Of particular concern is the fact that female participation in STEM subjects 鈥 science, technology, engineering and mathematics 鈥 suffers from a 鈥渓eaky pipeline鈥. Up to the age of sixteen, as many girls as boys study maths and science, but thereafter a gap opens up which continues to widen at each step of聽the career ladder.

For this reason, many of Cambridge鈥檚 access events aim to encourage female students, particularly those in state sector schools and colleges, to continue studying mathematics and science at school and to apply for university courses in which women are currently under-represented across the UK.

Recent events have included

聽

Robinson College鈥檚 Women in Science Festival

Robinson welcomed 124 female Sixth Formers from across the country to its inaugural Women in Science Festival,聽an entirely free one day event aimed at encouraging more young women to pursue further study in science and maths related disciplines.

探花直播event opened with five talks by female scientists currently making waves at Cambridge. Dr Liisa Van Vliet spoke about microscopy, Dr Teresa Tiffert on Malaria and Anaemias and Dr Athina Markaki on Cardiovascular stents. 聽They were followed by two PhD students 鈥 Joana Grah discussed the use of Mathematical Image Analysis in Cancer Research while Diana Vasile revealed the computer science behind mobile devices.

Twelve courageous Sixth Formers then took to the stage to give five minute presentations about a STEM topic which they feel passionate about, earning feedback from an expert judging panel. After taking lunch at Robinson with College Fellows and students, the participants visited the Department of Materials Science & Metallurgy to experience 探花直播-level laboratory work. 探花直播most popular experiment involved measuring the temperature-dependent properties of rubber, with the participants using liquid nitrogen to cool their samples.

Robinson鈥檚 Dr Rachel Oliver, a Reader in Materials Science, said "We believe that many young women have the potential to make a real contribution in STEM subjects, but they are sometimes put off by misconceptions about science and engineering, or about the people who work in those fields. 聽We wanted to give Sixth Formers the opportunity to meet real female scientists and engineers and be inspired by the work they do.鈥澛
聽

Gonville & Caius College鈥檚 Women in Economics Day

Highly respected female economists including Dame Kate Barker, a former member of the Bank of England鈥檚 Monetary Policy Committee, and Dr Vicky Pryce, former joint head of the Government Economic Service, gave 100 Sixth Form girls a clear message: 鈥淓conomics Needs You!鈥澛

Women currently represent about 36% of applications to study economics at Cambridge and receive 37 per cent of offers. This is significantly higher than the UK average. A recent study by the 探花直播 of Southampton found that women account for just 27 per cent of economics students in the UK, despite making up 57 per cent of the overall undergraduate population. Nevertheless, the Collegiate 探花直播 would like to see more women studying Maths in Sixth Form and going on to apply聽to study economics.

探花直播event at Gonville & Caius was run by Dr Victoria Bateman, Director of Studies for Economics at the College. Dr Bateman told a packed auditorium "Sadly, the lack of female representation in the subject has meant that economists have built a model of the economy which tells only half of the story. 探花直播future of economics 鈥 and the economy 鈥 is in your hands.鈥

探花直播students received a welcome message from Carolyn Fairbairn, who gained a double first in economics at Caius and becomes the CBI鈥檚 first female director general in November 2015. Ms Fairbairn said economics was too often seen as 鈥渁 science that only an elite of often male experts are qualified to comment on鈥 and argued that women鈥檚 views were vital if economic policy were to respond to the needs of both genders.

聽

Corpus Christi College鈥檚 STEM Summer School for Years 12 &聽13

For the first time, Corpus Christi ran a three-day STEM event for 16-18 year old female students from across the country. 86 schools, the vast majority state sector, selected one hundred participants to take part in recognition of their impressive academic achievements and their passion for one or more of the STEM subjects.

探花直播event combined hands-on activities, departmental visits and lectures on a diverse range of topics, from the chemistry of water to a programming language for blind children. It also included a practical advice session on STEM interviews at Cambridge.

