From ancient civilisations such as the Babylonians, Greeks, and Egyptians to modern-day astronomers, the allure of the starry sky has inspired countless quests to unravel the secrets of the universe.

And although models that explain the cosmos have existed for centuries, the field of cosmology, where scientists use quantitative methods to understand the evolution and structure of the universe, is relatively new鈥攈aving only formed in the early 20th century with the development of Albert Einstein鈥檚 theory of general relativity.聽

Now, a set of papers submitted to 探花直播Astrophysical Journal聽by researchers from the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT) collaboration has produced a new image that reveals the most detailed map of matter distributed across a quarter of the entire sky, reaching deep into the cosmos. It confirms Einstein鈥檚 theory about how massive structures grow and bend light, with a test that spans the entire age of the universe.

鈥淲e have mapped the invisible dark matter across the sky to the largest distances, and clearly see features of this invisible world that are hundreds of millions of light-years across,鈥 said co-author Professor Blake Sherwin from Cambridge鈥檚 Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics, where he leads a group of ACT researchers. 鈥淚t looks just as our theories predict.鈥

Although dark matter makes up a large chunk of the universe and shaped its evolution, it has remained hard to detect because it doesn鈥檛 interact with light or other forms of electromagnetic radiation. As far as we know, dark matter only interacts with gravity.聽

To track it down, the more than 160 collaborators who have built and gathered data from the National Science Foundation鈥檚 Atacama Cosmology Telescope in the high Chilean Andes observe light emanating following the dawn of the universe鈥檚 formation, the Big Bang鈥攚hen the universe was only 380,000 years old. Cosmologists often refer to this diffuse light that fills our entire universe as the 鈥渂aby picture of the universe,鈥 but formally, it is known as the cosmic microwave background radiation (CMB).

探花直播team tracks how the gravitational pull of large, heavy structures including dark matter warps the CMB on its 14-billion year journey to us, like how a magnifying glass bends light as it passes through its lens.

鈥淲e鈥檝e made a new mass map using distortions of light left over from the Big Bang,鈥 said Mathew Madhavacheril from the 探花直播 of Pennsylvania, lead author of one of the papers. 鈥淩emarkably, it provides measurements that show that both the 鈥榣umpiness鈥 of the universe, and the rate at which it is growing after 14 billion years of evolution, are just what you鈥檇 expect from our standard model of cosmology based on Einstein's theory of gravity.鈥澛

鈥淥ur results also provide new insights into an ongoing debate some have called 鈥 探花直播Crisis in Cosmology鈥,鈥 said Sherwin. This crisis stems from recent measurements that use a different background light, one emitted from stars in galaxies rather than the CMB. These have produced results that suggest the dark matter was not lumpy enough under the standard model of cosmology and led to concerns that the model may be broken. However, the team鈥檚 latest results from ACT were able to precisely assess that the vast lumps seen in this image are the exact right size.聽

鈥淲hen I first saw them, our measurements were in such good agreement with the underlying theory that it took me a moment to process the results,鈥 said Cambridge PhD candidate Frank Qu, lead author of one of the new papers. 鈥淏ut we still don鈥檛 know what the dark matter is, so it will be interesting to see how this possible discrepancy between different measurements will be resolved.鈥

鈥 探花直播CMB lensing data rivals more conventional surveys of the visible light from galaxies in their ability to trace the sum of what is out there,鈥 said Suzanne Staggs from Princeton 探花直播, Director of ACT. 鈥淭ogether, the CMB lensing and the best optical surveys are clarifying the evolution of all the mass in the universe.鈥澛

鈥淲hen we proposed this experiment in 2003, this measurement wasn鈥檛 even on our agenda; we had no idea the full extent of information that could be extracted from our telescope,鈥 said Mark Devlin, from the 探花直播 of Pennsylvania, Deputy Director of ACT. 鈥淲e owe this to the cleverness of the theorists, the many people who built new instruments to make our telescope more sensitive, and the new analysis techniques our team came up with.鈥

With ACT having been decommissioned in late 2022, further papers highlighting some of the other final results are slated for submission in the coming year. Observations will continue at the site with the Simons Observatory, including a new telescope due to begin in 2024 that can map the sky almost ten times faster.

