Cambridge one of six NHS brain cancer centres to be awarded excellence status by the Tessa Jowell Brain Cancer Mission

This award recognises centres for excellence in treatment, research and care.

探花直播initiative is part of the TJBCM鈥檚 mission to ensure every patient has access to excellent care, no matter where they live. Including these six new centres, there are now 17 Tessa Jowell Centres of Excellence across the UK.

With 12,000 people diagnosed with a brain tumour every year in the UK, there has never been a more important time to recognise the efforts of NHS staff committed to developing and improving brain tumour treatment and care.

Stephen Price, Consultant Neurosurgeon at Addenbrooke鈥檚 and Clinician Scientist at the 探花直播 of Cambridge, said: 鈥淲e are delighted to be designated as a Tessa Jowell Centre of Excellence as it means that brain tumour patients can be confident they are receiving the highest level of NHS care and have access to the most up to date treatments.

To be considered for this award, centres implemented specific feedback from the Mission and made a range of service improvements over a period of 18 months.

探花直播East of England service was recognised for its commitment to equality of access for patients across the region, with the Cambridge 探花直播 Hospitals, Norfolk and Norwich 探花直播 Hospital and Ipswich Hospital teams working closely together to ensure excellence in treatment and care for all patients no matter where in the region they lived.

探花直播committee commended the Addenbrooke鈥檚 hospital team for their impressive efforts to further improve their rehabilitation services and the innovative Minderoo Precision Brain Tumour Programme.

Nicola Day, clinical specialist physiotherapist in oncological rehabilitation and exercise at CUH, contributed to the submission and said: 鈥淏ecoming a centre of excellence recognises the contribution of all members of the multidisciplinary team in providing the best possible care for our patients diagnosed with a brain tumour across the East of England.

"I鈥檓 delighted that our rehabilitation services have been particularly commended, which is credit to our in-patient teams alongside the success of our Addenbrooke鈥檚 Charitable Trust (ACT) funded outpatient rehabilitation programme, developed for patients undergoing cancer treatment at the hospital.鈥�

Cambridge is also leading the way in genetic testing, with patients with the most aggressive and fatal form of brain tumour, called glioblastoma, being offered a more detailed diagnosis and tailored treatment plan through rapid whole genome sequencing.

The聽Minderoo Precision Brain Tumour Programme聽is the first of its kind in the UK and is a partnership between Cambridge 探花直播 Hospitals, the Minderoo Foundation, the Tessa Jowell Brain Cancer Mission, NHS East Genomics Laboratory Hub, Cancer Research UK Cambridge Centre at the 探花直播 of Cambridge and Illumina.

鈥� 探花直播new Centre of Excellence status recognises the research strengths at Cambridge where the newly funded CRUK Brain Cancer Virtual Institute at the CRUK Cambridge Centre and the integrated Minderoo Precision Brain Tumour Programme are bringing together clinicians and researchers to tackle this cancer of unmet need,鈥� added Stephen Price, who also co-leads our聽CRUK Brain Cancer Virtual Institute.

鈥淥ur staff will now have access to the Tessa Jowell Academy for training and sharing best practice across other Centres of Excellence enabling us to continue to improve clinical care and community support services for people living with a brain tumour across the whole of East Anglia.

"As a Centre of Excellence we will also have new funding opportunities for research to better understand and treat brain tumours.鈥�

All six centres will continue to share their expertise with staff in other centres through the Tessa Jowell Academy, the Mission鈥檚 national learning and networking platform. This will ensure that multidisciplinary teams continue to connect with peer centres across the country and learn from each other鈥檚 excellence to support service improvement nationally.

Jess Mills, Tessa Jowell鈥檚 daughter and TJBCM鈥檚 Special Adviser said: 鈥淲e are one step closer to achieving this incredible ambition of excellence for all. 探花直播reason we are moving forward at this fast pace is due to the combined efforts and commitment of the doctors, nurses and support staff in each of the hospitals.鈥�

It is hoped that for the 88,000 British people currently living with a brain tumour, the excellence status provides reassurance about the availability of excellent care and commitment to improvement in the NHS across the UK.

Offering precision cancer treatment is a key aim of the planned new Cambridge Cancer Research Hospital, bringing together clinical expertise from Addenbrooke's with cutting-edge research from the Cancer Research UK Cambridge Centre and 探花直播 of Cambridge.

