She carried out the first systematic inactivation of all the genes in any animal, which pioneered genome-wide reverse genetic screening.</p> <p>Her research has illuminated our understanding of the processes underlying cell polarity and gene expression. This includes showing that spindle positioning is controlled by heterotrimeric G protein signalling, discovering a connection between chromatin marking and mRNA splicing, and most recently revealing mechanisms and principles of genome organisation and gene expression regulation.</p> <p>鈥淚 am honoured to be elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society,鈥 said Ahringer. 鈥淢uch of science today is done in teams, and this reflects the tremendous contributions of my past and present lab members.鈥</p> <p><strong>Professor Sadaf Farooqi聽FRCP FMedSci FRS</strong></p> <p><strong>Wellcome Principal Research Fellow and Professor of Metabolism and Medicine,聽Wellcome-MRC Institute of Metabolic Science</strong></p> <p>Professor Farooqi is distinguished for her discoveries of fundamental mechanisms that control human energy homeostasis and their disruption in obesity. Farooqi discovered that the leptin-melanocortin system regulates appetite and weight in people and聽that genetic mutations affecting this pathway cause聽severe obesity. Findings by her team have directly led to diagnostic testing for genetic obesity syndromes world-wide and enabled life-saving treatment for some people with severe obesity.</p> <p>Farooqi said: 鈥淎s a clinician scientist, I am absolutely delighted to be elected to the Fellowship of the Royal Society. This prestigious honour recognises the work of many team members past and present, our network of collaborators across the world and the patients and their families who have contributed to our research.鈥</p> <p><strong>Professor Usha Goswami CBE FBA FRS</strong></p> <p><strong>Professor of Cognitive Developmental聽Neuroscience, Department of Psychology, and Director of the Centre for聽Neuroscience in Education</strong></p> <p>Professor Goswami has pioneered the application of neuroscience to education. Her research investigates the sensory and neural basis of childhood disorders of language and literacy, which are heritable and found across languages. Goswami's research shows a shared sensory and neural basis in auditory rhythmic processing. 探花直播acoustic 鈥榣andmarks鈥 for speech rhythm provide automatic triggers for aligning speech rhythms and brain rhythms, and Goswami has shown that this automatic process can be disrupted, thereby disrupting speech encoding for these children.</p> <p>鈥淚t is a huge honour to be elected to the Royal Society and a wonderful acknowledgement of our research in the Centre for Neuroscience in Education,鈥 said Goswami. 鈥淚 have been interested in children's reading and language development since training as a primary school teacher, and we have used neuroscientific insights to understand the mechanisms underpinning developmental language disorders. It is fantastically rewarding for our work to be recognised in this way.鈥</p> <p><strong>Professor Rebecca Kilner FRS</strong></p> <p><strong>Professor of Evolutionary Biology and Director of the 探花直播 Museum of Zoology</strong></p> <p>Professor Kilner researches the evolution of animal behaviour, and how this behaviour then affects the pace and scope of subsequent evolutionary change. Using experimental evolution, her current work investigates how quickly populations can adapt when environmental conditions change.</p> <p>Kilner discovered novel ways in which social behaviour drives evolutionary change. She used elegant cross-fostering experiments in birds and insects to expose how family members exert selection on each other, and discovered hidden evolutionary conflicts between parents and their offspring, and among adults caring together for offspring.</p> <p>Kilner said: 鈥淚鈥檓 astonished, honoured and delighted to be elected to the Fellowship of the Royal Society. This honour is shared with everyone I have ever worked with. Science is a team effort and I鈥檝e been incredibly lucky to collaborate with brilliant colleagues throughout my career.鈥</p> <p><strong>Professor David Rowitch FMedSci FRS</strong></p> <p><strong>Professor and Head of the Department of Paediatrics, Wellcome Trust Senior Investigator</strong></p> <p>Professor Rowitch鈥檚 basic and translational research on glial cells, comprising 90% of cells in the human brain, has been transformative. Rowitch鈥檚 established how embryonic central nervous patterning specifies myelinating oligodendrocytes through essential functions of Olig2, a study that helped initiate genetic methodologies in glial biology, and how astrocyte functional diversification is critical for support of neural circuits in the spinal cord. He has applied a developmental neuroscience perspective to better understand human neonatal brain development and white matter injury in premature infants, multiple sclerosis and leukodystrophy.