探花直播musical profile of Sidney Sussex College has been given a significant boost this academic year with the appointment of Dr David Skinner as the new Director of Music.

He has previously served as Academic Adviser and Music Editor to a number of vocal ensembles including the Hilliard Ensemble and several Cambridge College choirs.

Primarily known for his combined role as a researcher and performer of early music, Dr David Skinner has had an extensive career as a record producer, working on several award winning projects.

As part of his effort to raise the musical profile of Sidney Sussex and encourage the talent of students, this week the college will welcome the world's leading viol consort, Fretwork, for a week-long residency.

During their stay, which will also involve recording and teaching, Fretwork will take part in a festival of evensongs for voices and viols in five of the choral foundations of Cambridge 探花直播.

Since its London debut in 1986, Fretwork has given concerts and broadcast round the world, made numerous highly successful recordings, set new standards in the performance of the great English music for viol consort, and generated a living repertory for the medium.

鈥淚t is a great pleasure to welcome Fretwork for their week long residency at Sidney Sussex College,鈥 said Dr David Skinner.

鈥淚n the past Sidney Sussex has not been primarily known for music, however this year it has been one of our priorities. It has been extremely exciting to see a new tradition of music making in the college and the residency of a world-class group such as Fretwork can only add to the enthusiasm of our musicians.鈥

On Thursday 7 June at 6.15pm they will perform the first of the free choral services alongside the Choir of Trinity College, at Trinity College Chapel, featuring English viol consort works by Gibbons and Byrd.

Then on 8 June at 6.30pm they will visit Gonville and Caius College to perform a series of German works by Buxtehude and Geist, followed by further performances of more English works by Gibbons and Byrd at St John's College on 9 June at 6.30pm and King's College on 10 Jun at 3.30pm.

探花直播festival will culminate in a final evensong on Monday 11 at 6.30pm when Sidney Sussex Choir team up with Fretwork and Alamire, a group of some of the finest consort singers in the UK also directed by David Skinner, for a programme of pieces by Thomas Tomkins, one of the great English composers of the early 17th century.

To mark the finale of their residence, Fretwork will also record a CD with the college choir and Alamire on the early music label Obsidian.
