Leading female scientists will share the secrets of their success and how to increase the role of women in engineering, science and technology at an event held at Lucy Cavendish College next month.

探花直播three prominent researchers will deliver talks and participate in a panel discussion at a mini-symposium on the development of personal strengths for scientists, aimed at students, researchers and employers.

Their talks will cover their own careers and how the development of personal strengths has affected the way they and their staff carry out their roles, including the creation of strong and effective teams and the accomplishment of creative and innovative research.

探花直播speakers will include:

  • Dr. Melanie Lee, the Executive Vice-President of Research and Development for UCB-Celltech, one of Europe's leading biotechnology research and development companies. Dr Lee is also Chair of Cancer Research Technology and Vice-Chair of Cancer Research UK.
  • Dr. Sabine Bahn, Director of the Cambridge Centre for Neuropsychiatric Research. Dr. Bahn is 探花直播 Lecturer in Biotechnology and founder of Psynova Ltd, a company which develops novel materials for indicating the presence of neuropsychiatric disorders.
  • Dr. Ruth Cameron, Reader in Polymers and Medical Materials, and Joint Director of the Cambridge Centre for Medical Materials.

探花直播symposium is being jointly held by Lucy Cavendish College, where Dr. Cameron and Dr. Bahn are both fellows, and Cambridge Association for Women in Science and Engineering (Cambridge AWiSE).

Cambridge AWiSE is a regional voluntary network for women working in science, engineering and technology, whether in an industry or academic setting. It also supports women wishing to return to a career in these areas after a break.

Whilst half a million women in the UK are qualified in at least one of these areas, fewer than a third work in the sector. AWiSE helps to combat this waste of talent by encouraging women to stay in the field by providing networking opportunities, access to mentoring schemes, and a forum for women to discuss relevant issues in a supportive atmosphere.

Cambridge 探花直播 is also actively engaged in this area. It is currently a Gold Sponsor of AWiSE's continuing work and runs its own Women in Science Education and Technology Initiative (WiSETI). WiSETI aims to increase the numbers, retention and promotion rates of women working in these areas as well as raising their profiles and improving their self-confidence.

Lucy Cavendish College has been a pioneer in the field, founded in 1965 for the advancement of women's education. Its purpose is to provide an opportunity for women over 21 of any background to study for an undergraduate or graduate degree at Cambridge. 探花直播event is being held in memory of Dr Anne McLaren DBE, former President of AWiSE and an Honorary Fellow of Lucy Cavendish College.

Dr McLaren was a distinguished and innovative scientist, whose research in reproductive biology played a crucial role in the development of in vitro fertilisation. She was also a strong advocate for women in science.

探花直播symposium also celebrates International Women's Day and National Science Week, and is being sponsored by the Greater Cambridgeshire Partnership and PiR Interims.

探花直播event, entitled Careers in Science: Developing Personal Strengths to Shape Your Career, is free and open to all. It will take place on Tuesday 11 March from 5.45pm at Lucy Cavendish College.
