At the same time, he saw that Cambridge students could make a major contribution to their local community while also enriching their university experience. Ruthven established a pioneering new programme, Cambridge STIMULUS, and recruited Toni Beardon OBE to be its hugely effective first co-ordinator.</div>&#13; &#13; <div> </div>&#13; &#13; <div>Now co-ordinated by the<span style="line-height: 20.8px;"> </span><a href="http://mmp.maths.org/" style="line-height: 20.8px;">Millennium Mathematics Project</a><span style="line-height: 20.8px;"> </span><span style="line-height: 1.6;">(</span><span style="line-height: 1.6;">since 1999), </span><a href="https://stimulus.maths.org/content/" style="line-height: 20.8px;">STIMULUS</a> <span style="line-height: 1.6;">has</span><span style="line-height: 1.6;"> seen extraordinary growth</span>. This academic year (2015-16), 190 Cambridge students have supported the teaching of STEM subjects in 19 primary schools, ten secondary schools, two sixth-form colleges, and one special school in the Cambridge area.</div>&#13; &#13; <div> </div>&#13; &#13; <div>STIMULUS volunteers are recruited from a wide range of disciplines but the majority study Mathematics, Engineering, Natural Sciences, Medicine or Computer Science. Most are undergraduates but some are Masters and even PhD students. </div>&#13; &#13; <div> </div>&#13; &#13; <div>Each STIMULUS placement involves a weekly commitment of usually one afternoon per week for one university term. Over the course of a year, the programme donates over 2,000 hours of volunteering to local schools.</div>&#13; &#13; <div> </div>&#13; &#13; <p></p>&#13; &#13; <div> </div>&#13; &#13; <div> ֱ̽programme also aims to encourage volunteers to consider teaching as a career and gives them valuable classroom experience.  Every year, several final year volunteers go on to study for a PGCE or are accepted on the <a href="https://www.teachfirst.org.uk/our-mission">Teach First</a> scheme but for most, the primary motivation is sharing their passion for their subject and helping others to succeed.</div>&#13; &#13; <div> </div>&#13; &#13; <div>Emma Russell, a Final Year Mathematics student helps at <a href="https://www.chestertoncc.net/">Chesterton Community College</a> once a week. Today, Emma is leading a drop-in maths clinic for Ruby and Catriona. Ruby, who is gearing up to sit her GCSE exams, wants some help with vectors, while Catriona, a Year-10 regular, just wants to stretch herself and build confidence.</div>&#13; &#13; <div> </div>&#13; &#13; <div>Catriona says: “Normally I don’t put my hand up in class but I find it easier to talk in a small group like this.” Ruby agrees: “I’m less afraid to get things wrong.”</div>&#13; &#13; <div> </div>&#13; &#13; <div>When asked whether they ever felt nervous about number crunching with a Cambridge maths whizz, Ruby and Catriona laugh. “I don’t think they find me very intimidating”, says Emma: </div>&#13; &#13; <div> </div>&#13; &#13; <div>“I started mentoring two years ago because I was considering a career in teaching. It’s also a great way to remove yourself from studying, which can be pretty intense. I’ve learnt how to look for different ways to explain things and to break problems down rather than just rush to the answer. It’s helped me a lot and I’ve just landed my first job teaching maths when I leave Cambridge.” </div>&#13; &#13; <div> </div>&#13; &#13; <div>Neil Kelly, Head of IT and a Maths teacher at Chesterton Community College, has been working with STIMULUS volunteers for five years, and says:</div>&#13; &#13; <div> </div>&#13; &#13; <div>“They’re particularly good at stretching our best students. ֱ̽programme dispels myths on both sides. It shows our students that these maths geniuses are normal people who started out at school like them. And it helps the mentors get out of their university bubble. They don’t just talk about maths, they get a relationship going and they have a really positive influence.”</div>&#13; &#13; <div> </div>&#13; &#13; <div>Neil adds: “I see it as part of my job to encourage the maths teachers of the future because we really need them and it’s a great thing to do with your life. ֱ̽problem is that if you study maths at university, you can get a highly paid job in finance or computing. You won’t get paid the same in education but teaching is more than a career, it’s a privilege.”</div>&#13; &#13; <div> </div>&#13; &#13; <div>2015 saw the expansion of the STIMULUS programme through a collaboration with<a href="https://codeclub.org/en/"> the national Code Club network</a>. Since October 2014, a team of volunteers have been running weekly sessions in several Cambridge primary schools to introduce these eager young students to programming. </div>&#13; &#13; <div> </div>&#13; &#13; <div>Alexander Simpson, a Final Year Computer Scientist from Scotland, has been running the show at <a href="https://www.stlukes.cambs.sch.uk/">St Luke’s Primary School in Chesterton</a> for nearly two years. He says:</div>&#13; &#13; <div> </div>&#13; &#13; <div>“I started because I was determined to get young people excited about programming and help make it more diverse, especially by getting more girls involved. I start by showing the children something inspirational that they might be able to create with software one day, like a space craft. Then we go back to the basics but they learn really fast and it’s a lot of fun.”