Cambridge talent recognised in 2025 New Year Honours

Former ̽��ֱ�� of Cambridge Vice-Chancellor Professor Sir Leszek Borysiewicz, an Honorary Fellow of Wolfson College, Homerton College and St Edmund's College, is made Knight Grand Cross (GBE) for services to cancer research, clinical research, medicine and to charities.

Professor Ijeoma Uchegbu, who has been President of Wolfson College since October 2024, becomes a Dame (DBE) for services to chemical sciences and inclusion and diversity. Professor Uchegbu is a renowned expert in the field of pharmaceutical science and was most recently Professor of Pharmaceutical Nanoscience at ̽��ֱ�� College London. Her research has focussed on methods that can be used to help drugs reach their target more effectively and reduce the likelihood of uncomfortable side effects. While at UCL she spearheaded a project to improve outcomes for both staff and students from under-represented ethnic groups. She is is a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences and an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry.

She said: “I’m absolutely thrilled. I wouldn’t say I’m humbled – I know people say that, but when I saw the letter at the Porters’ Lodge what I felt was an overwhelming sense of gratitude and pride. In my wildest dreams I never believed I would get such an award.”

Professor Ashley Moffet, Professor of Reproductive Immunology, is made Companion of the Most Distinguished Order of Saint Michael and Saint George (CMG) for services to reproductive health. A Fellow of King's College, she is the foremost international authority on the immunology of human reproduction and her work on genetic research has helped explain high rates of pre-eclampsia and maternal mortality in Ugandan populations. She is a Fellow of both the Academy of Medical Sciences and the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists.

She said: "I am delighted by this honour that is a tribute to the hard work and dedication of my many colleagues both here in Cambridge and in Uganda who are working together so tirelessly to support women in the field of maternal health."

Professor Gilly Carr is Professor of Conflict Archaeology and Holocaust Heritage and receives an OBE for services to Holocaust research and education. Professor Carr, a Fellow of St Catharine's College, is a member of both the UK delegation of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) and the academic advisory board for the UK Holocaust Memorial Centre. Professor Carr has a particular research interest in wartime incarceration, internment and imprisonment. 2024 saw the publication of her latest book, 'A Materiality of Internment', which drew on over 15 years of research and interviews with more than 65 former internees.

She said: “I am absolutely thrilled for my research and teaching to be recognised in this way. I've been working hard on behalf of victims of Nazism and the Holocaust for 15 years and for this to be seen as nationally important and worthwhile encourages me to continue my work with vigour.”

Professor Rachel Oliver, who also receives an OBE, is a materials engineer, inventor and commercial spinout founder. A Fellow of Robinson College, she is currently Director of the Cambridge Centre for Gallium Nitride and Chief Scientific Officer of Poro Technologies Ltd (Porotech). Her research is in understanding and engineering the small-scale structure of semiconductor materials to enable new technologies to develop. Professor Oliver is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Engineering and is a passionate advocate for equality, diversity and inclusion in science and engineering.

She said: “I am delighted to receive this honour and it is vital that I acknowledge the fabulous teams that I work with both in the ̽��ֱ�� of Cambridge and at Porotech, a company that spun out from my research group. I hope I can encourage more people to get involved in semiconductors in the UK. ̽��ֱ��semiconductor ecosystem has been an exciting place to work throughout my career, but never more so than right now, with both research and industry rapidly growing and stepping up to address some of the most pressing challenges we face.”

Dr James Biddulph, former headteacher of the ̽��ֱ�� of Cambridge Primary School, has been awarded an MBE for services to education. Dr Biddulph was the inaugural headteacher of the school from 2015 until 2023, and under his leadership it attained an Outstanding Ofsted rating in 2018.

Eleanor Sharpston KC, an Emeritus Fellow of King's College, has been made Dame Commander of the Order of St Michael and St George (DCMG) for services to Justice and to the Education of Law in the UK and Europe. Dame Eleanor has combined a career as a barrister (specialising in European Union and European Convention on Human Rights law) with an academic career first at ̽��ֱ�� College London and then at the ̽��ֱ�� of Cambridge where she continues as a Yorke Distinguished Visiting Fellow at the Law Faculty. She was also Arthur Goodhart Visiting Professor in Legal Science from 2023 to 2024.

Academics and staff at both the ̽��ֱ�� of Cambridge and Colleges feature in the 2025 list, which recognises the achievements and service of people across the UK.

