Four new Pro-Vice-Chancellors have been appointed to work with Pro-Vice-Chancellor Professor Anthony Minson and Professor Alison Richard, the Vice-Chancellor of the 探花直播 of Cambridge.

Professor Andrew Cliff, Professor Ian Leslie, Professor Melveena McKendrick and Dr Kate Pretty will take up their new roles on 1 January 2004 and will be in post for a term of three years.

Professor Cliff is a Professor of Theoretical Geography and Fellow of Christ's College, Cambridge. He gained his BA at King鈥檚 College, London, his MA at Northwestern 探花直播 and his PhD and DSc at the 探花直播 of Bristol. Since 1972 Dr Cliff has been a member of the 探花直播 of Cambridge鈥檚 Department of Geography. His research focuses on spatial statistics and currently, on applications of spatial diffusion models on the spread of epidemic diseases. He has been given special responsibilities for Personnel issues.

Professor Ian Leslie was born in Canada and gained his first degree in Engineering Science and his Masters in Electrical Engineering at the university of Toronto. He came to the 探花直播 of Cambridge for his PhD and stayed on at the Computer Laboratory after completing it in 1983.

He was founder of Nemesys Research Ltd, which exploited the results of research work done in the department and co-founded Cplane Inc. Professor Leslie is currently Head of the Computer Laboratory at Cambridge and serves on the 探花直播 Council and a number of its committees. His special responsibilities will cover research issues.

Professor McKendrick is Professor of Spanish Golden-Age Literature, Culture and Society at the 探花直播鈥檚 Modern and Medieval Languages (MML) Faculty, she is also Chair of its Board. She gained her first degree at King's College, London and her PhD and LittD at Cambridge. She served on the 探花直播's General Board, was Senior Tutor at Girton Collge, Cambridge for seven years and is a Fellow of the British Academy. She will have special responsibility for Education issues.

Dr Pretty has been Principal of Homerton College, Cambridge since 1991 and was until recently Chair of the Council of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences. She is an archaeologist by training and also chairs the Archaeology and Anthropology Faculty Board for the 探花直播. She is Chairman of OCR, one of the three boards that offer school examinations in England and part of the 探花直播 of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate. Dr Pretty teaches Archaeology at Homerton and in the 探花直播. Dr Pretty鈥檚 remit as Pro-Vice Chancellor will include the major activities of the 探花直播 outside the academic work of the Faculties and Departments.