</div>&#13; &#13; <div> </div>&#13; &#13; <div>Daryl Corlito, Teacher of Year 4 at St Luke’s, says: “Alexander’s sessions involve lots of transferrable problem-solving skills and he’s really helped to build confidence, especially among the girls. I’ve worked with STIMULUS for a long time and the children can’t wait to see the students.”</div>&#13; &#13; <div> </div>&#13; &#13; <div>Several rungs up the educational ladder, some STIMULUS mentors help students with A-Level Maths and Science, Further Maths and university applications. </div>&#13; &#13; <div> </div>&#13; &#13; <div>At <a href="http://www.longroad.ac.uk/">Long Road Sixth Form College</a>, Balaji Krishna, a First Year Mathematician at <a href="https://www.trin.cam.ac.uk/">Trinity College</a>, has been offering general classroom support. He says: “I went to a state school near Cardiff and used to help GCSE students there so I wanted to carry that on. It’s relaxing to come here and it reminds me how much I’ve learnt.”</div>&#13; &#13; <div> </div>&#13; &#13; <div>Meanwhile, Filip Bar, a Fourth Year PhD mathematician has been working one-to-one with Sam on his preparations for <a href="https://www.admissionstesting.org/for-test-takers/step/about-step/">STEP</a>, an exam used to assess aptitude for university study in mathematical subjects.</div>&#13; &#13; <div> </div>&#13; &#13; <div>Filip says: “Teaching rather than just thinking about mathematical problems is refreshing. I know the solution but how can I communicate it? It gives you a fresh perspective.”</div>&#13; &#13; <div> </div>&#13; &#13; <div>Long Road’s Maths Team Leader, Stephen Warr, says: “We use STIMULUS mentors in quite specific ways to make the most of their expertise. They often arrive looking nervous but they soon settle in and benefit from seeing how we interact, explain and use resources. I think there’s a cultural attitude in the UK that it’s ok to be bad at maths and that puts people off teaching the subject but you can transform lives and that’s very satisfying.”</div>&#13; &#13; <div> </div>&#13; &#13; <div>Volunteers take a break from STIMULUS in the ֱ̽’s Easter term to prepare for their exams but <a href="https://stimulus.maths.org/content/joining-stimulus">the project is already recruiting for Michaelmas Term</a>. </div>&#13; Hardy, John Edensor Littlewood and Srinivasa Ramanujan among them. </p>&#13; &#13; <p>None of these great minds had the benefit of working in the CMS, seven futuristic pavilions built in 2000-3, but thirty Year 10s from Bedfordshire are clearly embracing the opportunity.</p>&#13; &#13; <p>“I’m going to turn you all into a super computer” proclaims James Munro, an applied maths PhD student and today’s workshop leader. His audience exchanges nervous glances but James, an effervescent young tutor, is already bounding between tables handing out dice and describing the scenario.</p>&#13; &#13; <p>“You are in a duel with a cowboy. He misses half of the time and you miss five times out of six. Fortunately, you get to shoot first….”</p>&#13; &#13; <p>James invites everyone to start rolling their dice to simulate the probability of surviving the duel. For several minutes, a satisfying chorus of clattering dice and mathematical discussion fills the room. </p>&#13; &#13; <p>James keeps score and throws out questions about the results, before introducing progressively more complex scenarios. These include a Mexican Standoff in which one cowboy never misses, another strikes half the time and the weakest misses five times out of six. Before they know it, James’ students are tackling some thorny equations.</p>&#13; &#13; <p></p>&#13; &#13; <p>James’ own specialism, fluid dynamics, complements his teaching style. His workshop feels decidedly more energetic than an ordinary maths lesson. </p>&#13; &#13; <p>Describing his current work, James enthuses “I'm looking at the extremely fast flow that you get when two bubbles pop together to form one bubble. It's too fast to see in experiments and too fast for computers to model, but nothing is too fast for maths!”</p>&#13; &#13; <p>And this is the whole point of the HE Getaway – to give young people inspiring university experiences and introduce them to scholars who rhapsodize about their subjects.</p>&#13; &#13; <p>“I love doing these events”, says James, “maths is often seen as abstract and irrelevant, but playing games as we have today, can I hope, make students care about tough concepts like conditional probability and game theory. This group rose to the challenge and I was delighted to hear so many of them say they were interested in taking maths further.”