Gladden, the Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research commented: 鈥 探花直播Equipment Project has been an excellent example of research-intensive southern universities working together to pool resources at a time of significant funding constraints. We hope that this will be a useful tool for our researchers for many years to come. Sharing research equipment is not a simple matter, nor is it always feasible and it certainly requires trust between the different researchers involved.</p>&#13; <p>鈥淵et, allowing others access to equipment has, in the past, helped to strengthen burgeoning research collaborations and, occasionally, even led to serendipitous collaborative research findings.
