For example, 28 million people in the UK are living with chronic pain and 1.3 million people with traumatic brain injury.

Neuro-technology 鈥 where technology is used to control the nervous system - has the potential to deliver new treatments for these disorders, in much the same way that heart pacemakers, cochlear implants and spinal implants have transformed medicine in recent decades.

探花直播technology can be in the form of electronic brain implants that reset abnormal brain activity or help deliver targeted drugs more effectively, brain-computer interfaces that control prosthetic limbs, or technologies that train the patient鈥檚 own cells to fight disease. ARIA鈥檚 Scalable Neural Interfaces opportunity space is exploring ways to make the technology more precise, less invasive, and applicable to a broader range of diseases.

Currently, an implant can only interact with large groups of neurons, the cells that transmit information around the brain. Building devices that interact with single neurons will mean a more accurate treatment. Neuro-technologies also have the potential to treat autoimmune disorders, including rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn鈥檚 disease and type-1 diabetes.

探花直播science of building technology small enough, precise enough and cheap enough to make a global impact requires an environment where the best minds from across the UK can collaborate, dream up radical, risky ideas and test them without fear of failure.

Professor George Malliaras from the 探花直播 of Cambridge鈥檚 Department of Engineering is one of the project leaders. 鈥淢iniaturised devices have the potential to change the lives of millions of people currently suffering from neurological conditions and diseases where drugs have no effect,鈥 he said. 鈥淏ut we are working at the very edge of what is possible in medicine, and it is hard to find the support and funding to try radical, new things. That is why the partnership with ARIA is so exhilarating, because it is giving brilliant people the tools to turn their original ideas into commercially viable devices that are cheap enough to have a global impact.鈥

Cambridge鈥檚 partnership with ARIA will create a home for original thinkers who are struggling to find the funding, space and mentoring needed to stress-test their radical ideas. 探花直播three-year partnership is made up of two programmes:

探花直播Fellowship Programme (up to 18 fellowships)

Blue Sky Fellows 鈥 a UK-wide offer - we will search the UK for people from any background, with a radical idea in this field and the plan and personal skills to develop it. 探花直播best people will be offered a fellowship with the funding to test their ideas in Cambridge rapidly. These Blue Sky Fellows will receive mentorship from our best medical, scientific and business experts and potentially be offered accommodation at a Cambridge college. We will be looking for a specific type of person to be a Blue Sky Fellow. They must be the kind of character who thinks at the very edge of the possible, who doesn鈥檛 fear failure, and whose ideas have the potential to change billions of lives, yet would struggle to find funding from existing sources. Not people who think outside the box, more people who don鈥檛 see a box at all.

Activator Fellows - a UK-wide offer - those who have already proved that their idea can work, yet need support to turn it into a business, will be invited to become Activator Fellows. They will be offered training in entrepreneurial skills including grant writing, IP management and clinical validation, so their innovation can be ready for investment.

探花直播Ecosystem Programme

探花直播Ecosystem Programme is about creating a vibrant, UK-wide neurotechnology community where leaders from business, science, engineering, academia and the NHS can meet, spark ideas and form collaborations. This will involve quarterly events in Cambridge, road trip events across the UK and access to the thriving online Cambridge network, Connect: Health Tech.

鈥淭his unique partnership is all about turning radical ideas into practical, low-cost solutions that change lives,鈥 said Kristin-Anne Rutter, Executive Director of Cambridge 探花直播 Health Partners. 鈥淐ambridge is fielding its best team to make this work and using its networks to bring in the best people from all over the UK. From brilliant scientists to world-leading institutes, hospitals and business experts, everyone in this collaboration is committed to the ARIA partnership because, by working together, we all see an unprecedented opportunity to make a real difference in the world.鈥

鈥淧hysical and mental illnesses and diseases that affect the brain such as dementia are some of the biggest challenges we face both as individuals and as a society,鈥 said Dr Ben Underwood, Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the 探花直播 of Cambridge and Honorary Consultant Psychiatrist at Cambridgeshire and Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust. 鈥淭his funding will bring together different experts doing things at the very limits of science and developing new technology to improve healthcare. It has become increasingly popular in recent years as a way of increasing wellbeing and reducing stress levels.

In the UK, the National Health Service offers therapies based on mindfulness to help treat mental health issues such as depression and suicidal thoughts. However, the majority of people who practice mindfulness learn their skills in community settings such as universities, workplaces, or private courses. Mindfulness-based programmes are frequently promoted as the go-to universal tool to reduce stress and increase wellbeing, accessible to anyone, anywhere.