Cambridge achievers recognised in 2024 New Year Honours list

Professor Dame Carol Black is awarded a Dame Grand Cross (GBE) for public service. Black was Principal of Newnham College from 2012-2019 and formerly a Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the ̽��ֱ�� of Cambridge. GBE is the highest rank in the Order, and rarely awarded, to recognise the most exceptional and sustained service to the UK. Since its creation in 1917, fewer than 80 women have been awarded a GBE.

She said: “I am absolutely delighted to have been made a Dame Grand Cross of the Order of the British Empire. This award comes almost 20 years after I received a DBE for services to medicine and recognises the progress being made to tackle some of the most entrenched and interrelated problems in society – poverty, homelessness, unemployment, and drug dependency. My heartfelt thanks go to everyone who has helped and supported me, and to those individuals doing great work on the frontline to change culture and practice.”

Composer Judith Weir, Honorary Fellow and alumna of King’s College, Cambridge, is awarded Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire for services to music. Weir is Master of the King’s Music, having been appointed by Queen Elizabeth II in 2014, and has twice written a specially-commissioned carol for the college’s A Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols.

Organist, conductor and broadcaster Anna Lapwood, Janeway Director of Music at Pembroke College, Cambridge, is awarded Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for services to music. Lapwood reaches a huge audience through her concerts and via social media with over 1 million followers across all platforms. Her passion for the organ is matched by her mission to support girls and women in music.

She said: “When you work as a musician, so much of what you do isn't quantifiable or finite - your work on a certain piece is never 'finished', and your playing is always changing and developing. Receiving this award feels like something concrete - a deeply significant moment in my musical journey.”

Gerard Grech, former CEO and Founder of Tech Nation, is awarded Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) for services to the technology sector. He joined Cambridge Enterprise this year to lead a new flagship initiative, 'Founders at the ̽��ֱ�� of Cambridge', that will support ̽��ֱ�� founders to make an even greater impact on the world in the technology and software sectors.

Grech said: “I’m honoured to have been recognised for my contribution to the growing success of the UK’s tech and startup sector which is increasingly creating globally important tech and science-backed companies, from my time at Tech Nation. This honour is also recognition of the founders, ecosystem experts, investors, policy makers, and my colleagues who generously shared their knowledge and insights to support the UK’s most ambitious tech entrepreneurs. I would like to extend my sincere thanks to them all for all their hard work.”

Dr Sabesan Sithamparanathan, Enterprise Fellow at Girton College, Cambridge, and former student in the ̽��ֱ��’s Department of Engineering, is awarded Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for services to innovation technology. As Founder & President of PervasID he pioneered the world’s most accurate battery-free, real-time location tracking technology which is now in use by several NHS trusts, the largest aircraft manufacturers, airlines and blue-chip retailers.

He said: “I am absolutely delighted; this is a great honour and testament to the hard work and innovation of the entire team at PervasID. Our products offer a national and international benefit and we will continue to pioneer technology that has a wider value to society as a whole.”

Professor Ann Prentice, Honorary Senior Visiting Fellow at the ̽��ֱ��’s MRC Epidemiology Unit, is awarded Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) for services to British and Global Public Health Nutrition. A former director of the MRC Elsie Widdowson Laboratory (previously MRC Human Nutrition Research) at Cambridge, and programme leader of the MRC Nutrition and Bone Health Research Group at Cambridge, she was also head of the calcium, vitamin D and bone health research team at MRC Unit ̽��ֱ��Gambia. Her research is focused on life-course nutritional requirements for population health, with an emphasis on calcium and vitamin D, and encompasses the nutritional problems of both affluent and resource-limited societies.

She said: “I am delighted to receive this honour on behalf of all the people, in this country and worldwide, who have worked with me to improve our understanding of the links between nutrition and health.”

Dr Gillian Tett, Provost at Kings College, Cambridge, is awarded Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for services to Economic Journalism. Tett, a former student at the ̽��ֱ��, is currently Chairman of the US Editorial Board and America Editor-at-Large of the Financial Times. She became the 45th Provost at King’s College in October 2023, and is renowned for her warnings ahead of the financial crisis of 2008.

Tett said: “I am deeply honoured to receive an OBE - and hope this helps to champion the importance of British intellectual capital, both in journalism and higher education. Thank you to everyone who has helped me in my career!”

