Expansion of Get In programme aimed at under-represented students

Undergraduates receive an annual Get In award to ensure they can make the most out of Cambridge life, and Master’s students receive a Studentship, managed by the Cambridge Trust, to enable them to take up their offer at Cambridge. To date 82 students have received Get In studentships and awards.

Ultimately, Get In aims to support every socio-economically disadvantaged Master’s and undergraduate student from an under-represented ethnic minority background. While there is still some way to go, the expansion of the initiative has enabled many more under-represented students to receive support. Get In has been entirely funded through generous donations from individuals.

Cambridge alumnus Supraj Rajagopalan recently donated £1 million to Get In, the largest contribution to date. His generosity has almost doubled the number of Get In Cambridge recipients from 30 in 2021 to 52 in 2022.

“Get In Cambridge is a fantastic and inspirational programme that I'm pleased to support," he commented. "Its scope of encouraging applications, as well as supporting students when they're here, is key to helping address systemic disadvantage both before and during their Cambridge experience. My Cambridge experience was transformative, and I believe in giving back to benefit future generations. I was exposed to incredible role models across Cambridge, and I believe the Get In programme offers today's students a wide range of role models at all levels — fellow students, College and ̽��ֱ�� leaders, and alumni."

Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Education Professor Bhaskar Vira said:

"We are incredibly grateful for such generosity from donors to Get In Cambridge, which represents a significant contribution to our continued efforts to address the under-representation of ethnic minority communities amongst our student community. Thanks to the support that we have received, we have been able to almost double the number of awards allocated. We are particularly pleased that we have been able to support students who are keen to continue their academic journeys to postgraduate level, with studentships for Master's students, as this is increasingly becoming the 'broken' pipeline in terms of financial support for students who wish to progress to higher degrees."

Of the 52 students who became part of the Get In community this year, 12 are studying for Master’s and 40 are undergraduates. ̽��ֱ��awards have had a transformational effect. Ahmad Hayat, from Newcastle, is studying for a Master’s in Law. He says:

“As a British Pakistani student, I have to admit that I was initially intimidated by the idea of studying at Cambridge. I had always assumed that it was a place for elite members of society and I wasn't sure if I belonged here. However, the Get In Cambridge studentship that I received has helped me to continue my journey through higher education and has given me the opportunity to prove to myself that I am capable of achieving my goals. Financially, it has made the course much more manageable, allowing me to focus on my studies without having to worry about the financial burden. It has also made a significant difference to my experiences in Cambridge as it has allowed me to take advantage of various extracurricular activities that I may not have otherwise been able to do.”

Get In Cambridge launched in 2019 as a targeted outreach and social media campaign to reach potential applicants from under-represented ethnic minority groups. ̽��ֱ��campaigns have reached millions of prospective applicants and won a number of prestigious social media awards. Since 2019, Cambridge has also seen a significant increase of the proportion of students from under-represented backgrounds successfully applying, in no small part due to the financial provision available from Get In Cambridge.

Pioneering Cambridge Campaign reaches record US$2 billion

Calculated at the average exchange rate for each year of the ten-year campaign, a total of US$1.1 billion (£649 million) was raised by the ̽��ֱ�� and US$905 million (£523 million) by the Colleges.

2010 – 11 has also been a record year for Cambridge with US$215 million (£135 million at current exchange rates) raised.

These figures do not include more than US$640 million (£390 million) of legacy pledges, which will, in turn, create a significant pipeline of benefactions in the future.

̽��ֱ��Campaign has attracted broad support from alumni and friends globally and 54,000 alumni, more than a quarter of the total, have contributed at least once to a College and more than 8,000 have contributed at least once to the ̽��ֱ��

Acknowledging this success, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sir Leszek Borysiewicz, said: “This is a remarkable achievement. I pay tribute to my predecessors, Alec Broers and Alison Richard, who saw the need for such a Campaign and then led it with such distinction. ̽��ֱ�� ̽��ֱ�� and the Colleges are immensely grateful to all our donors who have given to this Campaign so generously.

“It is now the right time to declare that the 800^th Campaign is complete. But, paraphrasing Churchill, this is simply “the end of the beginning”. ̽��ֱ��need for philanthropic funding to sustain Cambridge’s position as one of the best universities in the world has never been greater. To be a global leader in education and research requires Cambridge to continue to be a leader in philanthropy. We are beginning, immediately, to prepare for a new, even more ambitious Campaign”.

Bill Janeway, Co-Chairman of the Campaign Board and Senior Advisor to Warburg Pincus, said: “In a time of economic challenge and global competition, the case for philanthropy and fundraising to support Britain’s great universities has never been stronger. Today we celebrate Cambridge’s leadership role in philanthropy and express our enormous gratitude to our benefactors.”

