Exotic and wonderful sounds come to Cambridge next week as Girton and St John鈥檚 colleges host one of the world鈥檚 best historical brass ensembles. 探花直播two performances of Claudio Monteverdi鈥檚 Vespers celebrate the 400th anniversary of this spectacular 17th century composition.
探花直播Vespers, published in Venice in 1610, feature sagbutts and cornets - the ancestors of modern trombones and trumpets - as well as baroque fiddles, violas, cellos, recorders, organs and harpsichords, plus a full choir and soloists.
探花直播line-up brings together leading names from the music world says Martin Ennis, conductor and Director of Music at Girton College:
鈥淲e鈥檝e been lucky enough to attract one of the world鈥檚 most renowned historical brass ensembles, the wonderfully titled 鈥楬is Majestys Sagbutts and Cornetts鈥 and the distinguished baroque violinist Margaret Faultless, who has led orchestras throughout the world; and our choir is drawn from the very best singers in the 探花直播.
鈥淚 think the combination of professional expertise and the talent and energy of our singers is going to make for thrilling performances of this extraordinarily powerful music.鈥
As part of the project, schoolchildren from Girton village will be getting up close and personal with the performers during a visit to the dress rehearsal, when they will also be able to try out their own voices in an interactive singing workshop.
探花直播concerts are on Friday, 23 April 2010 at 8pm in Girton College Hall, and on Saturday, 24 April 2010 at 8pm in St John鈥檚 College Chapel.
