Cambridge residents are invited to discover the history on their doorsteps as part of Open Cambridge weekend when 探花直播 and College buildings and collections will go on show from Friday11听to Sunday听13 September 2009.

Open Cambridge is a weekend of tours, talks and open access in which families, local residents and community groups are encouraged to explore the spectacular architecture, fantastic art collections and beautiful gardens that lie behind 探花直播 and College walls.

All tours are free and range from taking a scenic stroll through Newnham College gardens, or learning about Jesus College鈥檚 sculpture collection, to discovering the history behind one of Cambridge鈥檚 most famous landmarks: King鈥檚 College Chapel. All of this and much more will be available to see in tours led by people that live and work in the historic buildings.

Also on offer is a series of public talks and debates about the 探花直播 and town in the past and present. Highlights include demystifying the Cambridge Collegiate system, and exploring how the 探花直播 and the town existed alongside each other 800 years ago.

A selection of libraries will be open throughout the weekend, showing some exciting collections including medieval manuscripts, early printed books and Winston Churchill鈥檚 papers. A community art exhibition will also be taking place at the Cambridge 探花直播 Press Pitt Building.

For a chance to visit several different Colleges in one day, the Bridge the Gap Charity Walk offers the opportunity to participate in a scenic 4.5 mile route which visits the beautiful grounds of nine Cambridge Colleges and takes people over many of the city鈥檚 bridges.

探花直播walk raises money for Arthur Rank Hospice Charity and Press Relief, the News Community Fund. Participants will also have the opportunity to explore the Zoology Museum and speak to the Cambridge Blue and Green Badge Tourist Guides about the history of Cambridge and its Colleges.

Penny Wilson, Head of Community Affairs at the 探花直播 of Cambridge says: 鈥淲e are delighted to offer so many tours and talks as part of the 2009 Open Cambridge programme. We want to welcome Cambridge residents to the 探花直播 and Colleges and in the 探花直播鈥檚 800th year, encourage people to share in our local heritage鈥.

Open Cambridge, which coincides with Heritage Open Days, offers local people the chance to enjoy a unique view of the buildings and grounds of the 探花直播 and Colleges and an insight into the work that is done there.