探花直播pre-print articles highlighted in this release are available on act.princeton.edu and will appear on the open-access arXiv.org. Across more than 20 short episodes, the series explores what we already know about the Universe, what cosmologists and relativists are working on right now, and where new observations may lead in the future.

探花直播programme is inspired by the late Stephen Hawking鈥檚 ground-breaking work on cosmology, black holes and gravitational waves, and features researchers from the Hawking Centre for Theoretical Cosmology (CTC) and the Kavli Institute for Cosmology at the 探花直播 of Cambridge.

探花直播series explores the big questions in contemporary research which are being driven by new observations, such as the recent discovery of gravitational waves. It starts with Einstein鈥檚 general theory of relativity, describing how massive objects warp the fabric of spacetime and how they can collapse under their own gravity to form black holes. It explores how these black holes can send gravitational waves rippling across spacetime, and what happens if you were to fall into a black hole.

探花直播series also describes the violent explosion that marked the beginning of our Universe, and how the Universe expanded from this initial Big Bang, forming all the structures we observe today 鈥 galaxies, stars and planets. It then probes the mysteries that still puzzle cosmologists, such as dark energy and dark matter. 探花直播series ends with a future outlook of what we might expect to learn from ambitious new observational programmes. All the basic concepts underlying are presented in an easily accessible manner, and it features stunning graphics, some produced in collaboration with Intel鈥檚 Advanced Visualization team.

探花直播series features CTC and Kavli researchers explaining these remarkable concepts. It offers a glimpse of what it鈥檚 like to work at the cutting edge of cosmology: confronting sophisticated mathematics with observational data, employing some of the world鈥檚 fastest supercomputers, and even daring to challenge Einstein's highly successful theory in an attempt to explain what has so far defied explanation. Viewers not only learn about the deepest secrets of our Universe, but also find out about the everyday life of students and staff at a world-leading research centre.

探花直播collaboration between Discovery and the CTC started in 2010. A highlight was Discovery live-streaming Stephen Hawking's 75th birthday symposium which was a huge success watched by millions, especially among younger members of their audience.

探花直播series was filmed at the Centre for Mathematical Sciences and the Institute of Astronomy and produced with the help of science editors from Plus magazine, part of the 探花直播鈥檚 Millennium Mathematics Project outreach programme.

探花直播CTC team worked closely with Navada Studios, who were responsible for the video production, with editorial oversight from Discovery producers. Funding for the project was provided by the Kavli Foundation, an organisation dedicated to advancing science for the benefit of humanity, promoting public understanding of scientific research, and supporting scientists and their work.

鈥淲e are grateful to Discovery and the Kavli Foundation for supporting this unique opportunity to continue Stephen Hawking鈥檚 vision of reaching out, especially to younger audiences, to inspire curiosity about our Universe and the huge progress currently being made to unveil its secrets,鈥 said Paul Shellard, CTC Director. 鈥淭his was a remarkable collaboration in which we were able to work closely with the production team, ensuring both viewer interest and scientific accuracy, which we hope provides a great model for future science outreach.鈥

探花直播series is available on the new Discovery+ service that can be found at discoveryplus.co.uk, together with a short trailer. To find out more about the Hawking Centre, visit ctc.cam.ac.uk.

探花直播Stephen Hawking Centre for Theoretical Cosmology has teamed up with Discovery on a documentary series exploring new windows on our Universe.

