Topping out the ̽��ֱ�� of Cambridge Primary School building

̽��ֱ��main contractor, Willmott Dixon welcomed guests from the School, the ̽��ֱ�� and the development team to the site of the new school building. ̽��ֱ��topping-out event marked the installation of the roof light located on the highest point of the building.

Those in attendance included: the School’s Headteacher, James Biddulph; Chair of the School Governors, Professor John Rallison; the ̽��ֱ��’s Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Institutional Affairs, Professor Jeremy Sanders; Registrary, Dr Jonathan Nicholls; and the Deputy Project Director, Heather Topel, and Construction Director, Gavin Heaphy for the North West Cambridge Development alongside Managing Director of Willmott Dixon, Chris Tredget.

Work on the iconic circular design of the school started in November 2014 and will be completed in two phases. ̽��ֱ��first phase of the building is due to be handed over in August 2015 for the start of the academic year in September 2015. ̽��ֱ��second phase of the building is expected to be handed over in December 2015.

James Biddulph, Headteacher of the school said: “Seeing the building take its incredible form this year has been very inspirational - the circular shape, open spaces and teaching rooms will make for a fantastic learning environment for the school community and we are grateful to the team for the remarkable progress that has been made to date. Our teachers can’t wait to start the new term in the new facility with our new pupils.”

̽��ֱ�� ̽��ֱ�� of Cambridge Primary School will provide education for children aged four – 11. ̽��ֱ��school will be a mixed-ability co-educational school. It will not have a specific religious character, nor a particular faith ethos. In addition to providing an inclusive and high-quality primary education for local children, the ̽��ֱ�� of Cambridge Primary School will also offer unique training and research opportunities through its close relationship with the Faculties and Departments of the ̽��ֱ�� of Cambridge.

̽��ֱ��design of the building by Marks Barfield Architects, creators of the London Eye, has been informed by discussions with the Faculty of Education and leading educational experts to create a unique learning environment that will fulfil its commitments to being an inclusive school and to being a ̽��ֱ�� Training School.

Heather Topel, Deputy Project Director of the North West Cambridge Development said: “Delivering the primary school is a demonstrable commitment that the ̽��ֱ�� has made to providing community facilities from the outset. It is a great milestone not just for the school but also the wider development and local communities, and we look forward to welcoming children and their families as the first users of the buildings in the very near future.”

Access to the school will be along the new road off Huntingdon Road, called Eddington Avenue, and restricted initially to parents and users of the school due to on-going construction works for the first phase of the North West Cambridge Development. ̽��ֱ��school will be the first building in operation as part of the 150-hectare North West Cambridge Development.

̽��ֱ��North West Cambridge Development is the largest single capital project that the ̽��ֱ�� of Cambridge has undertaken in its 800-year history. Outline planning permission was granted in February 2013 for the scheme, subject to approval of site-wide legal conditions and Reserved Matters Applications, on the 150-hectare site of ̽��ֱ�� farmland situated in between Huntingdon Road, Madingley Road and the M11.

̽��ֱ��masterplan includes 3,000 homes (50% ‘key worker’ housing, available for qualifying ̽��ֱ�� and Colleges employees), 2,000 post-graduate student spaces, 100,000 sqm of research space, a local centre and community facilities including a primary school, nursery, doctors’ surgery, supermarket and retail units, as well as all of the site-infrastructure and landscaping for the scheme. ̽��ֱ��development has been designed as an extension to the city, with an urban rather than suburban grain and will be of the highest design quality as well as being an exemplar of sustainable living.

Progress on the new building for the ̽��ֱ�� of Cambridge Primary School was celebrated with a topping-out ceremony this week as the construction of the first building on the North West Cambridge Development reached its highest point.

Our teachers can’t wait to start the new term in the new facility with our new pupils.

Curating Cambridge: Kettle's Yard autumn season

Past, Present, Somewhere: Films and Projects by Karen Guthrie & Nina Pope (13 September – 23 November 2014) is a rare opportunity to enjoy the collected films and projects by the artist duo, in their first gallery show since their winning installation for the Northern Art Prize in 2008.

Founding their collaborative entity Somewhere in the mid-nineties, Guthrie and Pope have long challenged the proscribed boundaries of the art world, creating idiosyncratic films and diverse participatory projects that range from interactive online worlds to a vast community-built ‘model village’ made from cob (an ancient earth building technique). This last piece was the result of their most recent commission Tomorrow, Today for the ̽��ֱ��’s North West Cambridge Development.

