Ian Jack, FBA, Emeritus Professor of English Literature at Cambridge, who died at home in Fen Ditton on 3 September, aged 84, was author of a series of masterly studies and editions of English writers between 1660 and 1860.

Professor Sir Brian Pippard, who died on September 21 aged 88, was Cavendish Professor of Physics at the ̽��ֱ�� of Cambridge from 1971 to 1984 and the first President of Clare Hall, then a newly founded graduate college, from 1966 to 1973.