</p>&#13; &#13; <p>A tour of Emmanuel College and a physics taster session at the Cavendish Laboratory completed an action-packed day. ֱ̽event was part of an <a href="https://www.undergraduate.study.cam.ac.uk/find-out-more/widening-participation/he-partnership">HE partnership programme</a>, in this instance between the Universities of Cambridge and Bedfordshire, which aims to raise aspirations among Year 9 – 11 students and give them an inspiring taste of higher education. </p>&#13; &#13; <p>As part of the partnership, a group of students from Cambridgeshire and Peterborough visited the ֱ̽ of Bedfordshire’s campus, where their programme included a workshop exploring computer game design. Both groups also took part in a team-building, problem-solving adventure day which included climbing trials and a rafting race. </p>&#13; &#13; <p>Project Coordinator, Matt Diston, said </p>&#13; &#13; <p>“We’ve developed a fantastic collaborative relationship with the ֱ̽ of Bedfordshire over the last four years which means we can provide inspiring opportunities for schools in both areas. It’s really important for them to understand why these rules don’t apply to tuition fee loans.”</p> <p>At <a href="http://www.elycollege.com/" target="_blank">Ely College</a>, IAG Co-Ordinator Wendy Barnes introduces the session to Year 9 students: “Matt’s here to tell you the facts,” she explains. “You need the truth and the facts about university so that you can make good decisions when the time comes.”</p> <p> ֱ̽students work in small groups to brainstorm their ideas about how much university will cost and the different ways people pay for it.</p> <p>“So we owe the Government £27,000 – how do we feel?” Matt asks the class, after a discussion of the real costs of university.</p> <p>Scared, some say.  It feels like a trick.</p> <p>Some see it as a good deal. “What you get for it – that’s all right, though. You can get more money for your job.”</p> <p>“And if you’ve done university you’ve got a better chance of getting a job,” his classmate agrees.</p> <p>Matt explains that repayments are based on income. If you don’t earn more than £21,000, you don’t have to repay the loan.  Some find this reassuring, though others are shocked.  “It’s not fair – what about the lazy people? We could work hard and pay it back, and they won’t – that would be really unfair.”</p> <p>“What if I never earn more than £21,000, for the next 30 years,” one student asks. This gives Matt a chance to remind the group that, since the average graduate starting salary is around £25,000, staying under the repayment threshold for a whole career might be a challenge.</p> <p>Some minds turn to cunning plans to escape repayment. “What if I go and hide from the taxman abroad?” To the Cayman Islands, to Australia, to Afghanistan...”They will find you,” says Matt. “And then there’s a special house with bars on the windows they’ll take you to – that might be a bit extreme, just to get out of repaying a student loan!”</p> <p>“What if I fake my own death?” asks another creative individual. “Again – possibly a bit overkill!” Matt responds - It’s your loan and you’re responsible for paying it back. It can’t be passed on to another member of your family and it can’t be inherited if you get hit by a bus.”</p> <p>“There might be a million reasons not to go to university, but we don’t want you to say ‘I’m not going to go because I don’t have the money’,” Matt concludes.</p> <p>“For you guys, it doesn’t matter if you’re from a single parent family, or if your dad is Sir Alan Sugar. You’re all entitled to the full cost of your course as a loan, rather than having to pay it up front.</p> <p>“You are entitled to this help if you choose it.”</p> <p>•  HE Partnership is a collaborative project continuing the ֱ̽ of Cambridge’s work with local schools initiated under Aimhigher.  There is a particular focus within the programme on younger learners.</p> </div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-content-summary field-type-text-with-summary field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><p><p> ֱ̽benefits of higher education include better access to jobs, a rewarding social life, and the opportunity to live independently. A talk on university finance was followed by two traditional undergraduate favourites, a quiz and a film night.</p>&#13; <p>“ ֱ̽news has made student fees seem worse than they actually are,” commented Isaac, from <a href="https://www.cromwellcc.org.uk/" target="_blank">Cromwell Community College,</a> Chatteris. “ ֱ̽talk made it really clear – you’ll pay 9p in the pound once you’re earning enough. That’s much less scary.”</p>&#13; <p>Day two of the Getaway saw the students exploring the campus, guided by current UEA undergraduates Hope and Joseph, before tackling some undergraduate-style seminars.</p>&#13; <p>“ ֱ̽campus is much bigger than I thought,” said Jade, who came on the Getaway from <a href="http://www.thomasclarksonacademy.org/page/default.asp?title=Home&amp;pid=1" target="_blank">Thomas Clarkson Academy</a>, Wisbech. “I prefer this to somewhere like Cambridge, where the university buildings are spread through the town.”