We are grateful for this unique opportunity to continue Stephen Hawking鈥檚 vision of reaching out, especially to younger audiences, to inspire curiosity about our Universe and the huge progress currently being made to unveil its secrets

Paul Shellard

Discovery+

Universe Unravelled

探花直播text in this work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License. I鈥檓 trying to describe how those structures were formed. This is particularly interesting because we know that there were virtually no structures in the early universe. If we look at the afterglow of the Big Bang, the so-called cosmic microwave background, we observe that the matter was evenly distributed across the universe with tiny deviations of 10 parts in a million.聽

My research can feel a bit like detective work. We are trying to unveil what drives the evolution of our universe and determines its fate from a couple of key observations.聽 I find it fascinating to look for models that can describe almost 13 billion years of cosmic history. Since I am a theorist, I spend a large part of my day thinking, reading and calculating. Thanks to the active scientific life at DAMTP, almost all of my days include listening to seminars or colloquia talks and chatting to my colleagues from a lot of different fields of theoretical physics. When I am not travelling, I usually work either in the聽Centre for Mathematical Sciences聽or in Fitzwilliam College.

My favourite project is describing galaxy clustering using number counts. What I find so fascinating is that there are certain clustering statistics that contain a lot of information and can still be predicted accurately. This situation is quite remarkable because in general, it is hard to make good predictions for gravitational clustering where initially small deviations from mean density are amplified (making the system highly nonlinear). As a theoretical physicist, I love to look for 鈥檚mart鈥 observables that can be calculated from first principles and provide an accurate description of observations in the real world.

In 2016 I spent an incredibly inspiring week with more than 30 Nobel Laureates.聽This was the聽Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting聽in Physics, attended by more than 400 young participants. And as if that wasn't thrilling enough, I also had the opportunity to present part of my PhD research in a plenary talk at the Bavarian evening. It was certainly a dare to give a scientific talk in a dirndl in front of so many people, but it sparked great discussions and I am happy I got this chance.

My advice to everyone is to follow your interests and strive to achieve your own goals.聽Find people who don鈥檛 push you around but push you forward. It is widely believed, however, that once inflation starts, there are regions where it never stops. It is thought that quantum effects can keep inflation going forever in some regions of the universe so that globally, inflation is eternal. 探花直播observable part of our universe would then be just a hospitable pocket universe, a region in which inflation has ended and stars and galaxies formed.

鈥 探花直播usual theory of eternal inflation predicts that globally our universe is like an infinite fractal, with a mosaic of different pocket universes, separated by an inflating ocean,鈥 said Hawking in an interview last autumn. 鈥 探花直播local laws of physics and chemistry can differ from one pocket universe to another, which together would form a multiverse. But I have never been a fan of the multiverse. If the scale of different universes in the multiverse is large or infinite the theory can鈥檛 be tested. 鈥

In their new paper, Hawking and Hertog say this account of eternal inflation as a theory of the big bang is wrong. 鈥 探花直播problem with the usual account of eternal inflation is that it assumes an existing background universe that evolves according to Einstein鈥檚 theory of general relativity and treats the quantum effects as small fluctuations around this,鈥 said Hertog. 鈥淗owever, the dynamics of eternal inflation wipes out the separation between classical and quantum physics. As a consequence, Einstein鈥檚 theory breaks down in eternal inflation.鈥

鈥淲e predict that our universe, on the largest scales, is reasonably smooth and globally finite. So it is not a fractal structure,鈥 said Hawking.

探花直播theory of eternal inflation that Hawking and Hertog put forward is based on string theory: a branch of theoretical physics that attempts to reconcile gravity and general relativity with quantum physics, in part by describing the fundamental constituents of the universe as tiny vibrating strings. Their approach uses the string theory concept of holography, which postulates that the universe is a large and complex hologram: physical reality in certain 3D spaces can be mathematically reduced to 2D projections on a surface.

Hawking and Hertog developed a variation of this concept of holography to project out the time dimension in eternal inflation. This enabled them to describe eternal inflation without having to rely on Einstein鈥 theory. In the new theory, eternal inflation is reduced to a timeless state defined on a spatial surface at the beginning of time.

