Complete clean sweep for Cambridge at 探花直播Boat Race 2025

Thousands of spectators lined the banks of the River Thames on 13 April to witness a dramatic afternoon of action, with millions more following live on the BBC.

Cambridge Women secured their eighth consecutive win in the 79th Women鈥檚 Boat Race, extending their overall record to 49 victories to Oxford鈥檚 30. 探花直播Men鈥檚 crew, too, were victorious in defending their title in the 170th edition of the event, notching up their 88th win, with Oxford sitting on 81.

Goldie, the Cambridge Men鈥檚 Reserve Crew, won the Men鈥檚 Reserve Race, while Blondie, the Cambridge Women鈥檚 Reserve Crew, won the Women鈥檚 Reserve Race. And the day before, the 2025 Lightweight Boat Race also saw two wins for Cambridge.

Cambridge鈥檚 Claire Collins said it was an incredible feeling to win the race.聽

鈥淭his is so cool, it鈥檚 really an incredible honour to share this with the whole club,鈥� she said.

探花直播Women鈥檚 Race was stopped initially after an oar clash, but Umpire Sir Matthew Pinsent allowed the race to resume after a restart. Claire said that the crew had prepared for eventualities such as a restart and so were able to lean on their training when it happened.

鈥淚 had total confidence in the crew to regroup. Our focus was to get back on pace and get going as soon as possible and that鈥檚 what we did.鈥�

For Cambridge Men鈥檚 President Luca Ferraro, it was his final Boat Roat campaign, having raced in the Blue Boat for the last three years, winning the last two.

He said: 鈥淚t was a great race. 探花直播guys really stepped up. That鈥檚 something that our Coach Rob Baker said to us before we went out there, that each of us had to step up individually and come together and play our part in what we were about to do. I couldn鈥檛 be prouder of the guys, they really delivered today.鈥�

Professor Deborah Prentice, Vice-Chancellor of the 探花直播 of Cambridge, congratulated all the crews following the wins.

鈥淚 am in awe of these students and what they have achieved, and what Cambridge 探花直播 Boat Club has been able to create,鈥� she said.

鈥淭hese students are out in the early hours of the morning training and then trying to make it to 9am lectures. It鈥檚 so inspiring. And a complete clean sweep 鈥� this was an incredibly impressive showing by Cambridge, I am so proud of them.鈥�

探花直播Cambridge Blue Boats featured student athletes drawn from Christ鈥檚 College, Downing College, Emmanuel College, Gonville & Caius, Hughes Hall, Jesus College, Pembroke College, Peterhouse, St Edmund鈥檚, and St John鈥檚.

Cambridge is celebrating a complete clean sweep at 探花直播Boat Race 2025, with victories in all 4聽openweight races and also both lightweight races.

Countdown to 探花直播Boat Race 2025
探花直播prestigious race, one of the oldest amateur sporting events in the world, will take place along the 6.8 km Championship Course from Putney to Mortlake. 探花直播Women's Boat Race will commence at 1:21pm British Summer Time (BST), followed by the Men's Boat Race at 2:21pm BST.

Cambridge鈥檚 women鈥檚 crew enters the race as the defending champions and currently leads the overall tally at 48-30. Meanwhile, Cambridge鈥檚 men鈥檚 crew also holds the advantage, leading Oxford 87-81, with one historic dead heat in 1877.

Praise for the athletes

Siobhan Cassidy, Chair of 探花直播Boat Race Company, congratulated the athletes on their selection for one of the Blue Boats. 鈥淚 am not sure that everyone appreciates just what it takes to compete at this level,鈥� she told the event.

鈥淗aving witnessed the intense training over a number of years, I can tell you these guys are no ordinary students; they combine their academic courses with a high-performance rowing programme. Their commitment to excellence on and off the water is truly extraordinary. It is nothing short of superhuman.鈥�

Renowned BBC Sport commentator Andrew Cotter, who hosted the event, emphasised the purity of 探花直播Boat Race in today鈥檚 sporting landscape. 鈥淚n the modern era of sport, when so much is inflated by money and professionalism, this is sport stripped back to its essence,鈥� he said.聽

鈥淚t is pure competition, it is about winning and losing. And I know that鈥檚 how the athletes feel about it, but they also feel that this is where they will make friendships that will last a lifetime.鈥�

Historic firsts and environmental commitments

This year鈥檚 event will also see a landmark moment in Boat Race history. Sarah Winckless MBE will become the first woman to umpire the Men鈥檚 Boat Race on the Championship Course. Sir Matthew Pinsent CBE will oversee the Women鈥檚 Boat Race.

Additionally, 探花直播Boat Race Company, alongside the Cambridge and Oxford 探花直播 Boat Clubs, have given their support to the London Rivers鈥� Pledge, a 10-year environmental initiative focused on improving water quality and sustainability on the Thames and beyond.

With the crews now announced and excitement continuing to build, all eyes will be on the Thames this April as Cambridge and Oxford prepare to write the next chapter in their historic rivalry.

探花直播men鈥檚 match saw Cambridge open聽the scoring with a fifth-minute penalty from George Bland (King鈥檚), but Oxford responded with two tries, both converted, to establish a 21-6 lead. Despite the early setback, Cambridge rallied before halftime with tries from Matt Riddington (St Edmund鈥檚) and Alex Christey (St John鈥檚), both converted by Bland, to narrow the gap to 21-18.

Oxford extended their lead early in the second half but Cambridge refused to relent. A try from Ryan Santos (Jesus), followed by a decisive score from Luke John (Emmanuel), turned the tide in Cambridge鈥檚 favour. Bland鈥檚 conversion and a late penalty sealed a dramatic 35-28 victory, marking the Light Blues鈥� third consecutive Varsity Match win.聽

探花直播women鈥檚 match proved to be a tougher challenge and despite a valiant defensive effort, the Light Blues were unable to contain a strong Oxford side. 探花直播Dark Blues scored two early tries and added a third before halftime to give Oxford a 15-0 lead.

Cambridge showed renewed determination in the second half, with Zoe Wright (Clare) scoring a try after a quick tap penalty. Phoebe Jackson鈥檚 (Jesus) conversion brought the score to 15-7, but Oxford crossed the line twice more to secure a 27-7 victory for the Dark Blues. While the women鈥檚 team didn鈥檛 go home with the trophy their relentless tackling and commitment to the game earned them praise.

探花直播partnership will focus on three initial areas - community, inclusion and sport 鈥� with pilot programmes being planned. These will include events and visits to the Club鈥檚 stadium as part of initiatives to encourage more prospective students from deprived backgrounds around the country to apply to the 探花直播; and to enable more existing students to attend games.聽

探花直播探花直播 and Club have also established a high level partnership group which will meet regularly to drive progress and identify areas of opportunity. New programmes are likely to focus on supporting wellbeing and mental health, encouraging healthy lifestyles and improving access to sport.

Three of the 探花直播鈥檚 colleges will take part in the initial phase of activity as the 探花直播 and Club begin working together. 聽探花直播Club has also agreed that this year鈥檚 Varsity Match will take place at the Abbey Stadium on 15 March 2024.聽
