探花直播former Metropolitan Police Commissioner, Sir Ian Blair, will warn that his dismissal was a threat to independent policing in the UK, in a talk at Cambridge 探花直播 this week.

Sir Ian, who was Britain鈥檚 most senior police officer from 2005 through to 2008, will give a free, public lecture sponsored by the 探花直播鈥檚 Institute of Criminology, on Wednesday (November 11th) at 5pm.

His often controversial tenure as head of the Met came to an abrupt end in October last year, when he was forced out of office by the new Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, over the objections of the Prime Minister.

探花直播circumstances and politics surrounding his departure, and what that may mean for the future of British policing, forms only a part of the subject matter in his new book, Policing Controversy. His talk will also address the policy issues inherent in preventing and responding to suicide bombing, which had been unprecedented in Western Europe at the time he became Police Commissioner.

Sir Ian will suggest that there is a danger that Britain could adopt a US-style system of policing in which local politicians hire and fire the heads of its constabularies on largely political grounds, rather than professional expertise.

Such a system, he argues, would severely impede the 鈥渙perational independence鈥 of the police. In recent interviews, he has similarly argued that current proposals by the Conservatives to introduce directly-elected police commissioners would have 鈥渄angerous implications for the future of policing鈥.

Sir Ian鈥檚 talk has been organised by Professor Lawrence Sherman, the Wolfson Professor of Criminology and Director of the Police Executive Programme at the 探花直播 of Cambridge, who has worked closely with police forces in both the United States and Britain.

鈥淭his talk promises to address the urgent question of the constitutional position of British police,鈥 Professor Sherman said. 鈥淥ne of the leading police officers in the United Kingdom is warning that the police could cease to be governed by a rule of law and instead become a tool of politics.鈥

Sir Ian Blair will be speaking at 5pm on November 11th in Little Hall, on the Sidgwick Site, across from Newnham College on Sidgwick Avenue, Cambridge. 探花直播event is free and open to all but attendance is by booking only.
