A special conference celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the Institute of Criminology at the ̽»¨Ö±²¥ of Cambridge is taking place today (24 September).

̽»¨Ö±²¥anniversary conference ‘Challenging Crime’, hosted at the Faculty of Law, will welcome friends and associates of the Institute. It will delve into the history and research that is currently being undertaken.

̽»¨Ö±²¥conference will include talks on a variety of topics from leading international academics and respected criminologists.

Vice Chancellor Alison Richard will open the event with Institute Director, Professor Friedrich Lösel and Chair of the Law Faculty Board, Professor David Ibbetson.

Professor Roger Hood, Research Associate at the Centre of Criminology at Oxford ̽»¨Ö±²¥ will give the opening address which will look into the history of the Institute, and reflect on achievements and life of founder, Sir Leon Radinowicz.

Academic staff will speak throughout the conference on three main topics.

̽»¨Ö±²¥first ‘Policing, Imprisonment and Legitimacy’ will include a talk on evidence-based policing around the world from Wolfson Professor Lawrence Sherman, world-renowned for his pioneering experiments in using science to promote justice.

‘Early Prevention and Offender Treatment’ will begin with a talk by Professor David Farrington OBE, a psychologist who focuses on developmental criminology.

Professor Farrington will review the effectiveness of early prevention of delinquency.

̽»¨Ö±²¥final topic ‘Crime and the Community’ will include a talk led by Professor P O Wikström, Professor of Ecological and Developmental Criminology, examining why young people commit crime.

Following this, Dr. Loraine Gelsthorpe will present recent developments regarding women offenders. Dr Gelsthorpe has previously published books on female offenders and feminist perspectives in criminology.

After each of the three main topics, a discussion will take place which will allow audience members to interact with the speakers.

Chief Scientific Advisor to the Home Office, Paul Wiles will close the conference, speaking on the topic of criminology and crime policy.

An Anniversary dinner at Newnham College will follow the conference.

Opened 50 years ago by Sir Leon Radzinowicz, the Institute of Criminology has a worldwide reputation for excellence in research and teaching, and was in fact the first criminological institute in Europe.

̽»¨Ö±²¥Institute is home to the Radzinowicz Library, which houses the most comprehensive criminology collection in the United Kingdom.