</p> <p>Rowitch said: 鈥淚t is a great honour to be elected to the Fellowship of the Royal Society, joining many of my esteemed Cambridge, and other scientific, colleagues.鈥</p> <p><strong>Professor Richard Samworth FRS</strong></p> <p><strong>Professor of Statistical Science and Director of the Statistical Laboratory</strong></p> <p>Professor Samworth has made fundamental contributions to the development of modern statistical methodology and theory. ERC Advanced Grants are designed to support excellent scientists in any field with a recognised track record of research achievements in the last ten years. Apart from strengthening Europe鈥檚 knowledge base, the new research projects will also lead to the creation of some 1,900 new jobs for post-doctoral fellows, PhD students and other research staff.<span class="Apple-converted-space">聽</span></p> <p>Professor Melinda Duer from the Yusuf Hamied Department of Chemistry has been awarded a grant for her EXTREME project to explore the chemistry that happens when a biological tissue stretches or breaks.</p> <p>So-called mechanochemistry leads to molecules being generated within the tissue that may be involved in communicating tissue damage to cells. Detecting and understanding this chemistry is highly relevant for understanding ageing, and for developing new therapeutics for degenerative diseases and cancer.</p> <p>鈥淭his award means I can do the research I鈥檝e been dreaming about for the last ten years,鈥 said Duer. 鈥淚 am extremely grateful to the European Research Council for giving me this amazing opportunity. 探花直播ERC is one of the few organisations that understands the need for longer-term funding for high-risk, high-reward research, which is essential for this project. I really couldn鈥檛 be more delighted and I can鈥檛 wait to get started!鈥</p> <p>Professor Manish Chhowalla, from the Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy, received funding for his 2D-LOTTO project, for the development of energy-efficient electronics.</p> <p>鈥淭his grant will enable our research group to realise the next generation of energy-efficient electronics based on two-dimensional semiconductors,鈥 he said. 鈥 探花直播funding will also support a team of students, early career researchers and senior academics to address the challenges of demonstrating practical tunnel field effect transistors.鈥</p> <p>Professor Henning Sirringhaus from the Cavendish Laboratory received funding for his NANO-DECTET project, for the development of next-generation energy materials. 鈥淲orldwide, only about a third of primary energy is converted into useful energy services: the other two thirds are wasted as heat in the various industrial, transportation, residential energy conversion and electricity generation processes,鈥 said Sirringhaus. 鈥淕iven the urgent need to mitigate the dangerous consequences of climate change, a waste of energy on this scale needs to be addressed immediately.</p> <p>鈥淭hermoelectric waste-heat-to-electricity conversion could offer a potential solution, but the performance of thermoelectric materials is currently insufficient. In this project we will use the unique physics of molecular organic semiconductors, as well as hybrid organic-inorganic semiconductors, to make efficient, low-temperature thermoelectric materials.鈥</p> <p>Professor Marcos Martinon-Torres from the Department of Archaeology received funding for his REVERSEACTION project, which will study how societies in the past cooperated. 鈥淢any prehistoric societies did pretty well at maintaining rich and complex lives without the need for permanent power hierarchies and coercive authorities,鈥 he said. 鈥淎rguably, they chose to cooperate, and not just to ensure survival. 探花直播lack of state structures did not stop them from developing and sustaining complex technologies, making extraordinary artefacts that required exotic materials, challenging skills and labour arrangements. I鈥檓 keen to understand why, but also how they managed.</p> <p>鈥淭his grant couldn鈥檛 have come at a better time, as collective action is increasingly recognised as the only way to tackle some of our greatest global concerns, and there is value in studying how people collaborated in the past. With our labs freshly revamped through our recent <a href="https://collectionsresearch.lib.cam.ac.uk/research-growth-networks/materiality/cambridge-heritage-science-hub/cherish-infrastructure">AHRC infrastructure grant</a>, we are ready to take on a new large-scale, challenging archaeological science project.鈥</p> <p>Professor Marta Mirazon Lahr, also from the Department of Archaeology, was awarded funding for her NGIPALAJEM project, which will bring a new understanding of how the evolution of our species is part of a broader and longer African evolutionary landscape.</p> <p>鈥淢y research is in human evolution, a field that advances through technical breakthroughs, new ideas, and critically, new fossils,鈥 said Lahr. 