鈥淲hen we trace the evolution of our universe backwards in time, at some point we arrive at the threshold of eternal inflation, where our familiar notion of time ceases to have any meaning,鈥 said Hertog.

Hawking鈥檚 earlier 鈥榥o boundary theory鈥 predicted that if you go back in time to the beginning of the universe, the universe shrinks and closes off like a sphere, but this new theory represents a step away from the earlier work. 鈥淣ow we鈥檙e saying that there is a boundary in our past,鈥 said Hertog.

Hertog and Hawking used their new theory to derive more reliable predictions about the global structure of the universe. They predicted the universe that emerges from eternal inflation on the past boundary is finite and far simpler than the infinite fractal structure predicted by the old theory of eternal inflation.

Their results, if confirmed by further work, would have far-reaching implications for the multiverse paradigm. 鈥淲e are not down to a single, unique universe, but our findings imply a significant reduction of the multiverse, to a much smaller range of possible universes,鈥 said Hawking.

This makes the theory more predictive and testable.

Hertog now plans to study the implications of the new theory on smaller scales that are within reach of our space telescopes. He believes that primordial gravitational waves 鈥 ripples in spacetime 鈥 generated at the exit from eternal inflation constitute the most promising 鈥渟moking gun鈥 to test the model. 探花直播expansion of our universe since the beginning means such gravitational waves would have very long wavelengths, outside the range of the current LIGO detectors. But they might be heard by the planned European space-based gravitational wave observatory, LISA, or seen in future experiments measuring the cosmic microwave background.

Reference:
S.W. He will be much missed.鈥

Stephen William Hawking was born on January 8, 1942 in Oxford although his family was living in north London at the time. In 1959, the family moved to St Albans where he attended St Albans School. Despite the fact that he was always ranked at the lower end of his class by teachers, his school friends nicknamed him 鈥楨instein鈥 and seemed to have encouraged his interest in science. In his own words, 鈥減hysics and astronomy offered the hope of understanding where we came from and why we are here. I wanted to fathom the depths of the Universe.鈥

His ambition brought him a scholarship to 探花直播 College Oxford to read Natural Science. There he studied physics and graduated with a first class honours degree.

He then moved to Trinity Hall Cambridge and was supervised by Dennis Sciama at the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics for his PhD; his thesis was titled 鈥楶roperties of Expanding Universes.鈥櫬營n 2017, he made his PhD thesis freely available online聽via the 探花直播 of Cambridge鈥檚 Open Access repository. There have been over a million attempts to download the thesis, demonstrating the enduring popularity of Professor Hawking and his academic legacy.

On completion of his PhD, he became a research fellow at Gonville and Caius College where he remained a fellow for the rest of his life. During his early years at Cambridge, he was influenced by Roger Penrose and developed the singularity theorems which show that the Universe began with the Big Bang.

An interest in singularities naturally led to an interest in black holes and his subsequent work in this area laid the foundations for the modern understanding of black holes. He proved that when black holes merge, the surface area of the final black hole must exceed the sum of the areas of the initial black holes, and he showed that this places limits on the amount of energy that can be carried away by gravitational waves in such a merger. He found that there were parallels to be drawn between the laws of thermodynamics and the behaviour of black holes. This eventually led, in 1974, to the revelation that black holes have a temperature and produce radiation, now known as Hawking radiation, a discovery which revolutionised theoretical physics.聽

He also realised that black holes must have an entropy 鈥 often described as a measure of how much disorder is present in a given system 鈥 equal to one quarter of the area of their event horizon: 鈥 the 鈥榩oint of no return鈥, where the gravitational pull of a black hole becomes so strong that escape is impossible. Some forty-odd years later, the precise nature of this entropy is still a puzzle. However, these discoveries led to Hawking formulating the 鈥榠nformation paradox鈥 which illustrates a fundamental conflict between quantum mechanics and our understanding of gravitational physics. This is probably the greatest mystery facing theoretical physicists today.