Joan Winterkorn is awarded Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for services to heritage and culture. She is an expert on archives and literary and historical manuscripts, and was formerly in the antiquarian and rare book trade. In Cambridge she played a vital role in enabling the Churchill Archive Centre to acquire the papers of Sir Winston Churchill and Lady Thatcher and the ̽��ֱ�� Library to gain those of Siegfried Sassoon and Dame Margaret Drabble. In 2019 she received the honorary degree of Master of Arts from the ̽��ֱ��.

Maxine Purdie, Head of Catering and Conferences at Girton College, ̽��ֱ�� of Cambridge, is awarded an MBE for services to knowledge exchange. Prior to arriving at Girton, she spent two decades at PraxisAuril, a world-leading professional association for knowledge exchange practitioners, where she became CEO and a Board Director.

Dr Rosie Trevelyan, Director of the Tropical Biology Association, is awarded an MBE for her services to environmental science and International conservation. Over the last three decades, Trevelyan developed the Tropical Biology Association into a globally respected organisation that offers an exceptionally high standard of ecology and conservation training to scientists, project managers and educators working to manage and safeguard tropical biodiversity in the long term. This international NGO has offices in the David Attenborough Building, Cambridge, UK and at Nature Kenya in Nairobi, Kenya.

Professor Elizabeth Robertson, an alumna and Honorary Fellow of Darwin College, has been appointed a CBE. Recognised as a world leader in mammalian developmental genetics, Robertson‘s early work focused on embryonic stem cell gene targeting, a technique that pioneered the ability to genetically alter mice. She initiated this work as a post-doctoral fellow with Sir Martin Evans at the ̽��ֱ�� of Cambridge. “It was a big surprise and extremely gratifying to have received this honour,” Robertson said.

̽��ֱ��Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby (Alumnus and Honorary Fellow of Trinity College), was appointed GCVO (Knight Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order).

̽��ֱ��Dean of Westminster, David Hoyle (Alumnus of Corpus Christi College, Honorary Fellow and former Fellow of Magdalene College) was appointed KCVO (Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order).

Maxine Ficarra, formerly Chief Executive Officer of PraxisAuril, the UK's professional association for Knowledge Exchange practitioners, has been made an MBE for her services to Knowledge Exchange. She led the not-for-profit, which was co-founded in 2002 by Professor David Secher, Life Fellow of Gonville & Caius College, and former Director of Research Services at the ̽��ֱ�� of Cambridge, for 20 years.

Also in 2024, Robert Chartener, a Fellow Commoner of Magdalene College and Chairman of the Magdalene Foundation, was awarded an Honorary OBE for services to Higher Education. It relates primarily to years of fundraising, both for Magdalene and for the support of its students.

Academics and staff associated with the ̽��ֱ�� of Cambridge feature in the 2024 list, which recognises the achievements and service of people across the UK, from all walks of life.

Leaders in fields from chemistry to cancer research and computing are among the Cambridge academics recognised today.

King's College Director of Music, Stephen Cleobury, was knighted for his services to choral music.

Sir Stephen has been Director of Music at the College since 1982. His work at King’s has primarily seen him associated with the Choir of King’s College, and he has played an enormous role in enhancing the reputation of the world-famous choir and developing its activities in broadcasting, touring and recording.

He has commissioned a great number of new choral works from leading composers, and is known particularly for introducing the now annually commissioned carol at the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols on Christmas Eve.

During his time at King’s, Sir Stephen has worked with many leading orchestras and soloists around the world. He was Chief Conductor of the BBC Singers between 1995 and 2007, he is Chairman of the Incorporated Association of Organists Benevolent Fund, which seeks to support organists and church musicians in need, and he is President of the Friends of Cathedral Music and of the Herbert Howells Society.

He said: “I am profoundly honoured to have received this award. I have sought to nourish and support the precious choral tradition that we have in this country, and to be an advocate for the innumerable benefits of singing and choral music. Nothing I have achieved would have been possible without the outstanding singers with whom I have been so fortunate to work. It has been, truly, a privilege.”

King’s College announced in 2018 that Sir Stephen would retire in September 2019 after 37 years in post.

̽��ֱ��Provost of King’s College, Professor Michael Proctor, said: “ ̽��ֱ��College is delighted and deeply proud that our distinguished Director of Music, Sir Stephen Cleobury, has been recognised in this way.

