'Lightning McGreen' and 'Sustainable Hulk' lead Cambridge E-bus revolution

Alongside the two famed children's animation and comic book-inspired characters, the names 'Greenhopper', 'Net-Zero Hero', 'Pollution Solution', ' ̽��ֱ��Peregreen Falcon', 'Eco Eddie' and ' ̽��ֱ��Green Clean Machine', were also chosen for the fleet from a selection offered by students from the ̽��ֱ�� of Cambridge Primary School in a bus naming competition.

̽��ֱ��competition invited students from the school in the ̽��ֱ��-built neighbourhood of Eddington to unleash their imagination. Participants were encouraged to consider factors such as the sustainability benefits and innovative features of the new buses in their naming choices. This initiative aimed to engage young minds in a fun and educational way, while also contributing to the enhancement of public transport within the local community.

Over the past few weeks, the competition captured the attention and enthusiasm of a large number of Eddington school children, attracting well over 100 entries. Their creativity and thoughtfulness were truly remarkable, making the selection process a challenging yet enjoyable task for the judging panel.

̽��ֱ��final selection was made by a panel of representatives from the ̽��ֱ�� of Cambridge and Whippet’s parent company, Ascendal Group. ̽��ֱ��panel carefully evaluated each entry and assessed the names based on originality, relevance, and the potential to resonate with the local community.

“We were overwhelmed by the incredible response from the young participants,” said Nicoletta Gennaro, Ascendal’s Group Head of Marketing. “ ̽��ֱ��names suggested by these talented children were not only impressive but also reflected their deep understanding of our community’s values and aspirations. We are thrilled to involve them in shaping the identity of our new electric buses.”

Winners of the competition received special recognition at a dedicated award ceremony at the ̽��ֱ�� of Cambridge Primary School, where they received prizes from representatives from Whippet and the ̽��ֱ��.

“We believe that involving the youth in important community projects like this fosters a sense of belonging and ownership,” added Mike Davies, Transport Manager at the ̽��ֱ�� of Cambridge. “Through their contribution, we hope to inspire future generations to actively participate in shaping the development of our city and how we move.”

Both Whippet and the ̽��ֱ�� of Cambridge would like to extend their sincere gratitude to all the participating students and staff at the ̽��ֱ�� of Cambridge Primary School for their invaluable contributions to the competition. ̽��ֱ��event marks a significant milestone in promoting creativity, community engagement, and the importance of sustainable public transport.

'Lightning McGreen' and the ' ̽��ֱ��Sustainable Hulk' will lead a new fleet of nine electric buses plying routes travelled by students and staff across the ̽��ֱ�� of Cambridge on the Universal bus route, scheduled to be put into service later this year by bus operator Whippet.

Proposals for the regeneration of Old Press/ Mill Lane receive strong support

During March and April, a full public consultation was held on their proposals for a masterplan that will transform an important quarter of the city and draws residents, students and visitors into the area. ̽��ֱ��masterplan was originally called for in the City Council’s Supplementary Planning Document of 2010 and includes the creation of new areas of public open space on the riverfront and provides exciting retail and leisure opportunities.

̽��ֱ��consultation included two days of public exhibitions held at the university Centre on Granta Place in late March. Key members of the project team were present to answer any questions about the scheme, and it gave the opportunity to feed back to the ̽��ֱ�� and the Colleges on the proposals, including key aspects such as the creation of public open space on the riverfront through the demolition of the Laundress Lane Warehouse.

̽��ֱ��results of the feedback have shown that there has been strong support in general for the proposals. In responding to the consultation questionnaire, 95% felt that the exhibition had been useful, with 90% agreeing that regeneration of the area was important. Importantly, having reviewed the plans, 79% of respondents wanted to see the creation of a new area of public open space through the removal of the Laundress Lane Warehouse – this option was first reviewed in the 2010 Supplementary Planning Document that called for a Masterplan. In addition, although in the city council’s control not the ̽��ֱ��’s, 81% supported the removal of the boatshed on Granta Place – both of these proposals open up public access to the river and significantly improve views over Coe Fen.

Duncan Maskell, the ̽��ֱ��’s Senior Pro-Vice-Chancellor, said, “We are very pleased that, overall, the proposals in the Masterplan were supported by 77% of respondents – this is a very high number for regeneration projects and reflects the public and stakeholders’ desire to see high quality regeneration of the area.”

This masterplan, which sets out general development parameters, will be followed by full planning applications that provide more detail around traffic control and architectural treatment. ̽��ֱ��first of these full applications will come from Pembroke College later this year and will provide more details about the block bounded by Mill Lane and Little St Mary’s Lane.