探花直播new specialist cancer hospital will combine modern NHS clinical space with three new research institutes dedicated to fulfilling the ambitions set out in the government's Life Science Strategy and the NHS Long Term Plan.

This unique facility will change the story of cancer for patients 鈥� in this region, nationally and globally 鈥� by detecting cancer earlier, diagnosing it more accurately, and treating it more precisely.

Brain tumours and brain injury to be focus of new Cambridge laboratories

探花直播John Pickard Neurosurgical Laboratories, based at Addenbrooke鈥檚 Hospital, Cambridge 探花直播 Hospitals, will contain purpose built modern laboratories and updated offices, and are named after John Pickard, Professor Emeritus of Neurosurgery. Pickard was Cambridge鈥檚 first Professor of Neurosurgery, who was in post from 1991 until his retirement in 2013. 探花直播suite consists of laboratories dedicated to neurochemistry, and imaging and treating brain tumours.

鈥淚njuries to the brain, either through trauma or diseases such as brain tumours, can have serious lasting effects on individuals, as well as for their families and carers,鈥� says Professor Peter Hutchinson, Head of Academic Neurosurgery at the 探花直播 of Cambridge. 鈥淥ur newly refurbished laboratories will help us to better understand what is happening in response to this damage, putting us in a better position to treat the patients and improve their long-term outcomes.鈥�

探花直播Neurochemistry Laboratory, led by Dr Keri Carpenter, aims to develop better ways of monitoring and treating brain injury by investigating how the brain responds to injury and how these responses can lead to long-term disabilities. Better treatments are needed to ensure the best outcome for each patient, and alleviate demands on carers, local authorities and NHS resources. 探花直播findings are potentially also relevant to diseases such as dementia and Parkinson鈥檚, which often manifest at a younger age in brain injury survivors.

探花直播laboratories will be the leading unit in the UK to use microdialysis, which enables doctors to deliver molecules to and from the injured brain. This technology can be used to monitor, study and potentially treat specific areas of the brain. Researchers at the 探花直播 have pioneered the use of non-radioactive 鈥榣abels鈥� administered by microdialysis to track metabolism. Microdialysis is also used to support clinical trials of drugs given intravenously to establish how effectively the drug is able to cross the 鈥榖lood-brain barrier鈥�, transiting from the bloodstream into the brain.

Researchers from the laboratories will work in collaboration with colleagues at the newly-refurbished Wolfson Brain Imaging Centre in the development of advanced imaging techniques, as well as with colleagues in departments such as Chemistry, Clinical Neurosciences and聽Medicine, and across the Cambridge Biomedical Campus.

探花直播Brain Tumour Imaging Laboratory will be the UK鈥檚 first dedicated laboratory for analysing medical imaging of patients with brain tumours. It will use advanced imaging that can be performed on clinical scanners to understand disease-related changes in and around brain tumours 鈥� including how far these tumours spread, the effect and impact this spread has on the normal brain, and how treatments such as surgery and radiotherapy affect normal brain function. 探花直播laboratory will be led by Mr Stephen Price.

探花直播Lisa Wiles Neurooncology Laboratory 鈥� named after a patient treated at Addenbrooke鈥檚鈥� will also be the first of its kind in the UK, and will be integrated with the operating rooms to collect and process tissue samples taken directly from cancer patients being operated on. Led by Mr Colin Watts, the team will use this new facility as a resource available to the whole of the Cambridge Cancer Centre community to support world-class research to improve our understanding of brain cancer and develop new therapies. This should enable faster, more precise diagnoses to improve the treatment of patients 鈥� including tailoring treatment to each individual patient.

Professor John Pickard was the first chairman and clinical director of the Wolfson Brain Imaging Centre, a leading biomedical imaging centre housing both MRI and PET scanners. More recently he became the first Cambridge Health Technology Co-operative Honorary Director, which is one of eight national co-operatives that receive funding from the National Institute for Health Research. 探花直播Cambridge co-operative is the only one to focus on brain injury.

A new suite of laboratories aimed at improving outcomes for patients with brain injuries and brain tumours opens today at the 探花直播 of Cambridge.