"In his 37 years in this post, Stephen’s outstanding musicianship has not only maintained and enriched the College’s own international musical reputation, but has made an invaluable contribution to the musical life of the United Kingdom and, indeed, the world.”

Professor Anna Vignoles and Professor Sylvia Richardson have both received a CBE.

Professor Vignoles, who received her CBE for her services to social sciences, holds the 1938 Chair in the Faculty of Education, and is a Fellow of Jesus College. She is also a Fellow of the British Academy and a member of the Economic and Social Research Council.

Her work focuses on the ways in which we can both improve social mobility and ensure that people have the skills they need for the modern labour market. She is known for her work using large scale data to illuminate the very unequal educational and economic outcomes for children growing up in different family circumstances, as well as her research into how well the education system is meeting the needs of both individuals and the wider economy.

Her research has suggested ways to reduce the large socio-economic inequalities in education achievement that we have in the UK.

She said: “I am so grateful for this wonderful honour. It is particularly gratifying to have recognition for the importance of social science research in tackling many of the economic challenges and inequalities that we face today.”

Head of the Faculty of Education, Professor Susan Robertson, said: “This is wonderful recognition of Professor Anna Vignoles’ contribution to our different communities.”

Professor Richardson, who received her CBE for services to medical statistics, is the Director of the MRC Biostatistics Unit, a Bye-Fellow at Emmanuel College, and has held a Research Professorship at the ̽��ֱ�� since 2012.

She is a Fellow of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics and of the International Society for Bayesian Analysis. Professor Richardson has worked extensively in many areas of biostatistics research and has made important contributions to the statistical modelling of complex biomedical data. Her work has contributed to progress in disease mapping, and her recent research has focused on the modelling and analysis of large data problems such as those arising in genomics.

She said: “I’m extremely delighted and humbled to receive this honour. It means a great deal to me personally, but I believe that this is also an important recognition of the pivotal role that statistics plays in cross-disciplinary endeavors to improve health. ̽��ֱ��MRC has been a significant funder of my research and I would like to thank them for their continued commitment to the field of biostatistics; support that they have shown for over 100 years since the inception of the MRC Biostatistics Unit in 1913.

"I am fortunate to have worked in both France and the UK, over the duration of my career thus far, and I feel that this opportunity to draw from both traditions has allowed me to achieve the recognition in the field of medical statistics for which I am being acknowledged today.”

Dr Jean Wilson, a Senior Member of Newnham College, King's College and Lucy Cavendish College, and who was previously President of the Church Monuments Society, received an MBE for services to heritage.

Dr Wilson, who is also a member of the McDonald Institute for Archaeological Research, said: "I hope that this award will further raise the profile of the Society and of the national cultural heritage to which it is dedicated."

Cambridge academics recognised in Queen’s Birthday Honours

Professor Theresa Marteau, Director of the Behaviour and Health Research Unit and a fellow of Christ’s College, has been appointed a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire for her services to public health. Her work on the development and evaluation of interventions to change behaviour in diet, physical activity, tobacco and alcohol consumption is aimed at improving population health and reducing health inequalities, with a particular focus on targeting non-conscious processes.

“This is a huge honour,” says Professor Marteau, who is also a fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences and of the Academy of Social Sciences. “It is wonderful to have recognition for the contribution that behavioural science can make to improving the health of the population. I am also proud to be a role model to more junior women scientists.”

Also recognised is fellow public health expert Professor Carol Brayne, who has been made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) for services to public health medicine. Professor Brayne is a Fellow of Darwin College.

As Director of the Cambridge Institute of Public Health, Professor Brayne’s research interests have focused on dementia and brain health with ageing, particularly on population studies for policy and planning, risk and protective factors, as well as scientific understanding of what dementia in older populations really looks like. Her studies have shown that dementia has declined age for age in contemporary UK populations and the possible protective role of modifiable factors such as education.

Professor Brayne is a fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences and has leadership roles for Public Health nationally, regionally and locally. “It is a great honour to receive this award and I’m privileged to work in public health with outstanding colleagues, in a field that contributes so much to the health and wellbeing of the public worldwide,” she says.

Professor Serena Best of the Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy has also been awarded a CBE, for services to Biomaterials Engineering. She is co-director of the Cambridge Centre for Medical Materials, which is developing next-generation medical materials to interact therapeutically with the body.

