Nine of these are from the 探花直播 of Cambridge.</p> <p>Sir Adrian Smith, President of the Royal Society said: 鈥淚 am pleased to welcome such an outstanding group into the Fellowship of the Royal Society.</p> <p>鈥淭his new cohort have already made significant contributions to our understanding of the world around us and continue to push the boundaries of possibility in academic research and industry.</p> <p>鈥淔rom visualising the sharp rise in global temperatures since the industrial revolution to leading the response to the Covid-19 pandemic, their diverse range of expertise is furthering human understanding and helping to address some of our greatest challenges. It is an honour to have them join the Fellowship.鈥</p> <p> 探花直播Fellows and Foreign Members join the ranks of Stephen Hawking, Isaac Newton, Charles Darwin, Albert Einstein, Lise Meitner, Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar and Dorothy Hodgkin.</p> <p> 探花直播new Cambridge fellows are:聽<br /> 聽</p> <h3><strong>Professor Sir John Aston Kt FRS</strong></h3> <p>Aston is the Harding Professor of Statistics in Public Life at the Statistical Laboratory, Department of Pure Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics, where he develops techniques for public policy and improves the use of quantitative methods in public policy debates.</p> <p>From 2017 to 2020 he was the Chief Scientific Adviser to the Home Office, providing statistical and scientific advice to ministers and officials, and was involved in the UK鈥檚 response to the Covid pandemic. He was knighted in 2021 for services to statistics and public policymaking, and is a Fellow of Churchill College.<br /> 聽</p> <h3><strong>Professor Sarah-Jayne Blakemore FBA FMedSci FRS</strong></h3> <p>Blakemore is the Professor of Psychology and Cognitive Neuroscience, Department of Psychology, and leader of the Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience Group. Her research focuses on the development of social cognition and decision making in the human adolescent brain, and adolescent mental health.聽</p> <p>Blakemore has been awarded several national and international prizes for her research, and is a Fellow of the British Academy, the American Association of Psychological Science and the Academy of Medical Sciences.聽<br /> 聽</p> <h3><strong>Professor Patrick Chinnery FMedSci FRS</strong></h3> <p>Chinnery is Professor of Neurology and head of the 探花直播鈥檚 Department of Clinical Neurosciences, and a Fellow of Gonville &amp; Caius College. He was appointed Executive Chair of the Medical Research Council last year, having previously been MRC Clinical Director since 2019.</p> <p>His principal research is the role of mitochondria in human disease and developing new treatments for mitochondrial disorders. Chinnery is a Wellcome Principal Research Fellow with a lab based in the MRC Mitochondrial Biology Unit and jointly chairs the NIHR BioResource for Translational Research in Common and Rare Diseases. He is a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences.</p> <h3><br /> <strong>Professor Rebecca Fitzgerald OBE FMedSci FRS</strong></h3> <p>Fitzgerald is Professor of Cancer Prevention in the Department of Oncology and the inaugural Director of the 探花直播鈥檚 new Early Cancer Institute, which launched in 2022. She is a Fellow of Trinity College.</p> <p>Her pioneering work to devise a first-in-class, non-endoscopic capsule sponge test for identifying individuals at high risk for oesophageal cancer has won numerous prizes, including the Westminster Medal, and this test is now being rolled out in the NHS and beyond by her spin-out Cyted Ltd.</p> <h3><br /> <strong>Professor David Hodell FRS</strong></h3> <p>Hodell is the Woodwardian Professor of Geology and Director of the Godwin Laboratory for Palaeoclimate Research in the Department of Earth Sciences, and a Fellow of Clare College.</p> <p>A marine geologist and paleoclimatologist, his research focuses on high-resolution paleoclimate records from marine and lake sediments, as well as mineral deposits, to better understand past climate dynamics. Hodell is a fellow of the American Geophysical Union and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.聽He has received the聽Milutin Milankovic Medal.</p> <h3><br /> <strong>Professor Eric Lauga FRS</strong></h3> <p>Lauga is Professor of Applied Mathematics in the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics, where his research is in fluid mechanics, biophysics and soft matter. Lauga is the author, or co-author, of over 180 publications and currently serves as Associate Editor for the journal Physical Review Fluids.</p> <p>He is a recipient of three awards from the American Physical Society: the Andreas Acrivos Dissertation Award in Fluid Dynamics, the Fran莽ois Frenkiel Award for Fluid Mechanics and the Early Career Award for Soft Matter Research. He is a Fellow of the American Physical Society and of Trinity College.</p> <h3><br /> <strong>Professor George Malliaras FRS</strong></h3> <p>Malliaras is the Prince Philip Professor of Technology in the Department of Engineering, where he leads a group that works on the development and translation of implantable and wearable devices that interface with electrically active tissues, with applications in neurological disorders and brain cancer.