Unforgettable words of encouragement came from Dame Athene Donald, Professor of Experimental Physics and Master of Churchill College, Cambridge, who spoke of the importance of perseverance and the increasingly interdisciplinary nature of the sciences.

Event leader, Dr Sophie Zadeh, Fellow in Psychology at Corpus Christi College, said 鈥淲e鈥檙e thrilled that we鈥檝e been able to offer these young women the opportunity to experience Cambridge but we want to ensure the impact of this event reaches far beyond the attendees. It will focus on the challenges of the most marginalised 鈥搃ncluding girls from poor households, or those with disabilities鈥攊n the poorest countries, notably in Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia.鈥

Addressing a packed auditorium, Julia Gillard spoke of the 121 million children of primary and lower-secondary school age who are not in school 鈥揳t least 60 million of whom are girls. At current rates of enrolment, she said, it will be at least another century before the gap in learning outcomes is bridged between developed and developing countries. 鈥淯nsurprisingly,鈥 she noted, 鈥済irls will get there last.鈥

探花直播benefits of all girls in developing countries being educated to secondary level would be immediate and long-lasting 鈥揳 significant decrease in child marriages and a fall in child deaths being only two of the most obvious. 鈥 探花直播education of girls is transformative. It is a moral duty and also an economic imperative. Business as usual is nowhere near good enough. By not acting we fail the children and deny ourselves the best possible future.鈥

She called for 鈥渕ore research, more resources and more innovation鈥 to ensure that all countries are committed to inclusive and equitable quality education. 鈥淚t is a mammoth undertaking鈥, she said, before adding: 鈥 探花直播need for the REAL centre is pressing. It will make a difference in helping us to understand what works to make education more equitable. It will generate much light to educate every child, including every girl. 探花直播REAL centre will be one of real achievement.鈥

Speaking about Norway鈥檚 efforts to ensure global equality of education, ahead of the Oslo Summit for Education and Development in July, Dr Hans Brattskar said: 鈥淓quality of education means education for all, including children with disabilities.聽 It also means ensuring education for the 36% of children currently living in areas of armed conflict or caught in humanitarian crises.鈥 To provide equitable education 鈥渨e have to ensure research is applied in a way that leads to concrete policy and learning鈥, he said. 鈥淩EAL will be key to strengthening this evidence-base.鈥.

Professor Pauline Rose, director of the REAL, spoke about the new centre on a panel following the keynote presentations: 鈥 探花直播three words that describe REAL are rigour, partnership and impact. We have to deliver high-quality research that is accessible to policy-makers. We can鈥檛 do this on our own, and so partnerships are essential.鈥

She announced a new partnership with the Campaign for Female Education (Camfed), the Cambridge-based international non-profit organisation that aims to tackle poverty and inequality by supporting girls to go to school and develop leadership qualities across countries in sub-Saharan Africa. 鈥淚t is difficult to find evidence for what works in education,鈥 Professor Rose said. 鈥淐amfed鈥檚 work is an important exception. We look forward to working together with Camfed, drawing on their experience on the ground, and working together to provide a strong evidence-base on girls鈥 education.鈥

Sharing the panel with her was Camfed鈥檚 Chief Executive Officer, Lucy Lake, who remarked: 鈥淲e have to be insistent on girls鈥 rights to education. That has to be our starting point. But we must go beyond and make explicit the link between girls鈥 education and economic opportunity. That鈥檚 where evidence-based research is essential.鈥

Also on the panel was Fiona Mavhinga, a founding member of the CAMA, the pan-African network of young women leaders for girls鈥 education supported by Camfed, who spoke movingly about her own experience of achieving education despite challenging circumstances. 鈥淚 am sitting her today as a lawyer because of the support I got from Camfed. I was a seventeen-year old girl from a disadvantaged Zimbabwean family and they encouraged me to study law.鈥

Today, Ms Mavhinga supports young women engaging with government authorities to prevent gender-based violence and discrimination. 探花直播child-protection guidance she developed has been recognised as best practice and adopted by the United Nations Girls鈥 Education Initiative.