Professor Best’s research aims to expand the range and performance of bioactive scaffolds in clinical applications. She is Senior Vice President of the Institute of Materials, Mineral and Mining and a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering.

Professor Best, a fellow of St John’s College, says: “ ̽��ֱ��honour reflects the impact of materials and engineering in the development of improved healthcare technologies. In receiving this award, I would also like to acknowledge the important contribution of the team in Cambridge.”

Professor Alexandra Walsham of the Faculty of History has also been made a CBE, for services to history. Her research focuses on the religious and cultural history of early modern Britain and she has published widely in this field.

A fellow of Trinity College, Professor Walsham has been a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society since 1999 and was elected a Fellow of the British Academy in 2009 and of the Australian Academy of the Humanities in 2013.

"I am bewildered and humbled by this unexpected honour, which I am still struggling to take in," says Walsham. "I hope that I can endeavour to deserve it by providing further service to History in the coming years."

̽��ֱ��recognition of distinguished female academics at Cambridge has been welcomed by Professor Eilis Ferran, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Institutional and International Relations, who says: “These honours recognise exceptionally talented women across the disciplines at Cambridge. Not only do they highlight their outstanding academic achievements, they celebrate the seminal contributions to the fields of public health, engineering and history they have made.”

Gender Champion-Elect at the ̽��ֱ�� of Cambridge, Professor Valerie Gibson, says: “This is a tremendous achievement by our senior women academics and recognises just some of the serious talent that Cambridge has to offer.”

Fellow Gender Champion-Elect Professor Sarah Colvin adds: “ ̽��ֱ��range of achievements of the women who are being honoured – across public health, engineering, and modern history – is a good reflection of the diversity of that talent. Huge congratulations!”

Ottoline Leyser (above left) is Director of the Sainsbury Laboratory. She becomes a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) for services to Plant Science, Science in Society and Equality and Diversity in Science.

Dame Ottoline’s research aims to understand how plants adjust their growth and development to suit the environmental conditions in which they are growing. In particular, she is studying how plants change the number of shoot branches they produce depending on factors such as nutrient supply and damage to the main shoot. She is particularly interested in the roles and mechanisms of action of plant hormones such as auxin. She is a Fellow of Clare College.

“This is a huge honour,” said Dame Ottoline. “It’s so uplifting that things I really care about can be celebrated in this extraordinary way. Science has such a lot to offer the world, which makes it really important that science is open to all, so that everyone can contribute to the process and benefit from the results.”

Shankar Balasubramanian (above right) is Herchel Smith Professor of Medicinal Chemistry in the Department of Chemistry the ̽��ֱ�� of Cambridge, Senior Group Leader at the Cancer Research UK Cambridge Institute and Fellow of Trinity College. He has been named a Knight Bachelor for services to science and medicine. He co-invented next generation sequencing which has provided the most transformative change in biology and medicine for several decades, and has led to the $1000 dollar human genome. He has also made important contributions to four-stranded DNA, known as G-quadruplexes, and their role in cancer.

“It is a great honour for me and a wonderful acknowledgement of the research and I have carried out in Cambridge with my co-workers and collaborators over the past two decades,” said Sir Shankar. “I was particularly pleased to see recognition of our basic science and its impact on medicine, as I am jointly appointed between the Departments of Chemistry and Medicine.”

Professor John Pyle, Head of the Department of Chemistry, is appointed CBE for services to Atmospheric Chemistry and Environmental Science. Professor Pyle’s research uses of state-of-the-art numerical models, run on supercomputers, to study the processes controlling the present state of the atmosphere and its evolution. He is a Fellow of St Catharine’s College.

"I'm delighted, of course," said Pyle. "We are the best chemistry department in the country and one of the very best in the world. It's fantastic for the department to get recognition for that work."

Professor John Spencer, Bye Fellow in Law at Murray Edwards College, Life Fellow of Selwyn College and Professor Emeritus of Law, is also appointed CBE for services to the Reform of Law Concerning Child Witnesses. His interests include criminal law, criminal evidence, comparative criminal law, and the law of tort. He has been involved in a great many of projects for law reform, including as a Consultant to the Law Commission on a project to reform the hearsay rule in 1995; as a member of a committee of experts set up by the European Commission to study fraud on the Community finances, and as a member of the Home Office group that drafted “Achieving Best Evidence in Criminal Proceedings” (1999-2001). He was also a consultant to the Auld Review of Criminal Courts in 2001.