Sainsbury Laboratory named Britain's best building

̽��ֱ��Stirling Prize is the UK's most prestigious architecture prize. It is awarded to the project built or designed in Britain "which has made the greatest contribution to the evolution of architecture in the past year."

̽��ֱ��building was described as a "timeless piece of architecture" and an "exceptional building."

Judges highlighted the Laboratory's blending of private and public space, the flexibility of design that allows for evolving and changing scientific needs and its integration within the sensitive site of the ̽��ֱ�� Botanic Garden.

Lord Sainsbury said: "I am delighted that Stanton Williams has won the RIBA Stirling Prize for the Sainsbury Laboratory, in competition with some outstanding buildings. I am also very proud to be associated with their inspiring building which sets a new standard for laboratory design and blends in beautifully with the historic Botanic Gardens."

̽��ֱ��Director of Estate Management for the ̽��ֱ��, Michael Bienias, said: "I'm delighted that the Sainsbury Laboratory has received the prestigious Stirling Prize. More than 100 members of the Royal Forestry Society visited last week for a Joint Field Meeting Estate visit.

̽��ֱ��Royal Forestry Society membership includes woodland owners, land managers, foresters, students, conservationists, arborists, landscapers, timber merchants, ecologists and keen amateurs, all united by an interest and love of trees.

̽��ֱ��morning started with Rachel Buckingham-Howard the ̽��ֱ��’s Rural Surveyor providing an overview of the ̽��ֱ��’s Estate at Madingley.

This was followed by the ̽��ֱ��’s Forestry Consultants Lockhart Garratt giving a tour of Madingley Wood, a Site of Special Scientific Interest.

̽��ֱ��visit gave the Royal Forestry Society a unique chance to visit one of the longest studied ancient woods in Europe with research records going back over 350 years.

It is closed to members of the public but is used by ̽��ֱ�� Departments for specialist woodland research.

̽��ֱ��guests were shown various types of woodland management being carried out. Discussions ranged from how best to grow good quality Oak and Ash sustainably for timber production, concern over impact of Acute Oak Decline on oak, how to manage the ground Flora and Fauna for maximum benefit for wildlife, how to manage rare Elms that are growing in the wood with a view of trying to increase the local population with apparent ‘resistance’ with Dutch Elm disease and whilst maintaining the wood as a valuable research resource.

̽��ֱ��visitors then moved on to the 800 Wood, adjacent to Madingley Wood, which was planted to mark the ̽��ֱ��’s landmark anniversary, to see how this young, wood only three years from the initial planting, had blossomed into a beautiful green space which welcomes members of the public all through the year.

Discussions took place about the design, the links with the adjacent Ancient Wood and the excellent development of seedlings that have now flourished into young trees.

̽��ֱ��visit then moved to the adjacent American Cemetery, formerly part of the

Madingley Estate which was donated by the ̽��ֱ�� last century, where they were treated to a tour of the beautifully landscaped and cared for grounds, looking at the Japanese Pagoda Tree avenue, the layout and maintenance of the site as well learning of its historical background and importance.

In the afternoon the guests were given guided tours of Madingley Hall gardens which have been sensitively restored in recent decades by the Gardening Team at the Hall. In particular, members were invited to look at the two recently restored 18^th Century vistas, the Capability Brown east vista and the earlier north vista. These two restorations have been achieved through the close partnership between ̽��ֱ�� Estate Management and the Institute of Continuing Education at Madingley Hall.

Other highlights included enjoying the many fine specimen trees, some unusual and the replanting programme to ensure this historic landscape is carried forward for future generations. ̽��ֱ��tour was completed by viewing the topiary garden and the hazel tunnel in the landscaped Walled garden.

Rachel Buckingham-Howard commented. “It was a wonderful experience to be able to share the ̽��ֱ��’s woodlands with Forestry and Ecological experts as well as keen amateurs all passionately interested in woodland and environmental management.”

Ceremony marks start of work on key research building

̽��ֱ��Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sir Leszek Borysiewicz (pictured right), was guest of honour at a start-on-site ceremony attended by representatives of the design and construction team, benefactors and senior ̽��ֱ�� academics and staff.

They were welcomed by Chris Tredget (pictured second left), Managing Director of Willmott Dixon, the main contractor, which has worked on a number of significant ̽��ֱ�� projects including the nearby Hauser Forum and Centre for the Physics of Medicine.

̽��ֱ��Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy is committed to making significant advances in the synthesis, processing and patterning of materials to deliver enhanced performance, and addressing issues of sustainability and the scarcity of resources.

It is currently spread across five separate buildings in the historic city centre, some dating back to the 1870s, which are unsuitable for modern scientific research. There have been plans to move to purpose-built accommodation at West Cambridge for many years but funding for the new building, which derives from a number of sources, has only recently been confirmed from a number of sources.

