探花直播 探花直播 is sad to announce the sudden death of Professor Peter Lipton on Sunday evening.

Professor Lipton was the Hans Rausing Professor and Head of the Department of the History and Philosophy of Science at the 探花直播 of Cambridge and a Fellow of King's College.

He was also a member of the Nuffield Council on Bioethics and chaired its working party on pharmacogenetics.

His philosophical interests included the structures of explanation and inference in science, the nature of scientific progress, social epistemology, science and religion and various topics in biomedical ethics.

He was the author of Inference to the Best Explanation (2nd edition, Routledge, 2004) and was the 2004 Medawar Prize Lecturer of the Royal Society.

Professor Ross Harrison, Provost of King's College said: 鈥淧eter Lipton became a fellow of King's in 1994. Both before and after he gained his chair, he was a committed and enthusiastic supervisor of undergraduates in Philosophy and was for a time Director of Studies.

鈥淗e was an energetic, willing, and useful member of the College Governing Body who sat on many college committees and was devoted to making things happen in several different aspects of college life.鈥

He leaves a wife, Diana, and two sons, Jonah and Jacob

探花直播funeral will take place on Wednesday 28th November at 2.15pm at Cambridge City Crematorium and Cemetery on Huntingdon Road. Peter will be buried in the Jewish section of the cemetery.

Rabbi Professor Marc Saperstein will lead the graveside service to which all are welcome. Please convene in the car park. Men will be offered head covering when they arrive at the cemetery; women need not cover their heads.

All those present are invited to return with the family afterwards to the Dining Hall, King's College Cambridge, where tea and cake will be served, and Jacob and Jonah Lipton will repeat their eulogies for those unable to hear them at the cemetery.

探花直播family have requested no flowers. Those wishing to make a donation in Peter's memory are invited to contribute to a fund supporting undergraduate, graduate and post-doctoral research in the Whipple Museum of the History of Science, Department of History and Philosophy of Science.

A minute's silence was observed in his honour at Monday morning's 探花直播 Council meeting, led by the Vice-Chancellor.