Professor Jane Francis, Director of the British Antarctic Survey and Fellow of Darwin College, is appointed Dame Commander of the Order of St Michael and St George for services UK Polar Science and Diplomacy. She was only the fourth woman in history to receive the Polar Medal in 2002. Since being appointed Director of BAS in 2013, she has had a dual role of ensuring UK scientific polar excellence and promoting British sovereign interests in Antarctica. As the first female Director, she has embraced gender diversity and has been an inspiration and influential figure in the British scientific establishment. She is globally recognised as a leader in Polar Science and has made a significant contribution to our understanding of palaeo-climates. She has also undertaken a wide range of international roles which further promote the UK’s polar interests and sits on polar science advisory boards for other countries.

Professor Peter Weissberg, former Medical Director of the British Heart Foundation and Fellow of Wolfson College, has been awarded a CBE for services to medical research and cardiovascular health. Prior to his tenure at the BHF, Professor Weissberg established the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine at Cambridge and spent ten years as the ̽��ֱ��’s first BHF Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine.

Distinguished members of the ̽��ֱ�� of Cambridge have been named in the 2017 New Year Honours list, announced today. Professor Ottoline Leyser, Professor Shankar Balasubramanian and Professor John Pyle are among those who have been recognised for their contributions to society.

Cambridge people named in the Queen's Birthday Honours list

Professor Harshad Kumar Dharamshi Bhadeshia FRS FREng (pictured centre) is the Tata Steel Professor of Metallurgy in the Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy and Director of the SKF Steel Technology Centre. His work is focused on transformation theory, which is concerned with the arrangement of atoms in a solid, in order to enable the invention of new iron alloys. He has been appointed a Knight Bachelor for services to Science and Technology.

Professor Christopher Munro Clark (pictured right) is the Regius Professor of History. His research work is centred on the history of 19th-century Germany and continental Europe. He has published numerous studies and books relating to the political and cultural history of religion, Kaiser Willhelm II, and the history of Prussia. He has been appointed a Knight Bachelor for services to British German relations.

Archibald Hugh Duberly, CBE is the Lord-Lieutenant of Cambridgeshire and a Senior Member of Wolfson College. He has been appointed a KCVO.

Professor Christopher Aidan Gilligan (pictured left) is the Head of the Epidemiology and Modelling Group in the Department of Plant Sciences. His work is focused on developing and testing a theoretical framework to understand the mechanisms that control invasion, persistence, scaling and variability of epidemics within changing agricultural and natural landscapes. He is also a Trustee of the Natural History Museum, by Prime Ministerial appointment. He has been appointed CBE for services to plant health in the field of epidemiology.

Professor Elizabeth Anne Howlett Hall is Professor of Analytical Biotechnology and Head of the Cambridge Analytical Biotechnology Group in the Department of Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology. Her research work is into heterogenous analytical systems with a primary focus on molecular sensors and directed towards environmental, medical and industrial application. She is also the Chair of Disability Snowsports UK. She has been appointed CBE for services to higher education and to sport.

Professor Anthony John Holland is Professor of the Psychiatry of Learning Disabilities and Head of the Cambridge Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Research Group in the Department of Psychiatry. His main areas of research include the relationship between genetic syndromes and associated psychiatric and behavioural disorders, and clinico-legal studies. He is also Chair in Learning Disabilities at the Health Foundation, Fellow and Vice-President of the International Association for the Scientific Study of Intellectual Disability, President of the UK Prader-Willi Association, and President of Cambridge MENCAP. He has been appointed CBE for services to psychiatry.

Professor James Anthony Jackson FRS is Professor of Active Tectonics and Head of the Department of Earth Sciences. His work exploits techniques in earthquake source seismology, geomorphology, space geodesy and remote sensing to examine how the continents are deforming today on all scales: from the details of the fault rupture in single earthquakes, to how that faulting has created the local geomorphology and structure, to how regional fault patterns and motions can accommodate deformation of vast continental areas. He is also part of the Dynamic Earth and Geohazards Group, and the lead Principal Investigator on the Earthquakes Without Frontiers Project – a joint NERC-ESRC consortium supporting a partnership of physical and social scientists working to help increase resilience to earthquakes in countries in Asia. He has been apointed CBE for services to environmental science.