Designed by the international Architectural Practice firm NBBJ, the building meets the challenge of accommodating the broad range of research fields the Department covers, from large scale processing of metals through to nanotechnology, chemistry and the development of medical materials.

̽��ֱ��new facility will contain a mix of laboratories, support facilities, offices and social space with a total gross floor area of ten thousand two hundred square metres.

It will include an electron microscope facility built on a two-metre deep concrete slab to eliminate vibration and electro-magnetic interference from external sources. It is set to be one of the best-adapted places for electron microscopy in the world. Indeed the whole building has been designed around the nature of the instruments needed for this type of research, and with a view to being adaptable for future technological developments and research needs.

Lead architect Rebecca Mortimore said: “ ̽��ֱ��design of the building has been guided by primary goals identified during the briefing stage. It will be a welcoming, legible building, allowing the legacy of the department and identity of the individual research groups to be expressed. ̽��ֱ��building will facilitate collaboration between happy occupants and integrate teaching with research.
It will balance performance and flexibility, allowing room to grow and adapt whilst enabling science and research.”

Professor Lindsay Greer, Head of the Department (pictured second right), said: “ ̽��ֱ��project team have done a great job in meeting our requirements and we are very excited at the prospect of seeing our new home rise out of the ground.”

Michael Bienias, Director of Estate Management for the ̽��ֱ�� (pictured left), praised the collaborative work of the Project Team in reaching this stage in this complex project.

In addition to research, the building will incorporate teaching of undergraduate years 3 and 4, masters and doctorates.

Uniting the Department together in one building will enable the development of a highly integrated research facility, promoting better communication and reaction.

̽��ֱ��relocation to the ̽��ֱ��’s growing Science and Technology site at West Cambridge will enable a valuable increase in cross-disciplinary work with neighbours in the Institute for Manufacturing, Centre for Nanoscience, the Cavendish Laboratory, the Computer Laboratory, Electrical Engineering, the Whittle Laboratory, Cambridge Enterprise and the Vet School.

In addition to major underwriting by the ̽��ֱ��, the building has received generous funding from the Wolfson Foundation, ̽��ֱ��Ann D Foundation, the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths and the Worshipful Company of Armourers and Brasiers.

Construction is scheduled for completion in early Autumn 2012.

̽��ֱ��survey, now in its ninth year, records how workers in the district travel to their place of employment.

And Cambridge ̽��ֱ�� continues to lead the way in staff opting to get on their bike with some 39 per cent of journeys to work made by cycling - opposed to an average of 17 per cent across the other workplaces surveyed.

Only 22 per cent of journeys were made by people driving alone to work – compared to 50 per cent from other organisations taking part.

Paul Milliner, Senior Planning Officer for the ̽��ֱ��’s Estate Management department, said: “ ̽��ֱ�� ̽��ֱ�� continues to support sustainable travel, and a cycle to work scheme was introduced in 2009 as well as discounts on train season ticket fares. ̽��ֱ��Travel for Work Survey results show that our measures are effective.”

As well as the high levels of cycling, the 2009 totals show that 11 per cent of journeys to work were made by walking, nine per cent by bus, seven per cent by car sharing and five per cent by train.

In total, 74 organisations took part in the survey

̽��ֱ��Travel for Work Survey also looked at travel times for ̽��ֱ�� staff. Most journeys (41 per cent) fell into the 1-20 minutes bracket with 21-40 minute journeys accounting for 36 per cent of staff’s time.

Pedal power is still overwhelmingly the preferred method of transport for ̽��ֱ�� of Cambridge staff – according to the 2009 Travel for Work Survey.

Cycling to mark the 800th

̽��ֱ��90-mile long route was divided into six legs with three members of staff cycling each leg on the ̽��ֱ�� Messenger Service 800th Anniversary-branded bicycles, attracting a great deal of attention and good natured banter along the way.

Each member of staff had raised sponsorship for the event, with the added twist that all sponsors had the chance to win a 45 minute flying lesson kindly donated by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Alison Richard, for guessing how long in total it would take all of the teams take to complete the full 90 mile course.

Here's what some those who took part had to say about the day:
"It was a great day, with an early start on the first leg from Oxford, with Alan Baldock and Adam Gardner, plus the extra five miles we cycled from the Park and Ride! It was very enjoyable, everybody on route taking time to talk to us, and look on in amazement as we cycled along on the heavy UMS bikes, with our flags waving, and overtaken by people on roller blades at one point! All very well organised by Alan, who kept everybody's spirits up, not that it was needed because everybody was in good spirits throughout the whole day!" Nigel Reynolds, Reprographics