</p>&#13; <p>Isaac and Sollie appreciated the opportunity to see undergraduate accommodation, which at UEA can include groups of study-bedrooms arranged round a shared kitchen. “Everything you need is provided,” said Isaac. “It looks really social.”</p>&#13; <p> ֱ̽ ֱ̽ of Cambridge HE Partnership programme organises several HE Getways each year. This event was for students interested in the Humanities, so having seen the campus and key facilities such as the library and the <a href="http://sifa.uea.ac.uk/" target="_blank">Sainsbury Institute for Art</a>, the students took part in several classes led by UEA academics.</p>&#13; <p>Dr B J Epstein from the School of Literature, Drama &amp; Creative Writing led a class on Picture Books and the Boundaries of Literature. “That was unexpected,” said Jodie, from Peterborough’s <a href="http://www.qka.education" target="_blank">Voyager Academy,</a> whose group was set the task of critically analysing ֱ̽Red Tree, by Australian illustrator and author <a href="https://www.shauntan.net/" target="_blank">Shaun Tan</a>. </p>&#13; <p>Other groups tackled Green Eggs and Ham by Dr Seuss, Grandfather’s Journey by Allen Say, and Dr Xargle’s Book of Earthlets, by Jeanne Willis and Tony Ross.</p>&#13; <p>How did the students feel about reading children’s books? “I thought it showed how different and varied the things you can study at university can be,” Sollie said.</p>&#13; <p>Prof. Catherine Rowett led a session on ‘Heaps, Classes and Other Tricky Borders,’ which considered classic Greek philosophical dilemmas including Zeno’s Paradoxes, and Dr Wendy McMahon finished the day with a discussion on ‘ ֱ̽United States of America: Borders of Identity.’</p>&#13; <p>“We design the HE Getaway to give students an experience of university life in microcosm,” explains Matt Diston, HE Partnership Co-Ordinator for the ֱ̽ of Cambridge. “We hope that over the two days participants will have some of their worries about university addressed, whether it’s the cost of tuition fees, the fear of being left out in the rush to make new friends, or worries about keeping up with the course, and that they will head home with renewed confidence in their abilities.”</p>&#13; <p>“This has shown that I will be able to make friends really easily,” said Isaac, who hopes to study History and Politics. “I’m looking forward to the social side of ֱ̽. And I’m not daunted by the idea of spending 20 hours a week in the library either.”</p>&#13; <p>“This HE Getaway event with Cambridge ֱ̽ is a great partnership opportunity and one which we’re proud to host,” said Liz Ferguson, UEA Outreach Officer. “We aim to work collaboratively with other Higher Education Institutions in our region to help local young people make an informed choice about their HE options.”</p>&#13; <p>“We are excited to welcome students from Cambridgeshire to experience our campus and get a taste of university life,” she added.</p>&#13; </div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-content-summary field-type-text-with-summary field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><p><p> ֱ̽challenge: provide an experience of university in just two days - with the help of ֱ̽Cat in the Hat, a millet seed and Thetford Forest.</p>&#13; </p></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-content-quote field-type-text-long field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even">it showed how different and varied the things you can study at university can be</div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-content-quote-name field-type-text field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even">Sollie</div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-image-desctiprion field-type-text field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even">Outdoor Laser Tag breaks the ice</div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-cc-attribute-text field-type-text-long field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><p><a href="http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/3.0/"><img alt="" src="/sites/www.cam.ac.uk/files/80x15.png" style="width: 80px; height: 15px;" /></a></p>&#13; <p>This work is licensed under a <a href="http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/3.0/">Creative Commons Licence</a>. Metalcraft supplies components to the nuclear power industry and makes precision medical equipment, working mainly in stainless steel and aluminium. “Very few fabricators have the skills to work at this level,” Paul explained. “We are competing on our history, our reputation, our quality control, and the skill of our craftsmen.”</p>&#13; <p>“ ֱ̽lack of skilled craftsmen is one of the biggest barrier’s to our growth as a business. FE College, 6th Form College, and apprenticeships are all available to you. Some of these routes might take you straight into work; some might lead you to university later on.</p>&#13; <p>“We hope you’ll start to connect the dots,” Matt added. “Why you’re studying the subjects you are at school, and the opportunities this can lead to.