</p> <p>Research conducted by Malliaras has received awards from the European Academy of Sciences, the New York Academy of Sciences, and the US National Science Foundation among others. He is a Fellow of the Materials Research Society and of the Royal Society of Chemistry.<br /> 聽</p> <h3><strong>Professor Lloyd Peck FRI FRSB FRS</strong></h3> <p>Peck is a marine biologist at the British Antarctic Survey and a fellow at Wolfson College, Cambridge.</p> <p>He identified oxygen as a factor in polar gigantism and identified problems with protein synthesis as the cause of slow development and growth in polar marine species.聽He was awareded a Polar Medal in 2009, the PLYMSEF Silver medal in 2015 and an Erskine Fellowship at the 探花直播 of Canterbury, Christchurch in 2016-2017.聽</p> <h3><br /> <strong>Professor Oscar Randal-Williams FRS</strong></h3> <p>Randal-Williams is the Sadleirian Professor of Pure Mathematics in the Department of Pure Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics.</p> <p>He has received the Whitehead Prize from the London Mathematical Society, a Philip Leverhulme Prize, the Oberwolfach Prize, the Dannie Heineman Prize of the G枚ttingen Academy of Sciences and Humanities, and was jointly awarded the Clay Research Award.</p> <p>Randal-Williams is one of two managing editors of the Proceedings of the London Mathematical Society, and an editor of the Journal of Topology.</p> <h3><br /> <strong>Professor Mihaela van der Schaar FRS</strong></h3> <p>Van der Schaar is the John Humphrey Plummer Professor of Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence and Medicine in the Departments of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics, Engineering and Medicine.</p> <p>She is the founder and director of the Cambridge Centre for AI in Medicine, and a Fellow at 探花直播Alan Turing Institute. Her work has received numerous awards, including the Oon Prize on Preventative Medicine, a National Science Foundation CAREER Award, and the IEEE Darlington Award.</p> <p>Van der Schaar is credited as inventor on 35 US patents, and has made over 45 contributions to international standards for which she received three ISO Awards. She was the first to demonstrate how protoplanetary disc formation around low-mass young stars is determined by their radiation field. In 2017 she became the first woman to be awarded the Eddington Medal by the Royal Astronomical Society and in聽2022 she became director of the Institute of Astronomy.</p>&#13; &#13; <p>She said: 鈥淚t's a great honour to join the many Cambridge astrophysicists who have held this title. I would like to particularly pay tribute to the many junior colleagues, PhD students and postdocs聽who have聽contributed to my research.鈥</p>&#13; &#13; <p>聽聽</p>&#13; &#13; <p><strong>Professor Christopher Jiggins FRS</strong></p>&#13; &#13; <p><em>Professor of Evolutionary Biology (2014), Department of Zoology, and Fellow of St John's College</em></p>&#13; &#13; <p>Jiggins studies adaption and speciation in the <em>Lepidoptera </em>(butterflies and moths). In particular he is interested in studying how species converge due to mimicry as a model for understanding the predictability of evolution and the genetic and ecological causes of speciation. He demonstrated the importance of hybridisation and movement of genes between species in generating novel adaptations. He also works on the agricultural pest聽cotton bollworm and carries out genomic studies of the insect bioconversion species, black soldier fly.</p>&#13; &#13; <p>He said: 鈥淚 am amazed and delighted to receive this honour, and would thank all the amazing students, and postdocs that I have been lucky enough to work with over the years.鈥</p>&#13; &#13; <p>聽聽</p>&#13; &#13; <p><strong>Dr Philip Jones FRS</strong></p>&#13; &#13; <p><em>Senior Group Leader, Wellcome Sanger Institute and Professor of Cancer Development, 探花直播 of Cambridge, and Fellow of Clare College</em></p>&#13; &#13; <p>Jones studies how normal cell behaviour is altered by mutation in aging and the earliest stages of cancer development. He focuses on normal skin and oesophagus, which become a patchwork of mutant cells by middle age. He has found that different mutations can either promote or inhibit cancer development giving hope of new ways to prevent cancer in the future. He is also a Consultant in Medical Oncology at Addenbrooke鈥檚 Hospital in Cambridge.</p>&#13; &#13; <p>He said: 鈥淚 am delighted聽to be elected to the Fellowship of the Royal Society. This honour is a tribute to the dedication of my research team and collaborators and support of my mentors and scientific colleagues over many years.鈥</p>&#13; &#13; <p>聽</p>&#13; &#13; <p><strong>Dr Lori Passmore FRS</strong></p>&#13; &#13; <p><em>Group Leader, Structural Studies Division, MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology, and Fellow of Clare Hall</em></p>&#13; &#13; <p>Passmore a cryo-electron microscopist and structural biologist who works at the Medical Research Council (MRC) Laboratory of Molecular Biology and at the 探花直播 of Cambridge. She is known for her work on multiprotein complexes involved in gene expression and the development of new supports for cryo-EM studies.