鈥淎 big part of my work is to find new hominin fossils in Africa, which requires not only supportive local communities and institutions, but long-term planning and implementation, a dedicated team, significant funds and the time to excavate, study, compare and interpret new discoveries. This new grant from the ERC gives me all this and more 鈥 and I just can鈥檛 wait to get started!鈥</p> <p>Professor Richard Samworth鈥檚 RobustStats project will develop robust statistical methodology and theory for large-scale data. 鈥淟arge-scale data are usually messy: they may be collected under different conditions, and data may be missing or corrupted, which makes it difficult to draw reliable conclusions,鈥 said Samworth, from the Department of Pure Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics. 鈥淭his grant will allow me to focus my time on developing robust statistical methodology and theory to address these challenges. Equally importantly, I will be able to build a group of PhD students and post-docs that will dramatically increase the scale and scope of what we are able to achieve.</p> <p>Professor Zoran Hadzibabic from the Cavendish Laboratory was awarded funding for his UNIFLAT project. One of the great successes of the last-century physics was recognising that complex and seemingly disparate systems are fundamentally alike. This allowed the classification of the equilibrium states of matter into classes based on their basic properties. At the heart of this classification is the universal collective behaviour, insensitive to the microscopic details, displayed by systems close to phase transitions.</p> <p>A grand challenge for modern physics is to achieve such a feat for the far richer world of the nonequilibrium collective phenomena. 鈥淥ur ambition is to make a leading contribution to this worldwide effort, through a series of coordinated experiments on homogeneous atomic gases in two-dimensional (2D) geometry,鈥 said Hadzibabic. 鈥淪pecifically, we will study in parallel three problems 鈥 the dynamics of the topological Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless phase transition, turbulence in driven systems, and the universal spatiotemporal scaling behaviour in isolated quantum systems far from equilibrium. Each of these topics is fascinating and of fundamental importance in its own right, but beyond that we will experimentally establish an emerging picture that connects them.鈥</p> <p>Dr Helen Williams from the Department of Earth Sciences said: 鈥淏y funding the EarthMelt project, the ERC has given me the amazing opportunity to study the early evolution of the Earth and its transition from a largely molten state to the habitable planet we know today. This funding will also help me to develop exciting new instrumentation and analytical techniques, and, most importantly, mentor and support the next generation of PhD students and postdoctoral researchers working in geochemistry.鈥</p> <p>Professor Sir Richard Friend from the Cavendish Laboratory has been awarded funding for his Spin Control in Radical Semiconductors (SCORS) project, which will explore the electronic properties of organic semiconductors that have an unpaired electron to give net magnetic spin. 探花直播project is based on a recent discovery that this unpaired electron can couple strongly to light, allowing very efficient luminescence in LEDs. Friend鈥檚 group will explore new combinations of optical excited states with magnetic spin states. It seems a difficult assertion to take seriously, but six years on, there is little question that their skills are at a premium.</p>&#13; &#13; <p>Indeed, we may need statisticians now more than at any time in our history. Even compared with a decade ago, we can now gather, produce and consume unimaginably large quantities of information. As Varian predicted, statisticians who can crunch these numbers are all the rage. A new discipline, 鈥楧ata Science鈥, which fuses statistics and computational work, has emerged.</p>&#13; &#13; <p>鈥淧eople are awash in data,鈥 reflects Zoubin Ghahramani, Professor of Information Engineering at Cambridge. 鈥淭his is occurring across industry, it鈥檚 changing society as we become more digitally connected, and it鈥檚 true of the sciences as well, where fields like biology and astronomy generate vast amounts of data.鈥</p>&#13; &#13; <p>Over the past few years, Richard Samworth, Professor of Statistics, has watched the datarati step out from the shadows. 鈥淚t鈥檚 probably fair to say that statistics didn鈥檛 have the world鈥檚 best PR for quite a long time,鈥 he says. 鈥淪ince this explosion in the amount of data that we can collect and store, opportunities have arisen to answer questions we previously had no hope of being able to address. These demand an awful lot of new statistical techniques.