Materials science will be put in the spotlight tomorrow at the Babbage Lecture Theatre with the annual Armourers and Brasiers’ Cambridge Forum.

̽»¨Ö±²¥highlight of the forum – hosted by the ̽»¨Ö±²¥ of Cambridge’s Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy – will be the 12th Kelly Lecture, given this year by Professor Ke Lu of the Institute of Metal Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Professor Lu, pictured, whose lecture will start at 5.30pm, will talk about nano-twinned materials, which have both ultra-high strength and ductility.

Beforehand, starting at 2pm, there will be five talks on a variety of themes and materials – from sustainable living to how insects stick to walls and ceilings. ̽»¨Ö±²¥speakers and their subjects are:

• Dr Walter Federle, from the ̽»¨Ö±²¥ of Cambridge Zoology Department: ‘How Insects Walk on the Ceiling: Structure and Function of Natural Adhesives’
• Professor Maggie Cusack, from the ̽»¨Ö±²¥ of Glasgow: ‘Biominerals – Columns, Bricks, Trees and Bones’
• Dr James Wilde, of the Carbon Trust: ‘Opportunities Created By a Transition to a Low Carbon Economy’
• Dr Henri Winand, from Intelligent Energy: ‘Black Cabs Go Green: London Taxi Programmes (Hybrid Fuel Cell Taxis for London)
• Professor Helen Atkinson, ̽»¨Ö±²¥ of Leicester: ‘Semi-solid Processing of Metallic Alloys’.

Attendance at the forum is free. However, attendees are asked to register via the Armourers and Brasiers' Cambridge Forum website, the link for which can be found to the right of this page.

̽»¨Ö±²¥Armourers and Brasiers’ Cambridge Forum is held annually at the Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy with the aim of raising the profile of materials science in the UK academic and industrial communities, while being international in scope.

̽»¨Ö±²¥forum attracts high-level involvement from industry, research councils and other influential bodies. It is supported by the Armourers and Brasiers’ Livery Company and ten other sponsors.