Many randomised controlled trials (RCTs) have been conducted around the world to assess whether in-person mindfulness training can improve mental health and wellbeing, but the results are often varied. In a report published today in PLOS Medicine, a team of researchers from the Department of Psychiatry at the 探花直播 of Cambridge led a systematic review and meta-analysis to examine the published data from the RCTs. This approach allows them to bring together existing 鈥 and often contradictory or under-powered 鈥 studies to provide more robust conclusions.

探花直播team identified 136 RCTs on mindfulness training for mental health promotion in community settings. These trials included 11,605 participants aged 18 to 73 years from 29 countries, more than three-quarters (77%) of whom were women.

探花直播researchers found that in most community settings, compared with doing nothing, mindfulness reduces anxiety, depression and stress, and increases wellbeing. However, the data suggested that in more than one in 20 trials settings, mindfulness-based programmes may not improve these outcomes.

Dr Julieta Galante from the Department of Psychiatry at the 探花直播 of Cambridge, the report鈥檚 first author, said: 鈥淔or the average person and setting, practising mindfulness appears to be better than doing nothing for improving our mental health, particularly when it comes to depression, anxiety and psychological distress 鈥 but we shouldn鈥檛 assume that it works for everyone, everywhere.

鈥淢indfulness training in the community needs to be implemented with care. Community mindfulness courses should be just one option among others, and the range of effects should be researched as courses are implemented in new settings. 探花直播courses that work best may be those aimed at people who are most stressed or in stressful situations, for example health workers, as they appear to see the biggest benefit.鈥

探花直播researchers caution that RCTs in this field tended to be of poor quality, so the combined results may not represent the true effects. For example, many participants stopped attending mindfulness courses and were not asked why, so they are not represented in the results. When the researchers repeated the analyses including only the higher quality studies, mindfulness only showed effects on stress, not on wellbeing, depression or anxiety.

When compared against other 鈥榝eel good鈥 practices such as exercise, mindfulness fared neither better nor worse. Professor Peter Jones, also from Cambridge鈥檚 Department of Psychiatry, and senior author, said: 鈥淲hile mindfulness is often better than taking no action, we found that there may be other effective ways of improving our mental health and wellbeing, such as exercise. In many cases, these may prove to be more suitable alternatives if they are more effective, culturally more acceptable or are more feasible or cost effective to implement. 探花直播good news is that there are now more options.鈥

探花直播researchers say that the variability in the success of different mindfulness-based programmes identified among the RCTs may be down to a number of reasons, including how, where and by whom they are implemented as well as at whom they are targeted. 探花直播techniques and frameworks taught in mindfulness have rich and diverse backgrounds, from early Buddhist psychology and meditation through to cognitive neuroscience and participatory medicine 鈥 the interplay between all of these different factors can be expected to influence how effective a programme is.

探花直播number of online mindfulness courses has increased rapidly, accelerated further by the COVID-19 pandemic. Although this review has not looked at online courses, studies suggest that these may be as effective as their offline counterparts, despite most lacking interactions with teacher and peers.

Dr Galante added: 鈥淚f the effects of online mindfulness courses vary as widely according to the setting as their offline counterparts, then the lack of human support they offer could cause potential problems. We need more research before we can be confident about their effectiveness and safety.鈥

探花直播research was mainly聽funded by the National Institute for Health Research.

Reference
Galante, J et al. Mindfulness-based programmes for mental health promotion in adults in non-clinical settings: A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials. PLOS Medicine; 11 Jan 2021; DOI: 10.1371/journal.pmed.1003481

Mindfulness courses can reduce anxiety, depression and stress and increase mental wellbeing within most but not all non-clinical settings, say a team of researchers at the 探花直播 of Cambridge. Previous studies have also shown that autistic people are at higher risk of a variety of health conditions, but we don鈥檛 know what is driving these increased risks. Thus, better understanding of the physical health of autistic adults may help us improve both their quality and length of life.

1,156 autistic individuals and 1,212 non-autistic individuals took part in an anonymous, online survey developed by the team about their lifestyle choices and daily habits, personal and family medical history. 探花直播results indicate that autistic individuals are, on average, 1.5 to 4.3 times as likely to have a wide variety of health conditions, including low blood pressure, arrhythmias, asthma, and prediabetes.聽

This new study is also the first to examine the influence of smoking, alcohol use, and BMI. Surprisingly, the results show that these lifestyle factors (which increase the risk of chronic physical health problems in the general population) do not account for the heightened risk of heart, lung, and diabetic conditions seen among autistic adults.

