探花直播探花直播 of Cambridge took this action to protect the right of students to graduate and to prevent unauthorised access to buildings that contain sensitive, confidential information. This was never about preventing lawful protest. 探花直播injunction safeguards a very small part of the 探花直播 estate from occupations that would prevent graduations from going ahead. It also protects the right for our staff to work. Protests occur regularly at the 探花直播, including a rally held immediately outside Great St Mary鈥檚 church during the graduation ceremony on 1 March while an injunction covering the Senate House, a few yards away, was in place.

探花直播Judge, Mr Justice Soole, in his judgment, outlines the balance of the different interests struck by the injunction order:

90. I am also satisfied that the proposed injunction does provide a fair balance between the rights of all parties. 探花直播protesters and the campaign are left with ample opportunities and ability to protest their cause in Cambridge; and the 探花直播 is enabled to carry on its administrative and ceremonial work in these core buildings and spaces. 探花直播fairness of the resulting balance was in my judgment well demonstrated by the events on the graduation day of 1 March, following the Order of Fordham J.

The聽探花直播鈥檚聽decision to bring the proceedings聽was聽based entirely on an assessment of the direct action threatened on the 探花直播 and had nothing whatsoever to do with the particular race, religion, beliefs or cause of those responsible for previous occupations.聽

探花直播Judge pointed out that the 探花直播 had carried out a聽careful, fair and measured analysis and had full and proper regard to its various duties under statute and the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR).

探花直播Judge was also content that students and others could express their opinions and beliefs elsewhere in Cambridge and its city centre:

92鈥�.聽 As to vigils and the like, there are ample other places for these to be carried out. I do not accept that in this or any respect the proposed injunction has the chilling effect which is alleged. Nor do I consider that the simple wearing of supportive and/or emblematic badges or clothing would put anyone at risk of breach of the proposed injunction.

探花直播following reassurances can be given to the students (or other attendees) with regards to the effect of the injunction:

探花直播探花直播 is fully committed to freedom of speech and the right to protest within the law.
探花直播injunction is limited to two small sites: (i) Greenwich House (ii) 探花直播Old Schools, Senate House, and Senate House Yard. 探花直播injunction does not extend to the 探花直播鈥檚 wider estate or College land.
探花直播injunction does not prevent students or others discussing protest or protest- related events.
探花直播injunction does not prohibit people from entering or remaining at Greenwich House, Senate House or the Yard if they have been given the 探花直播鈥檚 permission to be there. For example, during graduations.
探花直播order聽makes no restriction on using聽or displaying聽legal聽slogans or symbols anywhere聽on 探花直播聽property. For example, wearing a pin badge which bears a slogan or symbol, or displaying a flag or sign.
Aside from the injunction, graduands are required to continue to adhere to the rules on academical dress for graduation congregations and to observe the Rules of Behaviour.
An individual with permission to be at the sites covered by the injunction may be asked to leave the property by a Proctor or other officer or staff member of the 探花直播 if they act in breach of the rules on academical dress, the Rules of Behaviour or the Code of Practice on Freedom of Speech.
If someone who has been given permission to be at the sites covered by the injunction refuses to leave when asked, it is possible that their actions may breach the injunction. However, this is not an automatic consequence. This will depend on the precise acts of the individual and whether the acts are prohibited under the injunction.
If a person breaches the terms of the injunction, it will be for the 探花直播 to decide whether to ask the Court for permission to bring proceedings against an individual. To breach the injunction would be a civil offence rather than a criminal offence.
探花直播injunction does not prohibit any student from making a request to hold an event or meeting on 探花直播 property in accordance with the Code of Practice on Freedom of Speech and the room bookings procedure.

探花直播探花直播 of Cambridge has been granted a precautionary injunction to prevent trespassing and related actions (e.g., blocking access to the sites named in the injunction). 探花直播sites affected by this order are:

Senate House (including the Yard)

Greenwich House

An update on occupations from the 探花直播 Registrary

Protests within the law are an important part of this principle. Where we draw the line is when these protests break the law and/or disrupt the activity and lives of students and staff at the 探花直播, who also have a right to pursue their work, study and daily lives in a safe and supportive environment.

Late last year the graduation of more than 500 students was disrupted by a small group who occupied part of the 探花直播. 探花直播impact of this occupation affected not only the students involved but also their friends and families, many of whom had travelled long distances to celebrate the special day. It also placed significant stress on the 探花直播 and College staff involved in organising and running the Congregation ceremonies. Following this disruption we received complaints from students who were graduating, their families and guests, and from Colleges.

This is why we are currently exploring legal options that will protect certain limited areas of the 探花直播, including Senate House and Senate House Yard, from future occupations so that we can hold the Congregations that our students and their families expect. 聽

This action does not restrict the important right to legal protest. There are many ways protests can take place and voices can be heard, but it does protect the right of other members of our community to graduate and for聽staff to carry out their work.

Like other universities, we also recently had an occupation of one of our 探花直播 buildings, which disrupted our ability to work in this building. Occupiers gained access to confidential material about research and staff. As an employer, we have a duty to protect the rights and wellbeing of those who work at the 探花直播. At the time, we were clear about our plans, and likely outcomes for those involved in the occupation.

In the past year we have attempted to keep an open dialogue with students who are taking part in protests, which has not been the case at all universities. Some groups have made it clear they intend to pursue further disruptive activity. If this is the case, we will act to protect student graduations, and to enable staff to carry out their daily work. Where laws and/or 探花直播 regulations are broken each case must be handled fairly and responsibly through established 探花直播 procedures.

Tributes paid to first British-Pakistani Head of House

Professor Ahmed, the first British-Pakistani Head of House, had a distinguished academic career centred on research interests in the physics and technology of nanoscale electronic devices, nanotechnology and electron beam lithography.聽Master of Corpus Christi College from 2000 to 2006, he remained actively involved as a Life Fellow and later an Honorary Fellow.

Born in Calcutta in 1936, after the partition of India Professor Ahmed and his family were forced聽to flee to Karachi in the newly formed Pakistan. 探花直播family later moved to London where Professor Ahmed read Electrical Engineering at Imperial College, graduating with a First Class degree. After a brief spell working for General Electric Company in Birmingham, he realised his passion was for research. Encouraged by a friend, he successfully applied for a PhD scholarship at King鈥檚 College Cambridge. After a formative sabbatical year in New York state where he worked at the Thomas J Watson Research Centre of IBM, he returned to Cambridge where his research activity grew rapidly.聽He moved to the Cavendish Laboratory where he joined the Department of Engineering and established the Microelectronics Research Centre, sponsored by Hitachi. In 1990, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, in 1992 he was promoted to Professor of Microelectronics, and in 1996 he was awarded a Doctor of Science degree from the 探花直播 of Cambridge.

Professor Ahmed died peacefully at home, surrounded by his wife and family on聽23 October 2024. He is survived by his wife, Anne; his children, Ayesha, Rehana and Imran; his grandchildren, Max, Jem, Keir and Maya; and his sister, Zubaida.