Fellow Co-Chairman and Senior Advisor to Morgan Stanley International Sir David Walker said: “Our alumni and friends in the UK and internationally have responded with generosity and vision to the call of this Campaign. They understand the need for sustained investment if teaching and research are to remain cornerstones of Cambridge’s excellence and ability to seed the world with ideas.”

Diversity and understanding are recognised by CUSU awards

̽��ֱ��awards were presented by Terry Ndee, Associate Director Trusts and Foundations at Cambridge ̽��ֱ�� Development Office and member of the ̽��ֱ��’s Race Equality Advisory Group, at a ceremony held in Keynes Hall, King’s College.

In his speech, Mr Ndee underlined the importance of tolerance and understanding in matters of religious belief and spoke of the ̽��ֱ��’s determination to foster good relations between different faith groups.

̽��ֱ��CUSU Award for Promoting Diversity went to Zishan Jiwa, a second year clinical medicine student at Sidney Sussex College. Zishan, who was brought up in Peterborough, has developed a number of initiatives both within the ̽��ֱ�� and within local communities.

He has been commended for his strong support for the work of Cambridge ̽��ֱ�� Faiths Forum (CUFF) in promoting understanding that goes beyond mere “brittle” tolerance, including the development of information packs which set out the principles of ten major faiths.

He said: “As I grew up, I became passionate about sharing with others the beauty I saw in my religion, Islam. This drew me to engage in dialogue between people from varied religious and cultural backgrounds and is how some of my deepest friendships were forged.

“It doesn't take long, once we step past our socially contrived boundaries, before people start to connect on a very human level and realise that we are really not so different. ̽��ֱ��diversity within our cultures, languages and personalities are, in fact, what give us ‘colour’ and are really a treasure to be explored and celebrated.”

Zishan has also organised a leaflet of multicultural vegetarian recipes, based on a culinary event attended by almost 100 students from different faiths and partially funded by Cambridge City Council. It will be published later this year with all proceeds going to charity.

CUSU Awards for Promoting Understanding were presented to both Jonathan Gilmour, a third year theology student at St John’s College, and Ahmed Al-Khaja, a third year economics student at Jesus College.

Jonathan Gilmour’s interest in Judaism led him to stand as Secretary and later Inter-faith Officer for the Jewish Society. A practising Christian, Jonathan has served as a link between the Jewish and Christian student communities and has encouraged dynamic dialogue between the two groups, helping members to identify shared and distinct beliefs.

He said: “While I am not Jewish, I have a deep love for the Jewish people and Judaism, so I thought I should get involved.”

In 2006 and 2007 Ahmed, who is an international student from Bahrain, organised Cambridge Multifaith Christmas events in Great St Mary’s Church, with speakers from the Christian and Muslim faiths. ̽��ֱ��events, which were well attended, were held in collaboration with CUFF and the ̽��ֱ�� Chaplaincy. It is hoped that this will become a regular feature of the calendar.

Ahmed, who is former Secretary of Cambridge ̽��ֱ�� Islamic Society, said: “CUFF is doing a great job at macro level and we all have a responsibility at the micro level to do what we can to promote better understanding between the different faiths represented in Cambridge.”

̽��ֱ��CUSU Anti-Racism Campaign Awards were established by A Alim Marvasti, second year student of clinical medicine, who was CUSU Anti-Racism Officer in 2006-2007, in conjunction with Kaunain Nurani, current CUSU Anti-Racism Officer and second year English student (Newnham College) and Junior Juma Penge, current CUSU Black Students Officer and second year English student (Homerton College).

New library at Judge Business School opens

£137k in donations from the business school’s alumni, other well wishers and friends of Cambridge ̽��ֱ�� were combined with a grant from the Science Research Investment Fund, facilitated by the Cambridge ̽��ֱ�� Development Office, to enable a major renovation project in 2006. ̽��ֱ��total project budget of £705k provided much needed additional space through the installation of a mezzanine gallery in the existing gallery.

̽��ֱ��School’s library has seen impressive growth since it was first opened in 1996 and now boasts the capability of supporting over 600 members from the School, including MBA, final year Tripos (MST), PhD, five MPhil and two distance learning courses, as well as members from a range of departments elsewhere in the ̽��ֱ��. ̽��ֱ��mezzanine gallery will house the School’s expanding collection and provide additional space for users.

̽��ֱ��official ceremony will be led by Professor Arnoud De Meyer, Director, Judge Business School and Professor Dame Sandra Dawson, Master of Sidney Sussex College, ̽��ֱ�� of Cambridge.

Professor Arnoud De Meyer said, “We are thrilled to mark the completion of this project, research is at the very heart of the School, our library is a vital “information gateway” where interdisciplinary collaboration and the dissemination of ideas can take place. That so many of our alumni and friends provided such generous donations is testament to the school’s ethos of a virtuous circle of life-long learning.”

̽��ֱ��Judge Business School, ̽��ֱ�� of Cambridge, opens its restructured and refurbished mezzanine library this Friday 26 January.