探花直播study also explored the experiences of female respondents and of older adults, both of whom remain understudied groups. 探花直播results revealed that autistic females, even more so than autistic males, are more likely to report increased risks of physical health conditions. In addition, the types of conditions of risk depend on the person鈥檚 biological sex. For example, autistic females are 4.3 times more likely to have prediabetes than non-autistic females; however, autistic and non-autistic males are equally likely to have prediabetes. These results suggest that a 鈥渙ne size fits all鈥 approach to the healthcare of autistic people may not be effective.

Elizabeth Weir, the PhD student who led the study, said: 鈥淭his is a first step in better understanding why autistic individuals are so much more likely to have chronic physical health problems. While smoking, alcohol, and BMI may play a role, we now need to focus on what other biological (e.g. genetic, hormonal, etc), environmental, lifestyle (e.g. diet, exercise, sleep, etc) or healthcare-related factors are contributing to these health disparities.鈥

Professor Simon Baron-Cohen, Director of the Autism Research Centre at Cambridge, who was part of the team, said: 鈥淭his new study highlights the physical health risks to autistic individuals, and has important implications for their healthcare. Understanding the reasons why these disparities exist will allow us to better support autistic individuals and improve the quality and length of their lives.鈥

Funding for this project was provided by the Autism Research Trust, the聽Rosetrees聽Trust, and the Cambridge and Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust.聽

Autistic individuals are more likely to have chronic physical health conditions, particularly heart, lung, and diabetic conditions, according to a new study by researchers at the 探花直播 of Cambridge. 探花直播results are published in the journal Autism.

This is a first step in better understanding why autistic individuals are so much more likely to have chronic physical health problems

Elizabeth Weir

tomwieden

Doctor testing blood pressure

探花直播text in this work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License. It was supported by the Wellcome Trust and the National Institute for Health Research, and is recently published in the journal BMJ Open.聽聽

Recent studies suggest a broad range of mental health problems 鈥 depression, anxiety, impulsive behaviour, low self-esteem, and so on 鈥 can be taken as a whole to measure levels of 鈥渃ommon mental distress鈥 (CMD).

Researchers analysed levels of CMD in two large groups of young people through a series of questionnaires.

They also separately collected self-reported data on suicidal thinking and non-suicidal self-injury: predictive markers for increased risk of suicide 鈥 the second most common cause of death among 10-24 year-olds worldwide.

Both groups consisted of young people aged 14-24 from London and Cambridgeshire. 探花直播first contained 2,403 participants. 探花直播study鈥檚 methods 鈥 and findings 鈥 were then reproduced with a separate group of 1,074 participants.聽

鈥淥ur findings are noteworthy for being replicated in the two independent samples,鈥 said Jones.

CMD scores increase in three significant increments above the population average: mild mental distress, followed by moderate, and finally severe distress and beyond 鈥 which often manifests as a diagnosable mental health disorder.

Those with severe mental distress came out highest for risk of suicide. However, the majority of all participants experiencing suicidal thoughts or self-harming 鈥 78% and 76% respectively in the first sample, 66% and 71% in the second 鈥 ranked as having either mild or moderate levels of mental distress.

鈥淥ur findings help explain why research focusing on high-risk subjects has yet to translate into useful clinical tools for predicting suicide risk,鈥 said Jones. 鈥淪elf-harm and suicidal thoughts merit a swift response even if they occur without further evidence of a psychiatric disorder.鈥

探花直播findings point to a seemingly contradictory situation, in which most of the young people who take their own life may, in fact, be from the considerably larger pool of those deemed as low- or no-risk for suicide.

鈥淚t is well known that for many physical conditions, such as diabetes and heart disease, small improvements in the risks of the overall population translate into more lives saved, rather than focusing only on those at extremely high risk,鈥 said Jones.

鈥淭his is called the 鈥榩revention paradox鈥, and we believe our study is the first evidence that mental health could be viewed in the same way. We need both a public health and a clinical approach to suicide risk.鈥

鈥淲e are surrounded by technology designed to engage the attention of children and young people, and its effect on wellbeing should be seen by industry as a priority beyond profit.鈥

鈥淎t a government level, policies affecting the economy, employment, education and housing, to health, culture and sport must all take account of young people; supporting their wellbeing is an investment, not a cost. This is particularly important as the widespread effects of the Covid-19 pandemic unfold.鈥

Reference:
Polek E, Neufeld SAS, Wilkinson P, Goodyer I, St Clair M, Prabhu G, Dolan RJ, Bullmore ET, Fonagy P, Stochl J, Jones PB.