聽She also studies the molecular mechanisms underlying聽Fanconi anemia, a rare genetic disease resulting in an impaired response to DNA damage.</p>&#13; &#13; <p>She said: 鈥淚 am so honoured to be recognised alongside such an exceptional group of scientists. I am grateful to all the trainees, collaborators and colleagues whom I have worked with over the past years - science is truly collaborative and this is a recognition of all the courageous work of many people.鈥</p>&#13; &#13; <p>聽</p>&#13; &#13; <p><strong>Professor Peter Sewell FRS</strong></p>&#13; &#13; <p><em>Professor of Computer Science, Department of Computer Science and Technolog</em>y<em>, and Fellow of Wolfson College</em><br /><br />&#13; Sewell鈥檚 research aims to put the engineering of the real-world computer systems that we all depend on onto better foundations, developing techniques to make systems that are better-understood, more robust and more secure. He and his group are best known for their work on the subtle relaxed-memory concurrency behaviour and detailed sequential semantics of processors and programming languages. He co-leads the CHERI cybersecurity project, for which his team have established mathematically-proven security properties of Arm's Morello industrial prototype architecture.<br /><br />&#13; He said: 鈥淭his honour is a testament to the work of many excellent colleagues over the years, without whom none of this would have been possible.鈥</p>&#13; &#13; <p>聽</p>&#13; &#13; <p><strong>Professor Ivan Smith FRS</strong></p>&#13; &#13; <p><em>Professor of Geometry, Centre for Mathematical Sciences, and Fellow of Caius College</em></p>&#13; &#13; <p>Smith is a mathematician who deals with symplectic manifolds and their interaction with algebraic geometry, low-dimensional topology and dynamics. In 2007, he received the Whitehead Prize for his work in symplectic topology, highlighting the breadth of applied techniques from algebraic geometry and topology, and in 2013 the Adams Prize.聽</p>&#13; &#13; <p>He said: 鈥淚 am surprised, delighted and hugely honoured to be elected a Fellow of the Royal Society. I鈥檝e been very fortunate to work in a rapidly advancing field, learning it alongside many inspirational and generous collaborators, who should definitely share this recognition.鈥</p>&#13; &#13; <p>聽</p>&#13; &#13; <p><strong>Professor William Sutherland CBE FRS</strong></p>&#13; &#13; <p><em>Miriam Rothschild Chair of Conservation Biology, Department of Zoology聽and Professorial Fellow of聽St Catharine鈥檚 College</em></p>&#13; &#13; <p>Sutherland is a conservation scientist who is interested in improving the processes by which decisions are made. This has involved horizon scanning to identify future issues to reduce the surprises of future developments. His main work has been the industrial-scale collation of evidence to determine which interventions are effective and which are not and then establishing processes for embedding evidence in decision making. In particular, he showed how the placenta is established in a protective low-oxygen environment, stimulating its own development through interactions with the uterus. He demonstrated that aberrations in the early stages of placental development can adversely affect the life-long health of mother and offspring. Burton was founding Director of the Centre for Trophoblast Research, and founding Chair of the Strategic Research Initiative Cambridge Reproduction.</p> <p>He said: 鈥淚 am delighted to receive this recognition for myself and the field of reproductive biology, and thank colleagues and collaborators for their contributions over the years.鈥</p> <p><strong>Professor Roberto Cipolla FREng FRS</strong></p> <p><em>Professor of Information Engineering, Department of Engineering, 探花直播 of Cambridge</em></p> <p>Cipolla is distinguished for his research in computer vision and his contributions to the reconstruction, registration and recognition of three-dimensional objects from images. These include novel algorithms for the recovery of accurate 3D shape, visual localisation and semantic segmentation and their translation into commercial products.</p> <p>He said: "This is the ultimate honour for any scientist and recognises the amazing contribution of my students, collaborators and mentors in my 30 years at Cambridge. I am also very fortunate to be working in the field of computer vision and machine learning at a time of revolutionary progress and ground-breaking applications.鈥</p> <p><strong>Professor Douglas Easton FMedSci FRS</strong></p> <p><em>Professor of Genetic Epidemiology, Centre for Cancer Genetic Epidemiology, Department of Public Health and Primary Care, 探花直播 of Cambridge</em></p> <p>Easton鈥檚 main research interests are in cancer genetics. He analyses large population studies to identify genetic variants that predispose to cancer, and to understand how they combine together with other factors to determine cancer risk. His work has characterised many important cancer genes such as BRCA1 and BRCA2, and identified of hundreds of common cancer predisposition variants in the non-coding genome.