鈥</p>&#13; &#13; <p>鈥楤ig data鈥 is most obviously relevant to the sciences, where large volumes of information are gathered to answer questions in fields such as genetics, astronomy and particle physics, but it also has more familiar applications. Transport authorities gather data from electronic ticketing systems like Oyster cards to understand more about passenger movements; supermarkets closely monitor customer transactions to react to shoppers鈥 predilections. As users of social media, many of us disclose data about ourselves that is as valuable to marketing as it is relevant to psychoanalytics. Increasingly, we are also 鈥榣ifeloggers鈥, monitoring our own behaviour, health, diet and fitness, through smart technology.</p>&#13; &#13; <p>This information, as Ghahramani points out, is no use on its own: 鈥淚t fills hard drives, but to extract value from it, we need methods that learn patterns in the data and allow us to make predictions and intelligent decisions.鈥 This is what statisticians, computer scientists and machine learning specialists bring to the party 鈥 they build algorithms, which are coded as computer software, to see patterns. At root, the datarati are interpreters.</p>&#13; &#13; <p>Despite their 鈥榮exy鈥 new image, however, not enough data scientists exist to meet this rocketing demand. Could some aspects of the interpretation be automated using artificial intelligence instead, Ghahramani wondered? And so, in 2014 and with funding from Google, the first incarnation of 探花直播Automatic Statistician was launched online. Despite minimal publicity, 3,000 users uploaded datasets to it within a few months.</p>&#13; &#13; <p><img alt="" src="/sites/www.cam.ac.uk/files/inner-images/150603_zoubin-and-richard.jpg" style="width: 590px; height: 260px; float: left;" /></p>&#13; &#13; <p>Once fed a dataset, the Automatic Statistician assesses it against various statistical models, interprets the data and 鈥 uniquely 鈥 translates this interpretation into a short report of readable English. It does this without human intervention, drawing on an open-ended 鈥榞rammar鈥 of statistical models. It is also deliberately conservative, only basing its assessments on sound statistical methodology, and even critiquing its own approach.</p>&#13; &#13; <p>Ghahramani and his team are now refining the system to cope with the messy, incomplete nature of real-world data, and also plan to develop its base of knowledge and to offer interactive reports. In the longer term, they hope that the Automatic Statistician will learn from its own work: 鈥 探花直播idea is that it will look at a new dataset and say, 鈥楢h, I鈥檝e seen this kind of thing before, so maybe I should check the model I used last time鈥,鈥 he explains.</p>&#13; &#13; <p>While automated systems rely on existing models, new algorithms are needed to extract useful information from evolving and expanding datasets. Here, the role of human statisticians is vital.</p>&#13; &#13; <p>To characterise the problem, Samworth presents a then-and-now comparison. During the past century, a typical statistical problem might, for instance, have been to understand the relationship between the initial speed and stopping distance of cars based on a sample size of 50.</p>&#13; &#13; <p>These days, however, we can record information on a huge number of variables at once 鈥 the weather, road surface, make of car, wind direction, and so on. Although the extra information has the potential to yield better models and reduce uncertainty, in many areas, the number of features measured is so high it may even exceed the number of observations. Identifying appropriate models in this context is a serious challenge, which requires the development of new algorithms.</p>&#13; &#13; <p>To resolve this, statisticians rely on a principle called 鈥榮parsity鈥; the idea that only a few bits of the dataset are really important. 探花直播statistician identifies these needles in the haystack. Various algorithms have been developed to select the important variables, so that the initial sprawl of information starts to become manageable and patterns can be extracted.</p>&#13; &#13; <p>Together with his colleague Dr Rajen Shah in the Department of Pure Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics, Samworth has developed a method for refining any such variable selection technique called 鈥楥omplementary Pairs Stability Selection鈥. This applies the original method to random subsamples of the data instead of the whole, and does this over and over again. Eventually, the variables that appear on a high proportion of the subsamples emerge as those meriting further attention.</p>&#13; &#13; <p>Scanning Google Scholar for citations of the paper in which this was proposed, Samworth finds that his algorithm has been used in numerous research projects. One looks at how to improve fundraising for disaster zones, another examines potential biomarkers for breast cancer survival, and a third identifies risk factors connected with childhood malnutrition.</p>&#13; &#13; <p>How does he feel when he sees his work being applied so far and wide? 鈥淚t鈥檚 funny,鈥 he says. 鈥淢y training is in mathematics and I still get a kick from proving a theorem, but it鈥檚 also rewarding to see people using your work. It鈥檚 often said that the good thing about being a statistician is that you get to play in everyone鈥檚 back yard.
