As many as 30 members of the ̽»¨Ö±²¥ of Cambridge are contributing to Summer Daze 2008, an extensive programme of activities for children organised by the Children and Young People’s Participation Service (ChYpPS) at Cambridge City Council.
Hundreds of free drop-in events, which were launched last Wednesday, are being held on public open spaces located throughout the city in July and August. Activities are centred around sport, art and craft, music and drama – with the accent firmly on hands-on fun. Sessions are targeted at children ranging from toddlers to teenagers.
Members of the ̽»¨Ö±²¥ who will be running ChYpPS events over the summer include Outreach Officers and volunteers from student societies.
Members of the student group Architecture Sans Frontieres will be returning to Cambridge during their vacation to build shanty towns using scrap materials to foster an understanding of the challenges facing many communities in developing countries and an insight into the housing of most of the world’s urban population.
Sarah-Jane Harknett, Outreach Organiser for the Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, is leading sessions on basket-making, Egyptian mummies and shadow puppets. Joy Warde, Outreach Officer at the Department of Engineering, will be making rockets. Caroline Ward, Community Sports Officer, will be running sports sessions and Holly Margerison, Nutrition Communications Assistant at the Medical Research Council, will be offering sessions on fun with food.
Pictured above is Sarah-Jane Harknett working with a young Cambridge resident during a basket-making session last week.
Sarah-Jane said: "It was tremendously exciting to see how quickly children got to grips with basic weaving techniques to make a paper basket or cup. I was impressed by how long some of them spent producing some really lovely work. I look forward to seeing many more young people at sessions throughout the summer."
̽»¨Ö±²¥ ̽»¨Ö±²¥'s contribution to the Summer Daze 2008 programme was coordinated by Shelley Bolderson, Festivals and Outreach Officer, Community Affairs.