To understand black holes and cosmology requires one to develop a theory of quantum gravity. Quantum gravity is an unfinished project which is attempting to unify general relativity, the theory of gravitation and of space and time with the ideas of quantum mechanics. Hawking鈥檚 work on black holes started a new chapter in this quest and most of his subsequent achievements centred on these ideas. Hawking recognised that quantum mechanical effects in the very early universe might provide the primordial gravitational seeds around which galaxies and other large-scale structures could later form. This theory of inflationary fluctuations, developed along with others in the early 1980鈥檚, is now supported by strong experimental evidence from the COBE, WMAP and Planck satellite observations of the cosmic microwave sky. Another influential idea was Hawking鈥檚 鈥榥o boundary鈥 proposal which resulted from the application of quantum mechanics to the entire universe. This idea allows one to explain the creation of the universe in a way that is compatible with laws of physics as we currently understand them.聽

Professor Hawking鈥檚 influential books included 探花直播Large Scale Structure of Spacetime, with G F R Ellis; General Relativity: an Einstein centenary survey, with W Israel; Superspace and Supergravity, with M Rocek (1981); 探花直播Very Early Universe, with G Gibbons and S Siklos, and 300 Years of Gravitation, with W Israel.

However, it was his popular science books which took Professor Hawking beyond the academic world and made him a household name. 探花直播first of these, A Brief History of Time, was published in 1988 and became a surprise bestseller, remaining on the Sunday Times best-seller list for a record-breaking 237 weeks. Later popular books included Black Holes and Baby Universes, 探花直播Universe in a Nutshell, A Briefer History of Time, and My Brief History. He also collaborated with his daughter Lucy on a series of books for children about a character named George who has adventures in space.

In 2014, a film of his life, 探花直播Theory of Everything, was released. Based on the book by his first wife Jane, the film follows the story of their life together, from first meeting in Cambridge in 1964, with his subsequent academic successes and his increasing disability. 探花直播film was met with worldwide acclaim and Eddie Redmayne, who played Stephen Hawking, won the Academy Award for Best Actor at the 2015 ceremony.

Travel was one of Professor Hawking鈥檚 pastimes. One of his first adventures was to be caught up in the 7.1 magnitude Bou-in-Zahra earthquake in Iran in 1962. In 1997 he visited the Antarctic. He has plumbed the depths in a submarine and in 2007 he experienced weightlessness during a zero-gravity flight, routine training for astronauts. On his return, he quipped 鈥淪pace, here I come.鈥

Writing years later on his website, Professor Hawking said: 鈥淚 have had motor neurone disease for practically all my adult life. Yet it has not prevented me from having a very attractive family and being successful in my work. I have been lucky that my condition has progressed more slowly than is often the case. But it shows that one need not lose hope.鈥

At a conference In Cambridge held in celebration of his 75th birthday in 2017, Professor Hawking said 鈥淚t has been a glorious time to be alive and doing research into theoretical physics. Our picture of the Universe has changed a great deal in the last 50 years, and I鈥檓 happy if I鈥檝e made a small contribution.鈥

And he said he wanted others to feel the passion he has for understanding the universal laws that govern us all. 鈥淚 want to share my excitement and enthusiasm about this quest. But at least they would have gotten the idea that we live in a Universe governed by rational laws that we can discover and understand.

鈥淚t has been a glorious time to be alive and doing research into theoretical physics. Our picture of the Universe has changed a great deal in the last 50 years, and I鈥檓 happy if I鈥檝e made a small contribution. Remember to look up at the stars and not down at your feet. Be curious. And however difficult life may seem, there is always something you can do and succeed at. It matters that you just don鈥檛 give up.鈥

All of the lectures are available to watch online.聽

<div