What runs through Guthrie and Pope’s fifteen years of work is a fascination with history and with place, and with how we make ourselves at home in the world by making both our own. Perhaps inevitably for a working partnership, their work is full of dichotomies skilfully and wittily explored - an early devotion to the Internet coupled with a love of craft; insightful self-portaiture and autobiography interwoven with grand communal histories; a delight in the domestic and the super- local balanced with a fascination for other cultures and countries.

Their acclaimed documentary films shine a light on often marginalised or unknown communities. A dedicated cinema room focuses on a presentation of three of their most important feature-length films, including Jaywick Escapes, the portrait of a deprived and long-forgotten Essex seaside town and its prospectless inhabitants.

As part of an extended programme of talks and events relating to Guthrie and Pope's wide-ranging and significant practice there will be a special screening of their newest film ̽��ֱ��Closer We Get.

This exhibition and associated events are part of Curating Cambridge, the ̽��ֱ�� of Cambridge Museums city-wide festival.

Gwen Raverat: Wood Engravings
13 September - 23 November 2014, in the House at Kettle’s Yard

In Helen Ede’s bedroom a series of wood engravings by Gwen Raverat (1885-1957) will be on display. Most famous as the author of ‘Period Piece – a Cambridge Childhood’ Raverat also played a significant part in the wood engraving revival in Britain at the beginning of the 20th Century.

Thanks to the Raverat Archive and the Fitzwilliam Museum for their assistance with this exhibition.

Issam Kourbaj: New Installation
13 September - 26 October 2014, in St Peter’s Church

Born in Syria, Kourbaj has lived in Cambridge since 1989 and has been artist in residence at Christ’s College for many years. This recent work is informed by current events in his native Syria. In ‘Unearthed (In Memoriam)’ old hardback book covers are placed side by side covering much of the church floor, some covers are painted with white or coloured paint others have a black line painted across them, a representation of the ribbons placed over the photographs of the recently deceased in Syria.

I Come from a Place: Katherine Green and North Cambridge Girls Group
18 October - 26 October 2014

Social documentary photographer Katherine Green and the ‘Club United’ group of teenage girls from North Cambridge have been photographing their community and experiences. At the same time, Katherine Green has been interviewing and taking portraits of some of the long term residents and community leaders from the area. ̽��ֱ��resulting exhibition celebrates this vibrant and welcoming part of the city.

This autumn Kettle’s Yard hosts four varied and inspiring exhibitions - Nina Pope & Karen Guthrie take over the main gallery with the first major survey of their work, Issam Kourbaj installs his moving piece Unearthed (In Memoriam) in St Peter's Church next to Kettle's Yard, Gwen Raverat's wood engravings are on display in a room in the house, and for one week only an exhibition of photographs by Katherine Green and the North Cambridge Girls Group takes place in the Learning Studio.

Together we strive, alongside people we meet, to piece together the past and make a stab at the future. Most importantly we spend time now, in the moment, struggling with the stuff of ‘Somewhere’ and trying to record what this can look like.

̽��ֱ�� ̽��ֱ�� of Cambridge Training School (UCTS) will have an explicit focus on research-based exemplary teaching and learning practice.

̽��ֱ��school will be a three-form-entry primary school located as part of the North West Cambridge Development, a new sustainable urban extension to Cambridge.

It will be a highly inclusive school in which pupil diversity is welcomed and where all children will be encouraged and enabled to excel.

Its admissions policy will be developed in consultation with existing Cambridge primary schools, as an expression of the ̽��ֱ��’s commitment to the principle of partnership.

̽��ֱ��first priority of the school will be to provide a high-quality primary education to all its pupils.

In addition, as a ̽��ֱ�� Training School, the school will be closely linked to the ̽��ֱ�� of Cambridge’s Faculty of Education and will join the well-established network of partner schools which work together to provide a PGCE programme that is rated by Ofsted as outstanding.

̽��ֱ��UCTS will fulfil its ̽��ֱ�� Training School function by the inclusion of a centre for research, the focus of which will be student learning, teacher learning, and the relationships between them. Partnership schools and local families will have the opportunity to shape the research programme, which will be agreed between the Faculty of Education and the UCTS Headteacher and teaching staff.

By bridging school-led teacher training, and school-focused academic research, the ̽��ֱ�� will create an integrated and holistic learning community for children and adults that is unique in the UK.

Professor Peter Gronn, Head of the Faculty of Education, said: “We are delighted with this announcement and that the UCTS will proceed. In partnership with schools and Teaching School alliances, the UCTS will build on the outstanding training already provided by the Faculty, thereby enabling it to play a lead national role in the enhancement of teacher quality, student learning and strategies for school improvement”.

̽��ֱ��Department for Education has supported the application by the ̽��ֱ�� of Cambridge to establish a ̽��ֱ�� Training School as part of its North West Cambridge Development.
